Abstract
We propose a new fairness notion, motivated by the practical challenge of allocating teaching assistants (TAs) to courses in a department. Each course requires a certain number of TAs and each TA has preferences over the courses they want to assist. Similarly, each course instructor has preferences over the TAs who applied for their course. We demand fairness and efficiency for both sides separately, giving rise to the following criteria: (i) every course gets the required number of TAs and the average utility of the assigned TAs meets a threshold; (ii) the allocation of courses to TAs is envy-free, where a TA envies another TA if the former prefers the latter’s course and has a higher or equal grade in that course. Note that the definition of envy-freeness here differs from the one in the literature, and we call it merit-based envy-freeness. We show that the problem of finding a merit-based envy-free and efficient matching is NP-hard even for very restricted settings, such as two courses and uniform valuations; constant degree, constant capacity of TAs for every course, valuations in the range {0,1,2,3}, identical valuations from TAs, and even more. To find tractable results, we consider some restricted instances, such as, strict valuation of TAs for courses, the difference between the number of positively valued TAs for a course and the capacity, the number of positively valued TAs/courses, types of valuation functions, and obtained some polynomial-time solvable cases, showing the contrast with intractable results. We further studied the problem in the paradigm of parameterized algorithms and designed some exact and approximation algorithms.

A General Framework for Finding Diverse Solutions via Network Flow and Its Applications

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In this paper, we present a general framework for efficiently computing diverse solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. Given a problem instance, the goal is to find k solutions that maximize a specified diversity measure - the sum of pairwise Hamming distances or the size of the union of the k solutions. Our framework applies to problems satisfying two structural properties: (i) All solutions are of equal size and (ii) the family of all solutions can be represented by a surjection from the family of ideals of some finite poset. Under these conditions, we show that the problem of computing k diverse solutions can be reduced to the minimum cost flow problem and the maximum s-t flow problem. As applications, we demonstrate that both the unweighted minimum s-t cut problem and the stable matching problem satisfy the requirements of our framework. By utilizing the recent advances in network flows algorithms, we improve the previously known time complexities of the diverse problems, which were based on submodular function minimization.

Finding Diverse Solutions in Combinatorial Problems with a Distributive Lattice Structure

Authors: Mark de Berg, Andrés López Martínez, and Frits Spieksma

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
We generalize the polynomial-time solvability of k-Diverse Minimum s-t Cuts (De Berg et al., ISAAC'23) to a wider class of combinatorial problems whose solution sets have a distributive lattice structure. We identify three structural conditions that, when met by a problem, ensure that a k-sized multiset of maximally-diverse solutions - measured by the sum of pairwise Hamming distances - can be found in polynomial time. We apply this framework to obtain polynomial-time algorithms for finding diverse minimum s-t cuts, diverse stable matchings, and diverse market-clearing price vectors. Moreover, we show that the framework extends to two other natural measures of diversity. Lastly, we present a simpler algorithmic framework for finding a largest set of pairwise disjoint solutions in problems that meet these structural conditions.

Incremental Maximization for a Broad Class of Objectives

Authors: Yann Disser and David Weckbecker

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We consider incremental maximization problems, where the solution has to be built up gradually by adding elements one after the other. In every step, the incremental solution must be competitive, compared against the optimum solution of the current cardinality. We prove that a competitive solution always exists when the objective function is monotone and β-accountable, by providing a scaling algorithm that guarantees a constant competitive ratio. This generalizes known results and, importantly, yields the first competitive algorithm for the natural class of monotone and subadditive objective functions.

Scheduling on Identical Machines with Setup Time and Unknown Execution Time

Authors: Yasushi Kawase, Kazuhisa Makino, Vinh Long Phan, and Hanna Sumita

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 349, 19th International Symposium on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS 2025)

Abstract
In this study, we investigate a scheduling problem on identical machines in which jobs require initial setup before execution. We assume that an algorithm can dynamically form a batch (i.e., a collection of jobs to be processed together) from the remaining jobs. The setup time is modeled as a known monotone function of the set of jobs within a batch, while the execution time of each job remains unknown until completion. This uncertainty poses significant challenges for minimizing the makespan. We address these challenges by considering two scenarios: each job batch must be assigned to a single machine, or a batch may be distributed across multiple machines. For both scenarios, we analyze settings with and without preemption. Across these four settings, we design online algorithms that achieve asymptotically optimal competitive ratios with respect to both the number of jobs and the number of machines.

Minimizing Symmetric Convex Functions over Hybrid of Continuous and Discrete Convex Sets

Authors: Yasushi Kawase, Koichi Nishimura, and Hanna Sumita

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We study the problem of minimizing a given symmetric strictly convex function over the Minkowski sum of an integral base-polyhedron and an M-convex set. This problem has a hybrid of continuous and discrete structures. This emerges from the problem of allocating mixed goods, consisting of both divisible and indivisible goods, to agents with binary valuations so that the fairness measure, such as the Nash welfare, is maximized. It is known that both an integral base-polyhedron and an M-convex set have similar and nice properties, and the non-hybrid case can be solved in polynomial time. While the hybrid case lacks some of these properties, we show the structure of an optimal solution. Moreover, we exploit a proximity inherent in the problem. Through our findings, we demonstrate that our problem is NP-hard even in the fair allocation setting where all indivisible goods are identical. Moreover, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm for the fair allocation problem when all divisible goods are identical.

Online Scheduling on Identical Machines with a Metric State Space

Authors: Hiromichi Goko, Akitoshi Kawamura, Yasushi Kawase, Kazuhisa Makino, and Hanna Sumita

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 219, 39th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2022)

Abstract
This paper introduces an online scheduling problem on m identical machines with a metric state space, which generalizes the classical online scheduling problem on identical machines, the online traveling salesman problem, and the online dial-a-ride problem. Each job is associated with a source state, a destination state, a processing time, and a release time. Each machine can process a job on and after its release time. Before processing a job, a machine needs to change its state to the source state (in a time corresponding to the distance), and after the process of the job, the machine’s state becomes the destination state. While related research deals with a model in which only release times are unknown to the algorithm, this paper focuses on a general model in which destination states and processing times are also unknown. The main result of this paper is to propose a O(log m/log log m)-competitive online algorithm for the problem, which is best possible. A key approach is to divide the difficulty of the problem. To cope with unknown release times, we provide frameworks to produce a min{2ρ+1/2, ρ+2}-competitive algorithm using a ρ-competitive algorithm for a basic case where all jobs are released at time 0. Then, focusing on unknown destination states and processing times, we construct an O(log m/log log m)-competitive algorithm for the basic case. We also provide improved algorithms for some special cases.

Optimal Matroid Partitioning Problems

Authors: Yasushi Kawase, Kei Kimura, Kazuhisa Makino, and Hanna Sumita

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 92, 28th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2017)

Abstract
This paper studies optimal matroid partitioning problems for various objective functions. In the problem, we are given a finite set E and k weighted matroids (E, \mathcal{I}_i, w_i), i = 1, \dots, k, and our task is to find a minimum partition (I_1,\dots,I_k) of E such that I_i \in \mathcal{I}_i for all i. For each objective function, we give a polynomial-time algorithm or prove NP-hardness. In particular, for the case when the given weighted matroids are identical and the objective function is the sum of the maximum weight in each set (i.e., \sum_{i=1}^k\max_{e\in I_i}w_i(e)), we show that the problem is strongly NP-hard but admits a PTAS.

Parameterized Complexity of Sparse Linear Complementarity Problems

Authors: Hanna Sumita, Naonori Kakimura, and Kazuhisa Makino

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 43, 10th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2015)

Abstract
In this paper, we study the parameterized complexity of the linear complementarity problem (LCP), which is one of the most fundamental mathematical optimization problems. The parameters we focus on are the sparsities of the input and the output of the LCP: the maximum numbers of nonzero entries per row/column in the coefficient matrix and the number of nonzero entries in a solution. Our main result is to present a fixed-parameter algorithm for the LCP with all the parameters. We also show that if we drop any of the three parameters, then the LCP is fixed-parameter intractable. In addition, we discuss the nonexistence of a polynomial kernel for the LCP.
