Abstract
Real-time systems require a formal guarantee of timing-constraints, not only for individual tasks but also for data-propagation. The timing behavior of data-propagation paths in a given system is typically described by its maximum reaction time and its maximum data age. This paper shows that they are equivalent. To reach this conclusion, partitioned job chains are introduced, which consist of one immediate forward and one immediate backward job chain. Such partitioned job chains are proven to describe maximum reaction time and maximum data age in a universal manner. This universal description does not only show the equivalence of maximum reaction time and maximum data age, but can also be exploited to speed up the computation of such significantly. In particular, the speed-up for synthesized task sets based on automotive benchmarks can be up to 1600. Since only very few non-restrictive assumptions are made, the equivalence of maximum data age and maximum reaction time holds for almost any scheduling mechanism and even for tasks which do not adhere to the typical periodic or sporadic task model. This observation is supported by a simulation of a ROS2 navigation system.

Exploring Material Design Space with a Deep-Learning Guided Genetic Algorithm

Authors: Kuan-Lin Chen and Rebecca Schulman

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 238, 28th International Conference on DNA Computing and Molecular Programming (DNA 28) (2022)

Abstract
Designing complex, dynamic yet multi-functional materials and devices is challenging because the design spaces for these materials have numerous interdependent and often conflicting constraints. Taking inspiration from advances in artificial intelligence and their applications in material discovery, we propose a computational method for designing metamorphic DNA-co-polymerized hydrogel structures. The method consists of a coarse-grained simulation and a deep learning-guided optimization system for exploring the immense design space of these structures. Here, we develop a simple numeric simulation of DNA-co-polymerized hydrogel shape change and seek to find designs for structured hydrogels that can fold into the shapes of different Arabic numerals in different actuation states. We train a convolutional neural network to classify and score the geometric outputs of the coarse-grained simulation to provide autonomous feedback for design optimization. We then construct a genetic algorithm that generates and selects large batches of material designs that compete with one another to evolve and converge on optimal objective-matching designs. We show that we are able to explore the large design space and learn important parameters and traits. We identify vital relationships between the material scale size and the range of shape change that can be achieved by individual domains and we elucidate trade-offs between different design parameters. Finally, we discover material designs capable of transforming into multiple different digits in different actuation states.

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 103, 20th International Workshop on Worst-Case Execution Time Analysis (WCET 2022)

Abstract
We present llvmta, an academic WCET analysis tool based on the LLVM compiler infrastructure. It aims to enable the evaluation of novel WCET analysis approaches in a state-of-the-art analysis framework without dealing with the complexity of modeling real-world hardware architectures. We discuss the main design decisions and interfaces that allow to implement new analysis approaches. Finally, we highlight various existing research projects whose evaluation has been enabled by llvmta.

Unikernel-Based Real-Time Virtualization Under Deferrable Servers: Analysis and Realization

Abstract
For cyber-physical systems, real-time virtualization optimizes the hardware utilization by consolidating multiple systems into the same platform, while satisfying the timing constraints of their real-time tasks. This paper considers virtualization based on unikernels, i.e., single address space kernels usually constructed by using library operating systems. Each unikernel is a guest operating system in the virtualization and hosts a single real-time task. We consider deferrable servers in the virtualization platform to schedule the unikernel-based guest operating systems and analyze the worst-case response time of a sporadic real-time task under such a virtualization architecture. Throughout synthesized tasksets, we empirically show that our analysis outperforms the restated analysis derived from the state-of-the-art, which is based on Real-Time Calculus. Furthermore, we provide insights on implementation-specific issues and offer evidence that the proposed scheduling architecture can be effectively implemented on top of the Xen hypervisor while incurring acceptable overhead.

Improved Decoding of Expander Codes

Authors: Xue Chen, Kuan Cheng, Xin Li, and Minghui Ouyang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 215, 13th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2022)

Abstract
We study the classical expander codes, introduced by Sipser and Spielman [M. Sipser and D. A. Spielman, 1996]. Given any constants 0 < α, ε < 1/2, and an arbitrary bipartite graph with N vertices on the left, M < N vertices on the right, and left degree D such that any left subset S of size at most α N has at least (1-ε)|S|D neighbors, we show that the corresponding linear code given by parity checks on the right has distance at least roughly {α N}/{2 ε}. This is strictly better than the best known previous result of 2(1-ε) α N [Madhu Sudan, 2000; Viderman, 2013] whenever ε < 1/2, and improves the previous result significantly when ε is small. Furthermore, we show that this distance is tight in general, thus providing a complete characterization of the distance of general expander codes. Next, we provide several efficient decoding algorithms, which vastly improve previous results in terms of the fraction of errors corrected, whenever ε < 1/4. Finally, we also give a bound on the list-decoding radius of general expander codes, which beats the classical Johnson bound in certain situations (e.g., when the graph is almost regular and the code has a high rate). Our techniques exploit novel combinatorial properties of bipartite expander graphs. In particular, we establish a new size-expansion tradeoff, which may be of independent interests.

Tight Competitive Analyses of Online Car-Sharing Problems

Authors: Ya-Chun Liang, Kuan-Yun Lai, Ho-Lin Chen, and Kazuo Iwama

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 212, 32nd International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2021)

Abstract
The car-sharing problem, proposed by Luo, Erlebach and Xu in 2018, mainly focuses on an online model in which there are two locations: 0 and 1, and k total cars. Each request which specifies its pick-up time and pick-up location (among 0 and 1, and the other is the drop-off location) is released in each stage a fixed amount of time before its specified start (i.e. pick-up) time. The time between the booking (i.e. released) time and the start time is enough to move empty cars between 0 and 1 for relocation if they are not used in that stage. The model, called kS2L-F, assumes that requests in each stage arrive sequentially regardless of the same booking time and the decision (accept or reject) must be made immediately. The goal is to accept as many requests as possible. In spite of only two locations, the analysis does not seem easy and the (tight) competitive ratio (CR) is only known to be 2.0 for k = 2 and 1.5 for a restricted value of k, i.e., a multiple of three. In this paper, we remove all the holes of unknown CR’s; namely we prove that the CR is 2k/(k + ⌊k/3⌋) for all k ≥ 2. Furthermore, if the algorithm can delay its decision until all requests have come in each stage, the CR is improved to roughly 4/3. We can take this advantage even further, precisely we can achieve a CR of (2+R)/3 if the number of requests in each stage is at most Rk, 1 ≤ R ≤ 2, where we do not have to know the value of R in advance. Finally we demonstrate that randomization also helps to get (slightly) better CR’s.

Offloading Safety- and Mission-Critical Tasks via Unreliable Connections

Abstract
For many cyber-physical systems, e.g., IoT systems and autonomous vehicles, offloading workload to auxiliary processing units has become crucial. However, since this approach highly depends on network connectivity and responsiveness, typically only non-critical tasks are offloaded, which have less strict timing requirements than critical tasks. In this work, we provide two protocols allowing to offload critical and non-critical tasks likewise, while providing different service levels for non-critical tasks in the event of an unsuccessful offloading operation, depending on the respective system requirements. We analyze the worst-case timing behavior of the local cyber-physical system and, based on these analyses, we provide a sufficient schedulability test for each of the proposed protocols. In the course of comprehensive experiments, we show that our protocols have reasonable acceptance ratios under the provided schedulability tests. Moreover, we demonstrate that the system behavior under our proposed protocols is strongly dependent on probability of unsuccessful offloading operations, the percentage of critical tasks in the system, and the amount of offloaded workload.

Efficiently Approximating the Probability of Deadline Misses in Real-Time Systems

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 106, 30th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS 2018)

Abstract
This paper explores the probability of deadline misses for a set of constrained-deadline sporadic soft real-time tasks on uniprocessor platforms. We explore two directions to evaluate the probability whether a job of the task under analysis can finish its execution at (or before) a testing time point t. One approach is based on analytical upper bounds that can be efficiently computed in polynomial time at the price of precision loss for each testing point, derived from the well-known Hoeffding's inequality and the well-known Bernstein's inequality. Another approach convolutes the probability efficiently over multinomial distributions, exploiting a series of state space reduction techniques, i.e., pruning without any loss of precision, and approximations via unifying equivalent classes with a bounded loss of precision. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approaches in a series of evaluations. Distinct from the convolution-based methods in the literature, which suffer from the high computation demand and are applicable only to task sets with a few tasks, our approaches can scale reasonably without losing much precision in terms of the derived probability of deadline misses.

An Improved Tax Scheme for Selfish Routing

Authors: Te-Li Wang, Chih-Kuan Yeh, and Ho-Lin Chen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 64, 27th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2016)

Abstract
We study the problem of routing traffic for independent selfish users in a congested network to minimize the total latency. The inefficiency of selfish routing motivates regulating the flow of the system to lower the total latency of the Nash Equilibrium by economic incentives or penalties. When applying tax to the routes, we follow the definition of [Christodoulou et al, Algorithmica, 2014] to define ePoA as the Nash total cost including tax in the taxed network over the optimal cost in the original network. We propose a simple tax scheme consisting of step functions imposed on the links. The tax scheme can be applied to routing games with parallel links, affine cost functions and single-commodity networks to lower the ePoA to at most 4/3 - epsilon, where epsilon only depends on the discrepancy between the links. We show that there exists a tax scheme in the two link case with an ePoA upperbound less than 1.192 which is almost tight. Moreover, we design another tax scheme that lowers ePoA down to 1.281 for routing games with groups of links such that links in the same group are similar to each other and groups are sufficiently different.
