Generalized Bundled Fragments for First-Order Modal Logic

Authors: Mo Liu, Anantha Padmanabha, R. Ramanujam, and Yanjing Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 241, 47th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2022)

Abstract
When we bundle quantifiers and modalities together (as in ∃x□, ◇∀x etc.) in first-order modal logic (FOML), we get new logical operators whose combinations produce interesting bundled fragments of FOML. It is well-known that finding decidable fragments of FOML is hard, but existing work shows that certain bundled fragments are decidable [Anantha Padmanabha et al., 2018], without any restriction on the arity of predicates, the number of variables, or the modal scope. In this paper, we explore generalized bundles such as ∀x∀y□, ∀x∃y◇ etc., and map the terrain with regard to decidability, presenting both decidability and undecidability results. In particular, we propose the loosely bundled fragment, which is decidable over increasing domains and encompasses all known decidable bundled fragments.

Two variable fragment of Term Modal Logic

Authors: Anantha Padmanabha and R. Ramanujam

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 138, 44th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2019)

Abstract
Term modal logics (TML) are modal logics with unboundedly many modalities, with quantification over modal indices, so that we can have formulas of the form Exists y Forall x (Box_x P(x,y) implies Diamond_y P(y,x)). Like First order modal logic, TML is also "notoriously" undecidable, in the sense that even very simple fragments are undecidable. In this paper, we show the decidability of one interesting fragment, that of two variable TML. This is in contrast to two-variable First order modal logic, which is undecidable.

Bundled Fragments of First-Order Modal Logic: (Un)Decidability

Authors: Anantha Padmanabha, R Ramanujam, and Yanjing Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 122, 38th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2018)

Abstract
Quantified modal logic is notorious for being undecidable, with very few known decidable fragments such as the monodic ones. For instance, even the two-variable fragment over unary predicates is undecidable. In this paper, we study a particular fragment, namely the bundled fragment, where a first-order quantifier is always followed by a modality when occurring in the formula, inspired by the proposal of [Yanjing Wang, 2017] in the context of non-standard epistemic logics of know-what, know-how, know-why, and so on. As always with quantified modal logics, it makes a significant difference whether the domain stays the same across possible worlds. In particular, we show that the predicate logic with the bundle "forall Box" alone is undecidable over constant domain interpretations, even with only monadic predicates, whereas having the "exists Box" bundle instead gives us a decidable logic. On the other hand, over increasing domain interpretations, we get decidability with both "forall Box" and "exists Box" bundles with unrestricted predicates, where we obtain tableau based procedures that run in PSPACE. We further show that the "exists Box" bundle cannot distinguish between constant domain and variable domain interpretations.

Justified Representation in Multiwinner Voting: Axioms and Algorithms

Authors: Edith Elkind

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 93, 37th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2017)

Abstract
Suppose that a group of voters wants to select k 1 alternatives from a given set, and each voter indicates which of the alternatives are acceptable to her: the alternatives could be conference submissions, applicants for a scholarship or locations for a fast food chain. In this setting it is natural to require that the winning set represents the voters fairly, in the sense that large groups of voters with similar preferences have at least some of their approved alternatives in the winning set. We describe several ways to formalize this idea, and show how to use it to classify voting rules; surprisingly, two voting rules proposed in the XIXth century turn out to play an important role in our analysis.

A Markov Chain Theory Approach to Characterizing the Minimax Optimality of Stochastic Gradient Descent (for Least Squares)

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 93, 37th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2017)

Abstract
This work provides a simplified proof of the statistical minimax optimality of (iterate averaged) stochastic gradient descent (SGD), for the special case of least squares. This result is obtained by analyzing SGD as a stochastic process and by sharply characterizing the stationary covariance matrix of this process. The finite rate optimality characterization captures the constant factors and addresses model mis-specification.

Matrix Estimation, Latent Variable Model and Collaborative Filtering

Authors: Devavrat Shah

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 93, 37th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2017)

Abstract
Estimating a matrix based on partial, noisy observations is prevalent in variety of modern applications with recommendation system being a prototypical example. The non-parametric latent variable model provides canonical representation for such matrix data when the underlying distribution satisfies ``exchangeability'' with graphons and stochastic block model being recent examples of interest. Collaborative filtering has been a successfully utilized heuristic in practice since the dawn of e-commerce. In this extended abstract, we will argue that collaborative filtering (and its variants) solve matrix estimation for a generic latent variable model with near optimal sample complexity.

Some Open Problems in Information-Theoretic Cryptography

Authors: Vinod Vaikuntanathan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 93, 37th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2017)

Abstract
Information-theoretic cryptography is full of open problems with a communication-complexity flavor. We will describe several such problems that arise in the study of private information retrieval, secure multi-party computation, secret sharing, private simultaneous messages (PSM) and conditional disclosure of secrets (CDS). In all these cases, there is a huge (exponential) gap between the best known upper and lower bounds. We will also describe the connections between these problems, some old and some new.

Monitoring for Silent Actions

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 93, 37th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2017)

Abstract
Silent actions are an essential mechanism for system modelling and specification. They are used to abstractly report the occurrence of computation steps without divulging their precise details, thereby enabling the description of important aspects such as the branching structure of a system. Yet, their use rarely features in specification logics used in runtime verification. We study monitorability aspects of a branching-time logic that employs silent actions, identifying which formulas are monitorable for a number of instrumentation setups. We also consider defective instrumentation setups that imprecisely report silent events, and establish monitorability results for tolerating these imperfections.

Abstract
Let M be a triangulated, orientable 2-manifold of genus g without boundary, and let h be a height function over M that is linear within each triangle. We present a kinetic data structure (KDS) for maintaining the Reeb graph R of h as the heights of M's vertices vary continuously with time. Assuming the heights of two vertices of M become equal only O(1) times, the KDS processes O((k + g) n \polylog n) events; n is the number of vertices in M, and k is the number of external events which change the combinatorial structure of R. Each event is processed in O(\log^2 n) time, and the total size of our KDS is O(gn). The KDS can be extended to maintain an augmented Reeb graph as well.

Abstract
For a family of graphs F, an n-vertex graph G, and a positive integer k, the F-Deletion problem asks whether we can delete at most k vertices from G to obtain a graph in F. F-Deletion generalizes many classical graph problems such as Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, and Odd Cycle Transversal. A (multi) graph G = (V, \cup_{i=1}^{\alpha} E_{i}), where the edge set of G is partitioned into \alpha color classes, is called an \alpha-edge-colored graph. A natural extension of the F-Deletion problem to edge-colored graphs is the Simultaneous (F_1, \ldots, F_\alpha)-Deletion problem. In the latter problem, we are given an \alpha-edge-colored graph G and the goal is to find a set S of at most k vertices such that each graph G_i - S, where G_i = (V, E_i) and 1 \leq i \leq \alpha, is in F_i. Recently, a subset of the authors considered the aforementioned problem with F_1 = \ldots = F_\alpha being the family of all forests. They showed that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by k and \alpha, and can be solved in O(2^{O(\alpha k)}n^{O(1)}) time. In this work, we initiate the investigation of the complexity of Simultaneous (F_1, \ldots, F_\alpha)-Deletion with different families of graphs. In the process, we obtain a complete characterization of the parameterized complexity of this problem when one or more of the F_i's is the class of bipartite graphs and the rest (if any) are forests. We show that if F_1 is the family of all bipartite graphs and each of F_2 = F_3 = \ldots = F_\alpha is the family of all forests then the problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by k and \alpha. However, even when F_1 and F_2 are both the family of all bipartite graphs, then the Simultaneous (F_1, F_2)-Deletion} problem itself is already W[1]-hard.
