Modular Choreographies: Bridging Alice and Bob Notation to Java

Abstract
We present Modular Choreographies, a new choreographic programming language that features modular functions. Modular Choreographies is aimed at simplicity: its communication abstraction follows the simple tradition from the "Alice and Bob" notation. We develop a compiler toolchain that translates choreographies into modular Java libraries, which developers can use to participate correctly in choreographies. The key novelty is to compile through the Choral language, which was previously proposed to define object-oriented choreographies: our toolchain compiles Modular Choreographies to Choral, and then leverages the existing Choral compiler to generate Java code. Our work is the first to bridge the simplicity of traditional choreographic programming languages with the requirement of generating modular libraries in a mainstream language (Java).

Now It Compiles! Certified Automatic Repair of Uncompilable Protocols

Abstract
Choreographic programming is a paradigm where developers write the global specification (called choreography) of a communicating system, and then a correct-by-construction distributed implementation is compiled automatically. Unfortunately, it is possible to write choreographies that cannot be compiled, because of issues related to an agreement property known as knowledge of choice. This forces programmers to reason manually about implementation details that may be orthogonal to the protocol that they are writing. Amendment is an automatic procedure for repairing uncompilable choreographies. We present a formalisation of amendment from the literature, built upon an existing formalisation of choreographic programming. However, in the process of formalising the expected properties of this procedure, we discovered a subtle counterexample that invalidates the original published and peer-reviewed pen-and-paper theory. We discuss how using a theorem prover led us to both finding the issue, and stating and proving a correct formulation of the properties of amendment.

Modular Compilation for Higher-Order Functional Choreographies

Abstract
Choreographic programming is a paradigm for concurrent and distributed software, whereby descriptions of the intended communications (choreographies) are automatically compiled into distributed code with strong safety and liveness properties (e.g., deadlock-freedom). Recent efforts tried to combine the theories of choreographic programming and higher-order functional programming, in order to integrate the benefits of the former with the modularity of the latter. However, they do not offer a satisfactory theory of compilation compared to the literature, because of important syntactic and semantic shortcomings: compilation is not modular (editing a part might require recompiling everything) and the generated code can perform unexpected global synchronisations. In this paper, we find that these shortcomings are not mere coincidences. Rather, they stem from genuine new challenges posed by the integration of choreographies and functions: knowing which participants are involved in a choreography becomes nontrivial, and divergence in applications requires rethinking how to prove the semantic correctness of compilation. We present a novel theory of compilation for functional choreographies that overcomes these challenges, based on types and a careful design of the semantics of choreographies and distributed code. The result: a modular notion of compilation, which produces code that is deadlock-free and correct (it operationally corresponds to its source choreography).

Reasoning with Portuguese Word Embeddings

Abstract
Representing words with semantic distributions to create ML models is a widely used technique to perform Natural Language processing tasks. In this paper, we trained word embedding models with different types of Portuguese corpora, analyzing the influence of the models' parameterization, the corpora size, and domain. Then we validated each model with the classical evaluation methods available: four words analogies and measurement of the similarity of pairs of words. In addition to these methods, we proposed new alternative techniques to validate word embedding models, presenting new resources for this purpose. Finally, we discussed the obtained results and argued about some limitations of the word embedding models' evaluation methods.

Optimal Coding Theorems in Time-Bounded Kolmogorov Complexity

Abstract
The classical coding theorem in Kolmogorov complexity states that if an n-bit string x is sampled with probability δ by an algorithm with prefix-free domain then 𝖪(x) ≤ log(1/δ) + O(1). In a recent work, Lu and Oliveira [Zhenjian Lu and Igor C. Oliveira, 2021] established an unconditional time-bounded version of this result, by showing that if x can be efficiently sampled with probability δ then rKt(x) = O(log(1/δ)) + O(log n), where rKt denotes the randomized analogue of Levin’s Kt complexity. Unfortunately, this result is often insufficient when transferring applications of the classical coding theorem to the time-bounded setting, as it achieves a O(log(1/δ)) bound instead of the information-theoretic optimal log(1/δ). Motivated by this discrepancy, we investigate optimal coding theorems in the time-bounded setting. Our main contributions can be summarised as follows. • Efficient coding theorem for rKt with a factor of 2. Addressing a question from [Zhenjian Lu and Igor C. Oliveira, 2021], we show that if x can be efficiently sampled with probability at least δ then rKt(x) ≤ (2 + o(1)) ⋅ log(1/δ) + O(log n). As in previous work, our coding theorem is efficient in the sense that it provides a polynomial-time probabilistic algorithm that, when given x, the code of the sampler, and δ, it outputs, with probability ≥ 0.99, a probabilistic representation of x that certifies this rKt complexity bound. • Optimality under a cryptographic assumption. Under a hypothesis about the security of cryptographic pseudorandom generators, we show that no efficient coding theorem can achieve a bound of the form rKt(x) ≤ (2 - o(1)) ⋅ log(1/δ) + poly(log n). Under a weaker assumption, we exhibit a gap between efficient coding theorems and existential coding theorems with near-optimal parameters. • Optimal coding theorem for pK^t and unconditional Antunes-Fortnow. We consider pK^t complexity [Halley Goldberg et al., 2022], a variant of rKt where the randomness is public and the time bound is fixed. We observe the existence of an optimal coding theorem for pK^t, and employ this result to establish an unconditional version of a theorem of Antunes and Fortnow [Luis Filipe Coelho Antunes and Lance Fortnow, 2009] which characterizes the worst-case running times of languages that are in average polynomial-time over all 𝖯-samplable distributions.

MUAHAH: Taking the Most out of Simple Conversational Agents

Abstract
Dialog engines based on multi-agent architectures usually select a single agent, deemed to be the most suitable for a given scenario or for responding to a specific request, and disregard the answers from all of the other available agents. In this work, we present a multi-agent plug-and-play architecture that: (i) enables the integration of different agents; (ii) includes a decision maker module, responsible for selecting a suitable answer out of the responses of different agents. As usual, a single agent can be chosen to provide the final answer, but the latter can also be obtained from the responses of several agents, according to a voting scheme. We also describe three case studies in which we test several agents and decision making strategies; and show how new agents and a new decision strategy can be easily plugged in and take advantage of this platform in different ways. Experimentation also confirms that considering several agents contributes to better responses.

NER in Archival Finding Aids

Abstract
At the moment, the vast majority of Portuguese archives with an online presence use a software solution to manage their finding aids: e.g. Digitarq or Archeevo. Most of these finding aids are written in natural language without any annotation that would enable a machine to identify named entities, geographical locations or even some dates. That would allow the machine to create smart browsing tools on top of those record contents like entity linking and record linking. In this work we have created a set of datasets to train Machine Learning algorithms to find those named entities and geographical locations. After training several algorithms we tested them in several datasets and registered their precision and accuracy. These results enabled us to achieve some conclusions about what kind of precision we can achieve with this approach in this context and what to do with the results: do we have enough precision and accuracy to create toponymic and anthroponomic indexes for archival finding aids? Is this approach suitable in this context? These are some of the questions we intend to answer along this paper.

Active Methodologies in Incoming Programming Classes (Short Paper)

Abstract
Innovative approaches in teaching programming have been required to improve the success of incoming programming students. This work presents the initial results of a teaching strategy implemented in the Algorithms subject of a Computer Science course. Ninety-five students, enrolled in this subject during the first semester of the course, participated in the research. The reported activity is related with active methodologies of teaching and Problem-Based Learning, being developed on the first day of class in groups of up to five students. The activity was based in two actions: 1) answering a questionnaire associating computing elements to daily life routines; and, 2) even without programming concepts knowledge, develop a smartphone application. Each group received a questionnaire containing 19 questions, divided into four blocks. What can be perceived with the accomplishment of this work, was the enthusiasm, motivation and engagement of the students who, even being unknown from each other, organized themselves in the groups and researched the necessary strategies to complete the challenge. The teacher acted as an advisor in the teaching process, conducting the experiment in order to lead students to find the solution.

Automated Java Challenges' Security Assessment for Training in Industry - Preliminary Results

Abstract
Secure software development is a crucial topic that companies need to address to develop high-quality software. However, it has been shown that software developers lack secure coding awareness. In this work, we use a serious game approach that presents players with Java challenges to raise Java programmers' secure coding awareness. Towards this, we adapted an existing platform, embedded in a serious game, to assess Java secure coding exercises and performed an empirical study. Our preliminary results provide a positive indication of our solution’s viability as a means of secure software development training. Our contribution can be used by practitioners and researchers alike through an overview on the implementation of automatic security assessment of Java CyberSecurity Challenges and their evaluation in an industrial context.

SHREWS: A Game with Augmented Reality for Training Computational Thinking (Short Paper)

Abstract
This paper proposes a game to help young students training Computational Thinking (CT) skills to aid in solving problems. CT is a problem-solving approach based on picking a complex problem, understand what the problem is, and develop solutions in a way that a computer or human could solve. To help in this task, Augmented Reality(AR) will provide a more engaging visual way of interaction to keep students motivated while they search for solving problems. This benefit is a consequence of the AR capability of providing a visual and dynamic representation of abstract concepts. This work investigates AR and CT concepts and the best way of combining them for training student’s skills to understand software and its effects. Thus, these concepts will be explored for the construction of learning activities to explain and create analogies to understand complex concepts related to computer programs. So the focus of the paper is the introduction of Shrews, the game created in this context. The principle and the proposed architecture are detailed. At the end, there is a description of how the game works and the current state of the prototype. We believe that the immersive experience using AR and CT concepts is one of the important aspects of the game to maintain a motivational approach to students. An exploratory prototype is created to explore the topic of teaching CT skills via playing a video game.

Understanding Effects of the Algorithm Visualized with AR Techniques (Short Paper)

Abstract
We create analogies to understand and visualize complex concepts. Such approach, based on analogies are presentation of software, is also effective when it concerns software comprehension. Many visualization techniques for data structures have been developed in 2D and 3D to improve the visual representation of large structures. A common challenge faced by developers that want to implement these techniques is to increase the amount of information to be displayed in each node seeking a balance between quantity and visibility. To overcome these challenges, this article presents a visualization technique using Augmented Reality to display hierarchical structures and understand the effects of the algorithm in data structures. The visualization system based on AR, proposed and discussed along the paper, allows the user to interact and navigate through the structure, enabling him to explore information in depth.
