Generalised Quantifiers Based on Rabin-Mostowski Index

Abstract
In this work we introduce new generalised quantifiers which allow us to express the Rabin-Mostowski index of automata. Our main results study expressive power and decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) logic extended with these quantifiers. We study these problems in the realm of both ω-words and infinite trees. As it turns out, the pictures in these two cases are very different. In the case of ω-words the new quantifiers can be effectively expressed in pure MSO logic. In contrast, in the case of infinite trees, addition of these quantifiers leads to an undecidable formalism. To realise index-quantifier elimination, we consider the extension of MSO by game quantifiers. As a tool, we provide a specific quantifier-elimination procedure for them. Moreover, we introduce a novel construction of transducers realising strategies in ω-regular games with monadic parameters.

The Complexity of Reachability Problems in Strongly Connected Finite Automata

Authors: Stefan Kiefer and Andrew Ryzhikov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Several reachability problems in finite automata, such as completeness of NFAs and synchronisation of total DFAs, correspond to fundamental properties of sets of nonnegative matrices. In particular, the two mentioned properties correspond to matrix mortality and ergodicity, which ask whether there exists a product of the input matrices that is equal to, respectively, the zero matrix and a matrix with a column of strictly positive entries only. The case where the input automaton is strongly connected (that is, the corresponding set of nonnegative matrices is irreducible) frequently appears in applications and often admits better properties than the general case. In this paper, we address the existence of such properties from the computational complexity point of view, and develop a versatile technique to show that several NL-complete problems remain NL-complete in the strongly connected case. In particular, we show that deciding if a binary total DFA is synchronising is NL-complete even if it is promised to be strongly connected, and that deciding completeness of a binary unambiguous NFA with very limited nondeterminism is NL-complete under the same promise.

Generalized De Bruijn Words, Invertible Necklaces, and the Burrows-Wheeler Transform

Authors: Gabriele Fici and Estéban Gabory

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We define generalized de Bruijn words as those words having a Burrows-Wheeler transform that is a concatenation of permutations of the alphabet. We show that generalized de Bruijn words are in 1-to-1 correspondence with Hamiltonian cycles in the generalized de Bruijn graphs, introduced in the early '80s in the context of network design. When the size of the alphabet is a prime p, we define invertible necklaces as those whose BWT-matrix is non-singular. We show that invertible necklaces of length n correspond to normal bases of the finite field 𝔽_{pⁿ}, and that they form an Abelian group isomorphic to the Reutenauer group RG_pⁿ. Using known results in abstract algebra, we can make a bridge between generalized de Bruijn words and invertible necklaces. In particular, we highlight a correspondence between binary de Bruijn words of order d+1, binary necklaces of length 2^{d} having an odd number of 1’s, invertible BWT matrices of size 2^{d}× 2^{d}, and normal bases of the finite field 𝔽_{2^{2^{d}}}.

Morphisms and BWT-Run Sensitivity

Authors: Gabriele Fici, Giuseppe Romana, Marinella Sciortino, and Cristian Urbina

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We study how the application of morphisms affects the number r of equal-letter runs in the Burrows–Wheeler Transform (BWT). This parameter has emerged as a key repetitiveness measure in compressed indexing. We focus on the notion of BWT-run sensitivity after application of morphisms. For binary alphabets, we characterize the class of injective morphisms that preserve the number of BWT-runs up to a bounded additive increase by showing that it coincides with the known class of primitivity-preserving morphisms, which are those that map primitive words to primitive words. We further prove that deciding whether a given binary morphism has bounded BWT-run sensitivity is possible in polynomial time with respect to the total length of the images of the two letters. Additionally, we explore new structural and combinatorial properties of synchronizing and recognizable morphisms. These results establish new connections between BWT-based compressibility, code theory, and symbolic dynamics.

Characterizations of Fragments of Temporal Logic over Mazurkiewicz Traces

Authors: Bharat Adsul, Paul Gastin, and Shantanu Kulkarni

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
We study fragments of temporal logics over Mazurkiewicz traces which are well known and established partial-order models of concurrent behaviours. We focus on concurrent versions of "strict past" and "strict future" modalities. Over words, the corresponding fragments have been shown to coincide with natural algebraic conditions on the recognizing monoids. We provide non-trivial generalizations of these classical results to traces. We exploit the local nature of the temporal modalities and obtain modular translations of specifications into asynchronous automata. More specifically, we provide novel characterizations of these fragments via local cascade products of a very simple two-state asynchronous automaton operating on a single process.

BWT and Combinatorics on Words

Abstract
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) is a reversible transformation on words (strings) introduced in 1994 in the context of data compression, which is a permutation of the characters in the word. Its clustering effect, i.e., the remarkable property of grouping identical characters (BWT runs) when they share common contexts, has made it a powerful tool for boosting compression performances and enabling efficient pattern searching in highly repetitive string collections. In this chapter, we analyze the Burrows-Wheeler transform under the combinatorial point of view, and we survey known properties and connections with different aspects of combinatorics on words. In particular, we focus on the properties of words in relation to the number of their BWT runs. The value r, which counts the number of BWT runs, impacts both compression performance and indexing efficiency, and is considered a measure to evaluate the above-mentioned clustering effect and, consequently, the repetitiveness of a word. We give an overview of the results relating r to other combinatorial repetitiveness measures related to the factor complexity. The chapter also explores extremal cases of the clustering effect. Finally, some results on the sensitivity of the measure r are considered, where the effects of combinatorial operations are studied, such as reversal, edits, and the application of morphisms.

A Survey of the Bijective Burrows-Wheeler Transform

Authors: Hideo Bannai, Dominik Köppl, and Zsuzsanna Lipták

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 131, The Expanding World of Compressed Data: A Festschrift for Giovanni Manzini's 60th Birthday (2025)

Abstract
The Bijective BWT (BBWT), conceived by Scott in 2007, later summarized in a preprint by Gil and Scott in 2009 (arXiv 2012), is a variant of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform which is bijective: every string is the BBWT of some string. Indeed, the BBWT of a string is the extended BWT [Mantaci et al., 2007] of the factors of its Lyndon factorization. The BBWT has been receiving increasing interest in recent years. In this paper, we survey existing research on the BBWT, starting with its history and motivation. We then present algorithmic topics including construction algorithms with various complexities and an index on top of the BBWT for pattern matching. We subsequently address some properties of the BBWT as a compressor, discussing robustness to operations such as reversal, edits, rotation, as well as compression power. We close with listing other bijective variants of the BWT and open problems concerning the BBWT.

Higher-Dimensional Automata: Extension to Infinite Tracks

Authors: Luc Passemard, Amazigh Amrane, and Uli Fahrenberg

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
We introduce higher-dimensional automata for infinite interval ipomsets (ω-HDAs). We define key concepts from different points of view, inspired from their finite counterparts. Then we explore languages recognized by ω-HDAs under Büchi and Muller semantics. We show that Muller acceptance is more expressive than Büchi acceptance and, in contrast to the finite case, both semantics do not yield languages closed under subsumption. Then, we adapt the original rational operations to deal with ω-HDAs and show that while languages of ω-HDAs are ω-rational, not all ω-rational languages can be expressed by ω-HDAs.

Algebraic Language Theory with Effects

Abstract
Regular languages - the languages accepted by deterministic finite automata - are known to be precisely the languages recognized by finite monoids. This characterization is the origin of algebraic language theory. In this paper, we generalize the correspondence between automata and monoids to automata with generic computational effects given by a monad, providing the foundations of an effectful algebraic language theory. We show that, under suitable conditions on the monad, a language is computable by an effectful automaton precisely when it is recognizable by (1) an effectful monoid morphism into an effect-free finite monoid, and (2) a monoid morphism into a monad-monoid bialgebra whose carrier is a finitely generated algebra for the monad, the former mode of recognition being conceptually completely new. Our prime application is a novel algebraic approach to languages computed by probabilistic finite automata. Additionally, we derive new algebraic characterizations for nondeterministic probabilistic finite automata and for weighted finite automata over unrestricted semirings, generalizing previous results on weighted algebraic recognition over commutative rings.

Saturation Problems for Families of Automata

Authors: León Bohn, Yong Li, Christof Löding, and Sven Schewe

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Families of deterministic finite automata (FDFA) represent regular ω-languages through their ultimately periodic words (UP-words). An FDFA accepts pairs of words, where the first component corresponds to a prefix of the UP-word, and the second component represents a period of that UP-word. An FDFA is termed saturated if, for each UP-word, either all or none of the pairs representing that UP-word are accepted. We demonstrate that determining whether a given FDFA is saturated can be accomplished in polynomial time, thus improving the known PSPACE upper bound by an exponential. We illustrate the application of this result by presenting the first polynomial learning algorithms for representations of the class of all regular ω-languages. Furthermore, we establish that deciding a weaker property, referred to as almost saturation, is PSPACE-complete. Since FDFAs do not necessarily define regular ω-languages when they are not saturated, we also address the regularity problem and show that it is PSPACE-complete. Finally, we explore a variant of FDFAs called families of deterministic weak automata (FDWA), where the semantics for the periodic part of the UP-word considers ω-words instead of finite words. We demonstrate that saturation for FDWAs is also decidable in polynomial time, that FDWAs always define regular ω-languages, and we compare the succinctness of these different models.

Abstract
We study density of rational languages under shift invariant probability measures on spaces of two-sided infinite words, which generalizes the classical notion of density studied in formal languages and automata theory. The density for a language is defined as the limit in average (if it exists) of the probability that a word of a given length belongs to the language. We establish the existence of densities for all rational languages under all shift invariant measures. We also give explicit formulas under certain conditions, in particular when the language is aperiodic. Our approach combines tools and ideas from semigroup theory and ergodic theory.

Covers in Optimal Space

Authors: Itai Boneh and Shay Golan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 331, 36th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2025)

Abstract
A cover of a string S is a string C such that every index of S is contained in some occurrence of C. First introduced by Apostolico and Ehrenfeucht [TCS'93] over 30 years ago, covers have since received significant attention in the string algorithms community. In this work, we present a space-efficient algorithm for computing a compact representation of all covers of a given string. Our algorithm requires only O(log n) additional memory while accessing the input string of length n in a read-only manner. Moreover, it runs in O(n) time, matching the best-known time complexity for this problem while achieving an exponential improvement in space usage.

Net Occurrences in Fibonacci and Thue-Morse Words

Authors: Peaker Guo and Kaisei Kishi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 331, 36th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2025)

Abstract
A net occurrence of a repeated string in a text is an occurrence with unique left and right extensions, and the net frequency of the string is the number of its net occurrences in the text. Originally introduced for applications in Natural Language Processing, net frequency has recently gained attention for its algorithmic aspects. Guo et al. [CPM 2024] and Ohlebusch et al. [SPIRE 2024] focus on its computation in the offline setting, while Guo et al. [SPIRE 2024], Inenaga [arXiv 2024], and Mieno and Inenaga [CPM 2025] tackle the online counterpart. Mieno and Inenaga also characterize net occurrences in terms of the minimal unique substrings of the text. Additionally, Guo et al. [CPM 2024] initiate the study of net occurrences in Fibonacci words to establish a lower bound on the asymptotic running time of algorithms. Although there has been notable progress in algorithmic developments and some initial combinatorial insights, the combinatorial aspects of net occurrences have yet to be thoroughly examined. In this work, we make two key contributions. First, we confirm the conjecture that each Fibonacci word contains exactly three net occurrences. Second, we show that each Thue-Morse word contains exactly nine net occurrences. To achieve these results, we introduce the notion of overlapping net occurrence cover, which narrows down the candidate net occurrences in any text. Furthermore, we provide a precise characterization of occurrences of Fibonacci and Thue-Morse words of smaller order, offering structural insights that may have independent interest and potential applications in algorithm analysis and combinatorial properties of these words.

Efficiently Computing the Minimum Rank of a Matrix in a Monoid of Zero-One Matrices

Authors: Stefan Kiefer and Andrew Ryzhikov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
A zero-one matrix is a matrix with entries from {0, 1}. We study monoids containing only such matrices. A finite set of zero-one matrices generating such a monoid can be seen as the matrix representation of an unambiguous finite automaton, an important generalisation of deterministic finite automata which shares many of their good properties. Let 𝒜 be a finite set of n×n zero-one matrices generating a monoid of zero-one matrices, and m be the cardinality of 𝒜. We study the computational complexity of computing the minimum rank of a matrix in the monoid generated by 𝒜. By using linear-algebraic techniques, we show that this problem is in NC and can be solved in 𝒪(mn⁴) time. We also provide a combinatorial algorithm finding a matrix of minimum rank in 𝒪(n^{2 + ω} + mn⁴) time, where 2 ≤ ω ≤ 2.4 is the matrix multiplication exponent. As a byproduct, we show a very weak version of a generalisation of the Černý conjecture: there always exists a straight line program of size 𝒪(n²) describing a product resulting in a matrix of minimum rank. For the special case corresponding to complete DFAs (that is, for the case where all matrices have exactly one 1 in each row), the minimum rank is the size of the smallest image of the set of states under the action of a word. Our combinatorial algorithm finds a matrix of minimum rank in time 𝒪(n³ + mn²) in this case.

The Degree of a Finite Set of Words

Authors: Dominique Perrin and Andrew Ryzhikov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 182, 40th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2020)

Abstract
We generalize the notions of the degree and composition from uniquely decipherable codes to arbitrary finite sets of words. We prove that if X = Y∘Z is a composition of finite sets of words with Y complete, then d(X) = d(Y) ⋅ d(Z), where d(T) is the degree of T. We also show that a finite set is synchronizing if and only if its degree equals one. This is done by considering, for an arbitrary finite set X of words, the transition monoid of an automaton recognizing X^* with multiplicities. We prove a number of results for such monoids, which generalize corresponding results for unambiguous monoids of relations.
