Abstract
We address the task of deriving fixpoint equations from modal logics characterizing behavioural equivalences and metrics (summarized under the term conformances). We rely on an earlier work that obtains Hennessy-Milner theorems as corollaries to a fixpoint preservation property along Galois connections between suitable lattices. We instantiate this to the setting of coalgebras, in which we spell out the compatibility property ensuring that we can derive a behaviour function whose greatest fixpoint coincides with the logical conformance. We then concentrate on the linear-time case, for which we study coalgebras based on the machine functor living in Eilenberg-Moore categories, a scenario for which we obtain a particularly simple logic and fixpoint equation. The theory is instantiated to concrete examples, both in the branching-time case (bisimilarity and behavioural metrics) and in the linear-time case (trace equivalences and trace distances).

Fast and Robust Quantum State Tomography from Few Basis Measurements

Authors: Daniel Stilck França, Fernando G.S L. Brandão, and Richard Kueng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 197, 16th Conference on the Theory of Quantum Computation, Communication and Cryptography (TQC 2021)

Abstract
Quantum state tomography is a powerful but resource-intensive, general solution for numerous quantum information processing tasks. This motivates the design of robust tomography procedures that use relevant resources as sparingly as possible. Important cost factors include the number of state copies and measurement settings, as well as classical postprocessing time and memory. In this work, we present and analyze an online tomography algorithm designed to optimize all the aforementioned resources at the cost of a worse dependence on accuracy. The protocol is the first to give provably optimal performance in terms of rank and dimension for state copies, measurement settings and memory. Classical runtime is also reduced substantially and numerical experiments demonstrate a favorable comparison with other state-of-the-art techniques. Further improvements are possible by executing the algorithm on a quantum computer, giving a quantum speedup for quantum state tomography.

Automata Theory on Sliding Windows

Authors: Moses Ganardi, Danny Hucke, Daniel König, Markus Lohrey, and Konstantinos Mamouras

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 96, 35th Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2018)

Abstract
In a recent paper we analyzed the space complexity of streaming algorithms whose goal is to decide membership of a sliding window to a fixed language. For the class of regular languages we proved a space trichotomy theorem: for every regular language the optimal space bound is either constant, logarithmic or linear. In this paper we continue this line of research: We present natural characterizations for the constant and logarithmic space classes and establish tight relationships to the concept of language growth. We also analyze the space complexity with respect to automata size and prove almost matching lower and upper bounds. Finally, we consider the decision problem whether a language given by a DFA/NFA admits a sliding window algorithm using logarithmic/constant space.

Knapsack Problems for Wreath Products

Authors: Moses Ganardi, Daniel König, Markus Lohrey, and Georg Zetzsche

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 96, 35th Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2018)

Abstract
In recent years, knapsack problems for (in general non-commutative) groups have attracted attention. In this paper, the knapsack problem for wreath products is studied. It turns out that decidability of knapsack is not preserved under wreath product. On the other hand, the class of knapsack-semilinear groups, where solutions sets of knapsack equations are effectively semilinear, is closed under wreath product. As a consequence, we obtain the decidability of knapsack for free solvable groups. Finally, it is shown that for every non-trivial abelian group G, knapsack (as well as the related subset sum problem) for the wreath product G \wr Z is NP-complete.

Circuit Evaluation for Finite Semirings

Authors: Moses Ganardi, Danny Hucke, Daniel König, and Markus Lohrey

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 66, 34th Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2017)

Abstract
The circuit evaluation problem for finite semirings is considered, where semirings are not assumed to have an additive or multiplicative identity. The following dichotomy is shown: If a finite semiring R (i) has a solvable multiplicative semigroup and (ii) does not contain a subsemiring with an additive identity 0 and a multiplicative identity 1 != 0, then its circuit evaluation problem is in the complexity class DET (which is contained in NC^2). In all other cases, the circuit evaluation problem is P-complete.

Multi-Dimensional Commodity Covering for Tariff Selection in Transportation

Authors: Felix G. König, Jannik Matuschke, and Alexander Richter

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 25, 12th Workshop on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (2012)

Abstract
In this paper, we study a multi-dimensional commodity covering problem, which we encountered as a subproblem in optimizing large scale transportation networks in logistics. The problem asks for a selection of containers for transporting a given set of commodities, each commodity having different extensions of properties such as weight or volume. Each container can be selected multiple times and is specified by a fixed charge and capacities in the relevant properties. The task is to find a cost minimal collection of containers and a feasible assignment of the demand to all selected containers. From theoretical point of view, by exploring similarities to the well known SetCover problem, we derive NP-hardness and see that the non-approximability result known for set cover also carries over to our problem. For practical applications we need very fast heuristics to be integrated into a meta-heuristic framework that - depending on the context - either provide feasible near optimal solutions or only estimate the cost value of an optimal solution. We develop and analyze a flexible family of greedy algorithms that meet these challenges. In order to find best-performing configurations for different requirements of the meta-heuristic framework, we provide an extensive computational study on random and real world instance sets obtained from our project partner 4flow AG. We outline a trade-off between running times and solution quality and conclude that the proposed methods achieve the accuracy and efficiency necessary for serving as a key ingredient in more complex meta-heuristics enabling the optimization of large-scale networks.
