A Systematic Review of Teacher-Facing Dashboards for Collaborative Learning Activities and Tools in Online Higher Education

Abstract
Dashboard for online higher education support monitoring and evaluation of students’ interactions, but mostly limited to interaction occurring within learning management systems. In this study, we sought to find which collaborative learning activities and tools in online higher education are included in teaching dashboards. By following Kitchenham’s procedure for systematic reviews, 36 papers were identified according to this focus and analysed. The results identify dashboards supporting collaborative tools, both synchronous and asynchronous, along categories such as learning management systems, communication tools, social media, computer programming code management platforms, project management platforms, and collaborative writing tools. Dashboard support was also found for collaborative activities, grouped under four categories of forum discussion activities, three categories of communication activities and four categories of collaborative editing/sharing activities, though most of the analysed dashboards only provide support for no more than two or three collaborative tools. This represents a need for further research on how to develop dashboards that combine data from a more diverse set of collaborative activities and tools.

Collaborative Wayfinding Under Distributed Spatial Knowledge (Short Paper)

Abstract
In many everyday situations, two or more people navigate collaboratively but their spatial knowledge does not necessarily overlap. However, most research to date, has investigated social wayfinding under either 1-sided or fully shared spatial information. Here, we present the pilot experiment of a novel, computerised, non-verbal experimental paradigm to study collaborative wayfinding under the face of spatial information uncertainty. Participants (N=32) learned two different neighbourhoods individually, and then navigated together as dyads (D=16), from one neighbourhood to the other. Our pilot results reveal that overall participants share navigational control, but are in control more when the task leads them to a familiar destination. We discuss the effects of spatial ability and motivation to lead, as well as the outlook of the paradigm.

Game Elements, Motivation and Programming Learning: A Case Study

Abstract
The learning of programming is traditionally challenging for students. However, this is also one of the most fundamental skills for any computer scientist, and is becoming an important skill in other areas of knowledge. In this paper we analyze the use of game-elements in a challenging long-term programming task, with students of the 3rd year of a Informatics Engineering degree. We conducted a quantitative study using the AMS scale to assess students' motivation. Results show that with the use of game-elements, students are both intrinsically and extrinsically motivated, and that they consider learning/working fun, which contributes positively to their academic performance.

Detailing an e-Learning Course on Software Engineering and Architecture Using BPMN

Abstract
We have employed BPMN diagrams to expose the foreseen teaching and learning activities of participants in an e-learning course under planning. This provided clarification of the teaching and learning actions, revealing to the educational planning team aspects which were not explicit in the lecturer’s plan, such as: the level of effort for the teacher as well as for the student; specific moments when there is a need to provide feedback and motivation. We believe that this exercise constitutes a rich and helpful contribution in planning and visualization efficient for other teaching teams of computer programming courses.

Online Bin Covering with Limited Migration

Abstract
Semi-online models where decisions may be revoked in a limited way have been studied extensively in the last years. This is motivated by the fact that the pure online model is often too restrictive to model real-world applications, where some changes might be allowed. A well-studied measure of the amount of decisions that can be revoked is the migration factor beta: When an object o of size s(o) arrives, the decisions for objects of total size at most beta * s(o) may be revoked. Usually beta should be a constant. This means that a small object only leads to small changes. This measure has been successfully investigated for different, classical problems such as bin packing or makespan minimization. The dual of makespan minimization - the Santa Claus or machine covering problem - has also been studied, whereas the dual of bin packing - the bin covering problem - has not been looked at from such a perspective. In this work, we extensively study the bin covering problem with migration in different scenarios. We develop algorithms both for the static case - where only insertions are allowed - and for the dynamic case, where items may also depart. We also develop lower bounds for these scenarios both for amortized migration and for worst-case migration showing that our algorithms have nearly optimal migration factor and asymptotic competitive ratio (up to an arbitrary small epsilon). We therefore resolve the competitiveness of the bin covering problem with migration.

Bounded Degree Conjecture Holds Precisely for c-Crossing-Critical Graphs with c <= 12

Abstract
We study c-crossing-critical graphs, which are the minimal graphs that require at least c edge-crossings when drawn in the plane. For every fixed pair of integers with c >= 13 and d >= 1, we give first explicit constructions of c-crossing-critical graphs containing a vertex of degree greater than d. We also show that such unbounded degree constructions do not exist for c <=12, precisely, that there exists a constant D such that every c-crossing-critical graph with c <=12 has maximum degree at most D. Hence, the bounded maximum degree conjecture of c-crossing-critical graphs, which was generally disproved in 2010 by Dvořák and Mohar (without an explicit construction), holds true, surprisingly, exactly for the values c <=12.

Cluster Editing in Multi-Layer and Temporal Graphs

Abstract
Motivated by the recent rapid growth of research for algorithms to cluster multi-layer and temporal graphs, we study extensions of the classical Cluster Editing problem. In Multi-Layer Cluster Editing we receive a set of graphs on the same vertex set, called layers and aim to transform all layers into cluster graphs (disjoint unions of cliques) that differ only slightly. More specifically, we want to mark at most d vertices and to transform each layer into a cluster graph using at most k edge additions or deletions per layer so that, if we remove the marked vertices, we obtain the same cluster graph in all layers. In Temporal Cluster Editing we receive a sequence of layers and we want to transform each layer into a cluster graph so that consecutive layers differ only slightly. That is, we want to transform each layer into a cluster graph with at most k edge additions or deletions and to mark a distinct set of d vertices in each layer so that each two consecutive layers are the same after removing the vertices marked in the first of the two layers. We study the combinatorial structure of the two problems via their parameterized complexity with respect to the parameters d and k, among others. Despite the similar definition, the two problems behave quite differently: In particular, Multi-Layer Cluster Editing is fixed-parameter tractable with running time k^{O(k + d)} s^{O(1)} for inputs of size s, whereas Temporal Cluster Editing is W[1]-hard with respect to k even if d = 3.

First-Order Interpretations of Bounded Expansion Classes

Abstract
The notion of bounded expansion captures uniform sparsity of graph classes and renders various algorithmic problems that are hard in general tractable. In particular, the model-checking problem for first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable over such graph classes. With the aim of generalizing such results to dense graphs, we introduce classes of graphs with structurally bounded expansion, defined as first-order interpretations of classes of bounded expansion. As a first step towards their algorithmic treatment, we provide their characterization analogous to the characterization of classes of bounded expansion via low treedepth decompositions, replacing treedepth by its dense analogue called shrubdepth.

On The I/O Complexity of Dynamic Distinct Counting

Abstract
In dynamic distinct counting, we want to maintain a multi-set S of integers under insertions to answer efficiently the query: how many distinct elements are there in S? In external memory, the problem admits two standard solutions. The first one maintains $S$ in a hash structure, so that the distinct count can be incrementally updated after each insertion using O(1) expected I/Os. A query is answered for free. The second one stores S in a linked list, and thus supports an insertion in O(1/B) amortized I/Os. A query can be answered in O(N/B log_{M/B} (N/B)) I/Os by sorting, where N=|S|, B is the block size, and M is the memory size. In this paper, we show that the above two naive solutions are already optimal within a polylog factor. Specifically, for any Las Vegas structure using N^{O(1)} blocks, if its expected amortized insertion cost is o(1/log B}), then it must incur Omega(N/(B log B)) expected I/Os answering a query in the worst case, under the (realistic) condition that N is a polynomial of B. This means that the problem is repugnant to update buffering: the query cost jumps from 0 dramatically to almost linearity as soon as the insertion cost drops slightly below Omega(1).
