Sheaf Semantics of Termination-Insensitive Noninterference

Authors: Jonathan Sterling and Robert Harper

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 228, 7th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2022)

Abstract
We propose a new sheaf semantics for secure information flow over a space of abstract behaviors, based on synthetic domain theory: security classes are open/closed partitions, types are sheaves, and redaction of sensitive information corresponds to restricting a sheaf to a closed subspace. Our security-aware computational model satisfies termination-insensitive noninterference automatically, and therefore constitutes an intrinsic alternative to state of the art extrinsic/relational models of noninterference. Our semantics is the latest application of Sterling and Harper’s recent re-interpretation of phase distinctions and noninterference in programming languages in terms of Artin gluing and topos-theoretic open/closed modalities. Prior applications include parametricity for ML modules, the proof of normalization for cubical type theory by Sterling and Angiuli, and the cost-aware logical framework of Niu et al. In this paper we employ the phase distinction perspective twice: first to reconstruct the syntax and semantics of secure information flow as a lattice of phase distinctions between "higher" and "lower" security, and second to verify the computational adequacy of our sheaf semantics with respect to a version of Abadi et al.’s dependency core calculus to which we have added a construct for declassifying termination channels.

A Combinatorial Approach to Higher-Order Structure for Polynomial Functors

Authors: Marcelo Fiore, Zeinab Galal, and Hugo Paquet

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 228, 7th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2022)

Abstract
Polynomial functors are categorical structures used in a variety of applications across theoretical computer science; for instance, in database theory, denotational semantics, functional programming, and type theory. A well-known problem is that the bicategory of finitary polynomial functors between categories of indexed sets is not cartesian closed, despite its success and influence on denotational models and linear logic. This paper introduces a formal bridge between the model of finitary polynomial functors and the combinatorial theory of generalised species of structures. Our approach consists in viewing finitary polynomial functors as free analytic functors, which correspond to free generalised species. In order to systematically consider finitary polynomial functors from this combinatorial perspective, we study a model of groupoids with additional logical structure; this is used to constrain the generalised species between them. The result is a new cartesian closed bicategory that embeds finitary polynomial functors.

A Profunctorial Scott Semantics

Authors: Zeinab Galal

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 167, 5th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2020)

Abstract
In this paper, we study the bicategory of profunctors with the free finite coproduct pseudo-comonad and show that it constitutes a model of linear logic that generalizes the Scott model. We formalize the connection between the two models as a change of base for enriched categories which induces a pseudo-functor that preserves all the linear logic structure. We prove that morphisms in the co-Kleisli bicategory correspond to the concept of strongly finitary functors (sifted colimits preserving functors) between presheaf categories. We further show that this model provides solutions of recursive type equations which provides 2-dimensional models of the pure lambda calculus and we also exhibit a fixed point operator on terms.

Cubical Syntax for Reflection-Free Extensional Equality

Authors: Jonathan Sterling, Carlo Angiuli, and Daniel Gratzer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 131, 4th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2019)

Abstract
We contribute XTT, a cubical reconstruction of Observational Type Theory [Altenkirch et al., 2007] which extends Martin-Löf’s intensional type theory with a dependent equality type that enjoys function extensionality and a judgmental version of the unicity of identity proofs principle (UIP): any two elements of the same equality type are judgmentally equal. Moreover, we conjecture that the typing relation can be decided in a practical way. In this paper, we establish an algebraic canonicity theorem using a novel extension of the logical families or categorical gluing argument inspired by Coquand and Shulman [Coquand, 2018; Shulman, 2015]: every closed element of boolean type is derivably equal to either true or false.

List Objects with Algebraic Structure

Authors: Marcelo Fiore and Philip Saville

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 84, 2nd International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2017)

Abstract
We introduce and study the notion of list object with algebraic structure. The first key aspect of our development is that the notion of list object is considered in the context of monoidal structure; the second key aspect is that we further equip list objects with algebraic structure in this setting. Within our framework, we observe that list objects give rise to free monoids and moreover show that this remains so in the presence of algebraic structure. In addition, we provide a basic theory explicitly describing as an inductively defined object such free monoids with suitably compatible algebraic structure in common practical situations. This theory is accompanied by the study of two technical themes that, besides being of interest in their own right, are important for establishing applications. These themes are: parametrised initiality, central to the universal property defining list objects; and approaches to algebraic structure, in particular in the context of monoidal theories. The latter leads naturally to a notion of nsr (or near semiring) category of independent interest. With the theoretical development in place, we touch upon a variety of applications, considering Natural Numbers Objects in domain theory, giving a universal property for the monadic list transformer, providing free instances of algebraic extensions of the Haskell Monad type class, elucidating the algebraic character of the construction of opetopes in higher-dimensional algebra, and considering free models of second-order algebraic theories.
