Abstract
The influence of the scratching velocity on mechanical and thermal properties of a nanoscopic contact process was studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Simulations with different scratching velocities were conducted in dry and lubricated systems. The contact process consisted of a lateral scratching of a spherical indenter on a planar substrate. All molecular interactions were described by the Lennard-Jones truncated and shifted potential. The forces on the indenter, the coefficient of friction and the work done by the indenter as well as the power applied on the indenter were sampled. Furthermore, an analysis of thermal properties was conducted: The change of the energy of the substrate, the indenter and the fluid was evaluated and the local temperature field was determined. The forces, the coefficient of friction and the work done by the indenter show practically no influence of the scratching velocity. The work done by the indenter was found to be the same for all velocities. As a consequence, the power supplied to the system depends linearly on the scratching velocity, which affects the temperature of the contact zone. As expected, the presence of a lubricant reduces the temperature of the substrate in the vicinity of the contact.

Elementary Elimination of Prenex Cuts in Disjunction-free Intuitionistic Logic

Authors: Matthias Baaz and Christian G. Fermüller

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 41, 24th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2015)

Abstract
The size of shortest cut-free proofs of first-order formulas in intuitionistic sequent calculus is known to be non-elementary in the worst case in terms of the size of given sequent proofs with cuts of the same formulas. In contrast to that fact, we provide an elementary bound for the size of cut-free proofs for disjunction-free intuitionistic logic for the case where the cut-formulas of the original proof are prenex. Moreover, we establish non-elementary lower bounds for classical disjunction-free proofs with prenex cut-formulas and intuitionistic disjunction-free proofs with non-prenex cut-formulas.

A Van Benthem Theorem for Modal Team Semantics

Authors: Juha Kontinen, Julian-Steffen Müller, Henning Schnoor, and Heribert Vollmer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 41, 24th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2015)

Abstract
The famous van Benthem theorem states that modal logic corresponds exactly to the fragment of first-order logic that is invariant under bisimulation. In this article we prove an exact analogue of this theorem in the framework of modal dependence logic (MDL) and team semantics. We show that Modal Team Logic (MTL) extending MDL by classical negation captures exactly the FO-definable bisimulation invariant properties of Kripke structures and teams. We also compare the expressive power of MTL to most of the variants and extensions of MDL recently studied in the area.

Improving Markov-based TCP Traffic Classification

Authors: Gerhard Münz, Stephan Heckmüller, Lothar Braun, and Georg Carle

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 17, 17th GI/ITG Conference on Communication in Distributed Systems (KiVS 2011)

Abstract
This paper presents an improved variant of our Markov-based TCP traffic classifier and demonstrates its performance using traffic captured in a university network. Payload length, flow direction, and position of the first data packets of a TCP connection are reflected in the states of the Markov models. In addition, we integrate a new "end of connection" state to further improve the classification accuracy. Using 10-fold cross validation, we identify appropriate settings for the payload length intervals and the number of data packets considered in the models. Finally, we discuss the classification results for the different applications.

Optimal Approximation of Elliptic Problems by Linear and Nonlinear Mappings

Authors: Erich Novak, Stephan Dahlke, and Winfried Sickel

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 4401, Algorithms and Complexity for Continuous Problems (2005)

Abstract
We study the optimal approximation of the solution of an operator equation Au=f by linear mappings of rank n and compare this with the best n-term approximation with respect to an optimal Riesz basis. We consider worst case errors, where f is an element of the unit ball of a Hilbert space. We apply our results to boundary value problems for elliptic PDEs on an arbitrary bounded Lipschitz domain. Here we prove that approximation by linear mappings is as good as the best n-term approximation with respect to an optimal Riesz basis. Our results are concerned with approximation, not with computation. Our goal is to understand better the possibilities of nonlinear approximation.

Optimal Approximation of Elliptic Problems II: Wavelet Methods

Authors: Stephan Dahlke, Erich Novak, and Winfried Sickel

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 4401, Algorithms and Complexity for Continuous Problems (2005)

Abstract
This talk is concerned with optimal approximations of the solutions of elliptic boundary value problems. After briefly recalling the fundamental concepts of optimality, we shall especially discuss best n-term approximation schemes based on wavelets. We shall mainly be concerned with the Poisson equation in Lipschitz domains. It turns out that wavelet schemes are suboptimal in general, but nevertheless they are superior to the usual uniform approximation methods. Moreover, for specific domains, i.e., for polygonal domains, wavelet methods are in fact optimal. These results are based on regularity estimates of the exact solution in a specific scale of Besov spaces.
