A Certified Algorithm for AC-Unification

Abstract
Implementing unification modulo Associativity and Commutativity (AC) axioms is crucial in rewrite-based programming and theorem provers. We modify Stickel’s seminal AC-unification algorithm to avoid mutual recursion and formalise it in the PVS proof assistant. More precisely, we prove the adjusted algorithm’s termination, soundness, and completeness. To do this, we adapted Fages' termination proof, providing a unique elaborated measure that guarantees termination of the modified AC-unification algorithm. This development (to the best of our knowledge) provides the first fully formalised AC-unification algorithm.

Fixed-Point Constraints for Nominal Equational Unification

Abstract
We propose a new axiomatisation of the alpha-equivalence relation for nominal terms, based on a primitive notion of fixed-point constraint. We show that the standard freshness relation between atoms and terms can be derived from the more primitive notion of permutation fixed-point, and use this result to prove the correctness of the new alpha-equivalence axiomatisation. This gives rise to a new notion of nominal unification, where solutions for unification problems are pairs of a fixed-point context and a substitution. Although it may seem less natural than the standard notion of nominal unifier based on freshness constraints, the notion of unifier based on fixed-point constraints behaves better when equational theories are considered: for example, nominal unification remains finitary in the presence of commutativity, whereas it becomes infinitary when unifiers are expressed using freshness contexts.

Nominal Narrowing

Abstract
Nominal unification is a generalisation of first-order unification that takes alpha-equivalence into account. In this paper, we study nominal unification in the context of equational theories. We introduce nominal narrowing and design a general nominal E-unification procedure, which is sound and complete for a wide class of equational theories. We give examples of application.

Confluence of Orthogonal Nominal Rewriting Systems Revisited

Abstract
Nominal rewriting systems (Fernandez, Gabbay, Mackie, 2004; Fernandez, Gabbay, 2007) have been introduced as a new framework of higher-order rewriting systems based on the nominal approach (Gabbay, Pitts, 2002; Pitts, 2003), which deals with variable binding via permutations and freshness conditions on atoms. Confluence of orthogonal nominal rewriting systems has been shown in (Fernandez, Gabbay, 2007). However, their definition of (non-trivial) critical pairs has a serious weakness so that the orthogonality does not actually hold for most of standard nominal rewriting systems in the presence of binders. To overcome this weakness, we divide the notion of overlaps into the self-rooted and proper ones, and introduce a notion of alpha-stability which guarantees alpha-equivalence of peaks from the self-rooted overlaps. Moreover, we give a sufficient criterion for uniformity and alpha-stability. The new definition of orthogonality and the criterion offer a novel confluence condition effectively applicable to many standard nominal rewriting systems. We also report on an implementation of a confluence prover for orthogonal nominal rewriting systems based on our framework.

Dependent Types for Nominal Terms with Atom Substitutions

Abstract
Nominal terms are an extended first-order language for specifying and verifying properties of syntax with binding. Founded upon the semantics of nominal sets, the success of nominal terms with regard to systems of equational reasoning is already well established. This work first extends the untyped language of nominal terms with a notion of non-capturing atom substitution for object-level names and then proposes a dependent type system for this extended language. Both these contributions are intended to serve as a prelude to a future nominal logical framework based upon nominal equational reasoning and thus an extended example is given to demonstrate that this system is capable of encoding various other formal systems of interest.
