Abstract
We consider the min-max graph balancing problem with strict negative correlation (SNC) constraints. The graph balancing problem arises as an equivalent formulation of the classic unrelated machine scheduling problem, where we are given a hypergraph G = (V,E) with vertex-dependent edge weight function p: E×V ↦ ℤ^{≥0} that represents the processing time of the edges (jobs). The SNC constraints, which are given as edge subsets C_1,C_2,…,C_k, require that the edges in the same subset cannot be assigned to the same vertex at the same time. Under these constraints, the goal is to compute an edge orientation (assignment) that minimizes the maximum workload of the vertices. In this paper, we conduct a general study on the approximability of this problem. First, we show that, in the presence of SNC constraints, the case with max_{e ∈ E} |e| = max_i |C_i| = 2 is the only case for which approximation solutions can be obtained. Further generalization on either direction, e.g., max_{e ∈ E} |e| or max_i |C_i|, will directly make computing a feasible solution an NP-complete problem to solve. Then, we present a 2-approximation algorithm for the case with max_{e ∈ E} |e| = max_i |C_i| = 2, based on a set of structural simplifications and a tailored assignment LP for this problem. We note that our approach is general and can be applied to similar settings, e.g., scheduling with SNC constraints to minimize the weighted completion time, to obtain similar approximation guarantees. Further cases are discussed to describe the landscape of the approximability of this prbolem. For the case with |V| ≤ 2, which is already known to be NP-hard, we present a fully-polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS). On the other hand, we show that the problem is at least as hard as vertex cover to approximate when |V| ≥ 3.

Effective Resistances in Non-Expander Graphs

Authors: Dongrun Cai, Xue Chen, and Pan Peng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 274, 31st Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2023)

Abstract
Effective resistances are ubiquitous in graph algorithms and network analysis. For an undirected graph G, its effective resistance R_G(s,t) between two vertices s and t is defined as the equivalent resistance between s and t if G is thought of as an electrical network with unit resistance on each edge. If we use L_G to denote the Laplacian matrix of G and L_G^† to denote its pseudo-inverse, we have R_G(s,t) = (𝟏_s-𝟏_t)^⊤ L^† (𝟏_s-𝟏_t) such that classical Laplacian solvers [Daniel A. Spielman and Shang{-}Hua Teng, 2014] provide almost-linear time algorithms to approximate R_G(s,t). In this work, we study sublinear time algorithms to approximate the effective resistance of an adjacent pair s and t. We consider the classical adjacency list model [Ron, 2019] for local algorithms. While recent works [Andoni et al., 2018; Peng et al., 2021; Li and Sachdeva, 2023] have provided sublinear time algorithms for expander graphs, we prove several lower bounds for general graphs of n vertices and m edges: 1) It needs Ω(n) queries to obtain 1.01-approximations of the effective resistance of an adjacent pair s and t, even for graphs of degree at most 3 except s and t. 2) For graphs of degree at most d and any parameter 𝓁, it needs Ω(m/𝓁) queries to obtain c ⋅ min{d,𝓁}-approximations where c > 0 is a universal constant. Moreover, we supplement the first lower bound by providing a sublinear time (1+ε)-approximation algorithm for graphs of degree 2 except the pair s and t. One of our technical ingredients is to bound the expansion of a graph in terms of the smallest non-trivial eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix after removing edges. We discover a new lower bound on the eigenvalues of perturbed graphs (resp. perturbed matrices) by incorporating the effective resistance of the removed edge (resp. the leverage scores of the removed rows), which may be of independent interest.

Two-Round Perfectly Secure Message Transmission with Optimal Transmission Rate

Authors: Nicolas Resch and Chen Yuan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 267, 4th Conference on Information-Theoretic Cryptography (ITC 2023)

Abstract
In the model of Perfectly Secure Message Transmission (PSMT), a sender Alice is connected to a receiver Bob via n parallel two-way channels, and Alice holds an 𝓁 symbol secret that she wishes to communicate to Bob. There is an unbounded adversary Eve that controls t of the channels, where n = 2t+1. Eve is able to corrupt any symbol sent through the channels she controls, and furthermore may attempt to infer Alice’s secret by observing the symbols sent through the channels she controls. The transmission is required to be (a) reliable, i.e., Bob must always be able to recover Alice’s secret, regardless of Eve’s corruptions; and (b) private, i.e., Eve may not learn anything about Alice’s secret. We focus on the two-round model, where Bob is permitted to first transmit to Alice, and then Alice responds to Bob. In this work we provide upper and lower bounds for the PSMT model when the length of the communicated secret 𝓁 is asymptotically large. Specifically, we first construct a protocol that allows Alice to communicate an 𝓁 symbol secret to Bob by transmitting at most 2(1+o_{𝓁→∞}(1))n𝓁 symbols. Under a reasonable assumption (which is satisfied by all known efficient two-round PSMT protocols), we complement this with a lower bound showing that 2n𝓁 symbols are necessary for Alice to privately and reliably communicate her secret. This provides strong evidence that our construction is optimal (even up to the leading constant).

Asymmetric Multi-Party Computation

Authors: Vipul Goyal, Chen-Da Liu-Zhang, and Rafail Ostrovsky

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 267, 4th Conference on Information-Theoretic Cryptography (ITC 2023)

Abstract
Current protocols for Multi-Party Computation (MPC) consider the setting where all parties have access to similar resources. For example, all parties have access to channels bounded by the same worst-case delay upper bound Δ, and all channels have the same cost of communication. As a consequence, the overall protocol performance (resp. the communication cost) may be heavily affected by the slowest (resp. the most expensive) channel, even when most channels are fast (resp. cheap). Given the state of affairs, we initiate a systematic study of asymmetric MPC. In asymmetric MPC, the parties are divided into two categories: fast and slow parties, depending on whether they have access to high-end or low-end resources. We investigate two different models. In the first, we consider asymmetric communication delays: Fast parties are connected via channels with small delay δ among themselves, while channels connected to (at least) one slow party have a large delay Δ ≫ δ. In the second model, we consider asymmetric communication costs: Fast parties benefit from channels with cheap communication, while channels connected to a slow party have an expensive communication. We provide a wide range of positive and negative results exploring the trade-offs between the achievable number of tolerated corruptions t and slow parties s, versus the round complexity and communication cost in each of the models. Among others, we achieve the following results. In the model with asymmetric communication delays, focusing on the information-theoretic (i-t) setting: - An i-t asymmetric MPC protocol with security with abort as long as t+s < n and t < n/2, in a constant number of slow rounds. - We show that achieving an i-t asymmetric MPC protocol for t+s = n and with number of slow rounds independent of the circuit size implies an i-t synchronous MPC protocol with round complexity independent of the circuit size, which is a major problem in the field of round-complexity of MPC. - We identify a new primitive, asymmetric broadcast, that allows to consistently distribute a value among the fast parties, and at a later time the same value to slow parties. We completely characterize the feasibility of asymmetric broadcast by showing that it is possible if and only if 2t + s < n. - An i-t asymmetric MPC protocol with guaranteed output delivery as long as t+s < n and t < n/2, in a number of slow rounds independent of the circuit size. In the model with asymmetric communication cost, we achieve an asymmetric MPC protocol for security with abort for t+s < n and t < n/2, based on one-way functions (OWF). The protocol communicates a number of bits over expensive channels that is independent of the circuit size. We conjecture that assuming OWF is needed and further provide a partial result in this direction.

New Approximation Algorithms for Touring Regions

Authors: Benjamin Qi and Richard Qi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 258, 39th International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2023)

Abstract
We analyze the touring regions problem: find a (1+ε)-approximate Euclidean shortest path in d-dimensional space that starts at a given starting point, ends at a given ending point, and visits given regions R₁, R₂, R₃, … , R_n in that order. Our main result is an O (n/√ε log{1/ε} + 1/ε)-time algorithm for touring disjoint disks. We also give an O(min(n/ε, n²/√ε))-time algorithm for touring disjoint two-dimensional convex fat bodies. Both of these results naturally generalize to larger dimensions; we obtain O(n/{ε^{d-1}} log²1/ε + 1/ε^{2d-2}) and O(n/ε^{2d-2})-time algorithms for touring disjoint d-dimensional balls and convex fat bodies, respectively.

Quantum Meets the Minimum Circuit Size Problem

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 215, 13th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2022)

Abstract
In this work, we initiate the study of the Minimum Circuit Size Problem (MCSP) in the quantum setting. MCSP is a problem to compute the circuit complexity of Boolean functions. It is a fascinating problem in complexity theory - its hardness is mysterious, and a better understanding of its hardness can have surprising implications to many fields in computer science. We first define and investigate the basic complexity-theoretic properties of minimum quantum circuit size problems for three natural objects: Boolean functions, unitaries, and quantum states. We show that these problems are not trivially in NP but in QCMA (or have QCMA protocols). Next, we explore the relations between the three quantum MCSPs and their variants. We discover that some reductions that are not known for classical MCSP exist for quantum MCSPs for unitaries and states, e.g., search-to-decision reductions and self-reductions. Finally, we systematically generalize results known for classical MCSP to the quantum setting (including quantum cryptography, quantum learning theory, quantum circuit lower bounds, and quantum fine-grained complexity) and also find new connections to tomography and quantum gravity. Due to the fundamental differences between classical and quantum circuits, most of our results require extra care and reveal properties and phenomena unique to the quantum setting. Our findings could be of interest for future studies, and we post several open problems for further exploration along this direction.

RANDOM
The Product of Gaussian Matrices Is Close to Gaussian

Authors: Yi Li and David P. Woodruff

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 207, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2021)

Abstract
We study the distribution of the matrix product G₁ G₂ ⋯ G_r of r independent Gaussian matrices of various sizes, where G_i is d_{i-1} × d_i, and we denote p = d₀, q = d_r, and require d₁ = d_{r-1}. Here the entries in each G_i are standard normal random variables with mean 0 and variance 1. Such products arise in the study of wireless communication, dynamical systems, and quantum transport, among other places. We show that, provided each d_i, i = 1, …, r, satisfies d_i ≥ C p ⋅ q, where C ≥ C₀ for a constant C₀ > 0 depending on r, then the matrix product G₁ G₂ ⋯ G_r has variation distance at most δ to a p × q matrix G of i.i.d. standard normal random variables with mean 0 and variance ∏_{i = 1}^{r-1} d_i. Here δ → 0 as C → ∞. Moreover, we show a converse for constant r that if d_i < C' max{p,q}^{1/2}min{p,q}^{3/2} for some i, then this total variation distance is at least δ', for an absolute constant δ' > 0 depending on C' and r. This converse is best possible when p = Θ(q).

Geometric Secluded Paths and Planar Satisfiability

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 164, 36th International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2020)

Abstract
We consider paths with low exposure to a 2D polygonal domain, i.e., paths which are seen as little as possible; we differentiate between integral exposure (when we care about how long the path sees every point of the domain) and 0/1 exposure (just counting whether a point is seen by the path or not). For the integral exposure, we give a PTAS for finding the minimum-exposure path between two given points in the domain; for the 0/1 version, we prove that in a simple polygon the shortest path has the minimum exposure, while in domains with holes the problem becomes NP-hard. We also highlight connections of the problem to minimum satisfiability and settle hardness of variants of planar min- and max-SAT.

A 21/16-Approximation for the Minimum 3-Path Partition Problem

Authors: Yong Chen, Randy Goebel, Bing Su, Weitian Tong, Yao Xu, and An Zhang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 149, 30th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2019)

Abstract
The minimum k-path partition (Min-k-PP for short) problem targets to partition an input graph into the smallest number of paths, each of which has order at most k. We focus on the special case when k=3. Existing literature mainly concentrates on the exact algorithms for special graphs, such as trees. Because of the challenge of NP-hardness on general graphs, the approximability of the Min-3-PP problem attracts researchers' attention. The first approximation algorithm dates back about 10 years and achieves an approximation ratio of 3/2, which was recently improved to 13/9 and further to 4/3. We investigate the 3/2-approximation algorithm for the Min-3-PP problem and discover several interesting structural properties. Instead of studying the unweighted Min-3-PP problem directly, we design a novel weight schema for l-paths, l in {1, 2, 3}, and investigate the weighted version. A greedy local search algorithm is proposed to generate a heavy path partition. We show the achieved path partition has the least 1-paths, which is also the key ingredient for the algorithms with ratios 13/9 and 4/3. When switching back to the unweighted objective function, we prove the approximation ratio 21/16 via amortized analysis.

Abstract
We study a natural problem in graph sparsification, the Spanning Tree Congestion (STC) problem. Informally, it seeks a spanning tree with no tree-edge routing too many of the original edges. For any general connected graph with n vertices and m edges, we show that its STC is at most O(sqrt{mn}), which is asymptotically optimal since we also demonstrate graphs with STC at least Omega(sqrt{mn}). We present a polynomial-time algorithm which computes a spanning tree with congestion O(sqrt{mn}* log n). We also present another algorithm for computing a spanning tree with congestion O(sqrt{mn}); this algorithm runs in sub-exponential time when m = omega(n log^2 n). For achieving the above results, an important intermediate theorem is generalized Györi-Lovász theorem. Chen et al. [Jiangzhuo Chen et al., 2007] gave a non-constructive proof. We give the first elementary and constructive proof with a local search algorithm of running time O^*(4^n). We discuss some consequences of the theorem concerning graph partitioning, which might be of independent interest. We also show that for any graph which satisfies certain expanding properties, its STC is at most O(n), and a corresponding spanning tree can be computed in polynomial time. We then use this to show that a random graph has STC Theta(n) with high probability.

How Hard Is It to Satisfy (Almost) All Roommates?

Authors: Jiehua Chen, Danny Hermelin, Manuel Sorge, and Harel Yedidsion

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 107, 45th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2018)

Abstract
The classic Stable Roommates problem (the non-bipartite generalization of the well-known Stable Marriage problem) asks whether there is a stable matching for a given set of agents, i.e. a partitioning of the agents into disjoint pairs such that no two agents induce a blocking pair. Herein, each agent has a preference list denoting who it prefers to have as a partner, and two agents are blocking if they prefer to be with each other rather than with their assigned partners. Since stable matchings may not be unique, we study an NP-hard optimization variant of Stable Roommates, called Egal Stable Roommates, which seeks to find a stable matching with a minimum egalitarian cost gamma, i.e. the sum of the dissatisfaction of the agents is minimum. The dissatisfaction of an agent is the number of agents that this agent prefers over its partner if it is matched; otherwise it is the length of its preference list. We also study almost stable matchings, called Min-Block-Pair Stable Roommates, which seeks to find a matching with a minimum number beta of blocking pairs. Our main result is that Egal Stable Roommates parameterized by gamma is fixed-parameter tractable, while Min-Block-Pair Stable Roommates parameterized by beta is W[1]-hard, even if the length of each preference list is at most five.

Abstract
Depth first search (DFS) tree is one of the most well-known data structures for designing efficient graph algorithms. Given an undirected graph G=(V,E) with n vertices and m edges, the textbook algorithm takes O(n+m) time to construct a DFS tree. In this paper, we study the problem of maintaining a DFS tree when the graph is undergoing incremental updates. Formally, we show: Given an arbitrary online sequence of edge or vertex insertions, there is an algorithm that reports a DFS tree in O(n) worst case time per operation, and requires O (min {m log n, n^2}) preprocessing time. Our result improves the previous O(n log^3 n) worst case update time algorithm by Baswana et al. [Baswana et al., 2016] and the O(n log n) time by Nakamura and Sadakane [Nakamura and Sadakane, 2017], and matches the trivial Omega(n) lower bound when it is required to explicitly output a DFS tree. Our result builds on the framework introduced in the breakthrough work by Baswana et al. [Baswana et al., 2016], together with a novel use of a tree-partition lemma by Duan and Zhang [Duan and Zhang, 2016], and the celebrated fractional cascading technique by Chazelle and Guibas [Chazelle and Guibas, 1986a; Chazelle and Guibas, 1986b].

Nearly Optimal Separation Between Partially and Fully Retroactive Data Structures

Abstract
Since the introduction of retroactive data structures at SODA 2004, a major unsolved problem has been to bound the gap between the best partially retroactive data structure (where changes can be made to the past, but only the present can be queried) and the best fully retroactive data structure (where the past can also be queried) for any problem. It was proved in 2004 that any partially retroactive data structure with operation time T_{op}(n,m) can be transformed into a fully retroactive data structure with operation time O(sqrt{m} * T_{op}(n,m)), where n is the size of the data structure and m is the number of operations in the timeline [Demaine et al., 2004]. But it has been open for 14 years whether such a gap is necessary. In this paper, we prove nearly matching upper and lower bounds on this gap for all n and m. We improve the upper bound for n << sqrt m by showing a new transformation with multiplicative overhead n log m. We then prove a lower bound of min {n log m, sqrt m}^{1-o(1)} assuming any of the following conjectures: - Conjecture I: Circuit SAT requires 2^{n - o(n)} time on n-input circuits of size 2^{o(n)}. This conjecture is far weaker than the well-believed SETH conjecture from complexity theory, which asserts that CNF SAT with n variables and O(n) clauses already requires 2^{n-o(n)} time. - Conjecture II: Online (min,+) product between an integer n x n matrix and n vectors requires n^{3 - o(1)} time. This conjecture is weaker than the APSP conjectures widely used in fine-grained complexity. - Conjecture III (3-SUM Conjecture): Given three sets A,B,C of integers, each of size n, deciding whether there exist a in A, b in B, c in C such that a + b + c = 0 requires n^{2 - o(1)} time. This 1995 conjecture [Anka Gajentaan and Mark H. Overmars, 1995] was the first conjecture in fine-grained complexity. Our lower bound construction illustrates an interesting power of fully retroactive queries: they can be used to quickly solve batched pair evaluation. We believe this technique can prove useful for other data structure lower bounds, especially dynamic ones.

An Efficient Fixed-Parameter Algorithm for the 2-Plex Bipartition Problem

Authors: Li-Hsuan Chen, Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Ling-Ju Hung, and Peter Rossmanith

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 92, 28th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2017)

Abstract
Given a graph G=(V, E), an s-plex S\subseteq V is a vertex subset such that for v\in S the degree of v in G[S] is at least |S|-s. An s-plex bipartition \mathcal{P}=(V_1, V_2) is a bipartition of G=(V, E), V=V_1\uplus V_2, satisfying that both V_1 and V_2 are s-plexes. Given an instance G=(V, E) and a parameter k, the s-Plex Bipartition problem asks whether there exists an s-plex bipartition of G such that min{|V_1|, |V_2|\}\leq k. The s-Plex Bipartition problem is NP-complete. However, it is still open whether this problem is fixed-parameter tractable. In this paper, we give a fixed-parameter algorithm for 2-Plex Bipartition running in time O*(2.4143^k). A graph G = (V, E) is called defective (p, d)-colorable if it admits a vertex coloring with p colors such that each color class in G induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most d. A graph G admits an s-plex bipartition if and only if the complement graph of G, \bar{G}, admits a defective (2, s-1)-coloring such that one of the two color classes is of size at most k. By applying our fixed-parameter algorithm as a subroutine, one can find a defective (2,1)-coloring with one of the two colors of minimum cardinality for a given graph in O*(1.5539^n) time where n is the number of vertices in the input graph.

Stochastic and Robust Scheduling in the Cloud

Authors: Lin Chen, Nicole Megow, Roman Rischke, and Leen Stougie

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 40, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2015)

Abstract
Users of cloud computing services are offered rapid access to computing resources via the Internet. Cloud providers use different pricing options such as (i) time slot reservation in advance at a fixed price and (ii) on-demand service at a (hourly) pay-as-used basis. Choosing the best combination of pricing options is a challenging task for users, in particular, when the instantiation of computing jobs underlies uncertainty. We propose a natural model for two-stage scheduling under uncertainty that captures such resource provisioning and scheduling problem in the cloud. Reserving a time unit for processing jobs incurs some cost, which depends on when the reservation is made: a priori decisions, based only on distributional information, are much cheaper than on-demand decisions when the actual scenario is known. We consider both stochastic and robust versions of scheduling unrelated machines with objectives of minimizing the sum of weighted completion times and the makespan. Our main contribution is an (8+eps)-approximation algorithm for the min-sum objective for the stochastic polynomial-scenario model. The same technique gives a (7.11+eps)-approximation for minimizing the makespan. The key ingredient is an LP-based separation of jobs and time slots to be considered in either the first or the second stage only, and then approximately solving the separated problems. At the expense of another epsilon our results hold for any arbitrary scenario distribution given by means of a black-box. Our techniques also yield approximation algorithms for robust two-stage scheduling.
