Authors: Rajeev Alur, Mikołaj Bojańczyk, Emmanuel Filiot, Anca Muscholl, and Sarah Winter

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 13, Issue 5 (2023)

Abstract
This report documents the program and the outcomes of the Dagstuhl Seminar 23202 "Regular Transformations". The goal of this seminar was to advance on a list of topics about transducers that have gathered much interest recently, and to explore new connections between the theory of regular transformations and its applications in linguistics.

Algebraic Recognition of Regular Functions

Authors: Mikołaj Bojańczyk and Lê Thành Dũng (Tito) Nguyễn

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 261, 50th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2023)

Abstract
We consider regular string-to-string functions, i.e. functions that are recognized by copyless streaming string transducers, or any of their equivalent models, such as deterministic two-way automata. We give yet another characterization, which is very succinct: finiteness-preserving functors from the category of semigroups to itself, together with a certain output function that is a natural transformation.

Countdown μ-Calculus

Authors: Jędrzej Kołodziejski and Bartek Klin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 241, 47th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2022)

Abstract
We introduce the countdown μ-calculus, an extension of the modal μ-calculus with ordinal approximations of fixpoint operators. In addition to properties definable in the classical calculus, it can express (un)boundedness properties such as the existence of arbitrarily long sequences of specific actions. The standard correspondence with parity games and automata extends to suitably defined countdown games and automata. However, unlike in the classical setting, the scalar fragment is provably weaker than the full vectorial calculus and corresponds to automata satisfying a simple syntactic condition. We establish some facts, in particular decidability of the model checking problem and strictness of the hierarchy induced by the maximal allowed nesting of our new operators.

First-Order Logic with Connectivity Operators

Authors: Nicole Schirrmacher, Sebastian Siebertz, and Alexandre Vigny

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 216, 30th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2022)

Abstract
First-order logic (FO) can express many algorithmic problems on graphs, such as the independent set and dominating set problem parameterized by solution size. On the other hand, FO cannot express the very simple algorithmic question whether two vertices are connected. We enrich FO with connectivity predicates that are tailored to express algorithmic graph properties that are commonly studied in parameterized algorithmics. By adding the atomic predicates conn_k(x,y,z_1,…,z_k) that hold true in a graph if there exists a path between (the valuations of) x and y after (the valuations of) z_1,…,z_k have been deleted, we obtain separator logic FO+conn. We show that separator logic can express many interesting problems such as the feedback vertex set problem and elimination distance problems to first-order definable classes. Denote by FO+conn_k the fragment of separator logic that is restricted to connectivity predicates with at most k+2 variables (that is, at most k deletions). We show that FO+conn_{k+1} is strictly more expressive than FO+conn_k for all k ≥ 0. We then study the limitations of separator logic and prove that it cannot express planarity, and, in particular, not the disjoint paths problem. We obtain the stronger disjoint-paths logic FO+DP by adding the atomic predicates disjoint-paths_k[(x_1,y_1),…,(x_k,y_k)] that evaluate to true if there are internally vertex-disjoint paths between (the valuations of) x_i and y_i for all 1 ≤ i ≤ k. Disjoint-paths logic can express the disjoint paths problem, the problem of (topological) minor containment, the problem of hitting (topological) minors, and many more. Again we show that the fragments FO+DP_k that use predicates for at most k disjoint paths form a strict hierarchy of expressiveness. Finally, we compare the expressive power of the new logics with that of transitive-closure logics and monadic second-order logic.

Comparison-Free Polyregular Functions

Authors: Lê Thành Dũng (Tito) Nguyễn, Camille Noûs, and Pierre Pradic

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 198, 48th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2021)

Abstract
This paper introduces a new automata-theoretic class of string-to-string functions with polynomial growth. Several equivalent definitions are provided: a machine model which is a restricted variant of pebble transducers, and a few inductive definitions that close the class of regular functions under certain operations. Our motivation for studying this class comes from another characterization, which we merely mention here but prove elsewhere, based on a λ-calculus with a linear type system. As their name suggests, these comparison-free polyregular functions form a subclass of polyregular functions; we prove that the inclusion is strict. We also show that they are incomparable with HDT0L transductions, closed under usual function composition - but not under a certain "map" combinator - and satisfy a comparison-free version of the pebble minimization theorem. On the broader topic of polynomial growth transductions, we also consider the recently introduced layered streaming string transducers (SSTs), or equivalently k-marble transducers. We prove that a function can be obtained by composing such transducers together if and only if it is polyregular, and that k-layered SSTs (or k-marble transducers) are closed under "map" and equivalent to a corresponding notion of (k+1)-layered HDT0L systems.

Some Remarks on Deciding Equivalence for Graph-To-Graph Transducers

Authors: Mikołaj Bojańczyk and Janusz Schmude

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 170, 45th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2020)

Abstract
We study the following decision problem: given two mso transductions that input and output graphs of bounded treewidth, decide if they are equivalent, i.e. isomorphic inputs give isomorphic outputs. We do not know how to decide it, but we propose an approach that uses automata manipulating elements of a ring extended with division. The approach works for a variant of the problem, where isomorphism on output graphs is replaced by a relaxation of isomorphism.

Single-Use Automata and Transducers for Infinite Alphabets

Authors: Mikołaj Bojańczyk and Rafał Stefański

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 168, 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020)

Abstract
Our starting point are register automata for data words, in the style of Kaminski and Francez. We study the effects of the single-use restriction, which says that a register is emptied immediately after being used. We show that under the single-use restriction, the theory of automata for data words becomes much more robust. The main results are: (a) five different machine models are equivalent as language acceptors, including one-way and two-way single-use register automata; (b) one can recover some of the algebraic theory of languages over finite alphabets, including a version of the Krohn-Rhodes Theorem; (c) there is also a robust theory of transducers, with four equivalent models, including two-way single use transducers and a variant of streaming string transducers for data words. These results are in contrast with automata for data words without the single-use restriction, where essentially all models are pairwise non-equivalent.

String-to-String Interpretations With Polynomial-Size Output (Track B: Automata, Logic, Semantics, and Theory of Programming)

Authors: Mikołaj Bojańczyk, Sandra Kiefer, and Nathan Lhote

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 132, 46th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2019)

Abstract
String-to-string MSO interpretations are like Courcelle’s MSO transductions, except that a single output position can be represented using a tuple of input positions instead of just a single input position. In particular, the output length is polynomial in the input length, as opposed to MSO transductions, which have output of linear length. We show that string-to-string MSO interpretations are exactly the polyregular functions. The latter class has various characterisations, one of which is that it consists of the string-to-string functions recognised by pebble transducers. Our main result implies the surprising fact that string-to-string MSO interpretations are closed under composition.

Orbit-Finite Sets and Their Algorithms (Invited Talk)

Authors: Mikolaj Bojanczyk

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 80, 44th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2017)

Abstract
An introduction to orbit-finite sets, which are a type of sets that are infinite enough to describe interesting examples, and finite enough to have algorithms running on them. The notion of orbit-finiteness is illustrated on the example of register automata, an automaton model dealing with infinite alphabets.
