Mobile Data Visualization (Dagstuhl Seminar 19292)

Authors: Eun Kyoung Choe, Raimund Dachselt, Petra Isenberg, and Bongshin Lee

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 9, Issue 7 (2020)

Abstract
Mobile visualization is becoming more prevalent, and new mobile device form factors and hardware capabilities will continually emerge in the coming years. Therefore, it is timely to reflect on what has been discovered to date and to look into the future. This Dagstuhl seminar brought together both established and junior researchers, designers, and practitioners from relevant application and research fields, including visualization, ubiquitous computing, human-computer interaction, and health informatics. Five demos and five tutorials gave participants an opportunity to share their experiences and research, and learn skills relevant to mobile data visualization. Through brainstorming and discussion in break-out sessions, along with short report back presentations, participants identified challenges and opportunities for future research on mobile data visualization.

Data Physicalization (Dagstuhl Seminar 18441)

Authors: Jason Alexander, Petra Isenberg, Yvonne Jansen, Bernice E. Rogowitz, and Andrew Vande Moere

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 8, Issue 10 (2019)

Abstract
Data physicalization involves representing numbers and relationships using physical, tangible displays. These displays provide tactile, as well as visual metaphors for expressing and experiencing data, and can unlock new analytical insights and emotional responses. This Dagstuhl seminar brought together a diverse group of researchers and practitioners to explore the benefits and challenges of physicalization - computer scientists trained in visualization, virtual reality and human-computer interaction; architects of virtual and augmented systems; perceptual and cognitive scientists; and artists and designers. Through interactive discussions and demonstrations, we explored physicalization, as a set of methodologies for representing data, for engaging audiences, and for artistic expression.

Interaction with Information for Visual Reasoning (Dagstuhl Seminar 13352)

Authors: David S. Ebert, Brian D. Fisher, and Petra Isenberg

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 3, Issue 8 (2013)

Abstract
From August 26--August 30, 2013 Seminar 13352 was held at Dagstuhl on the topic of "Interaction with Information for Visual Reasoning." The seminar brought together a group of cognitive scientists, psychologists, and computer scientists in the area of scientific visualization, information visualization, and visual analytics who were carefully selected for their theoretical and methodological capabilities and history of interdisciplinary collaboration. During the workshop seven discussion groups were formed during which the role of interaction for visualization was carefully reflected on. We discussed in particular the value, structure, and different types of interaction but also how to evaluate visualization and the idea of 'narrative' as applied to visual analytics. This report documents the program and short summaries of the discussion groups for the seminar.
