Abstract
For any natural number d, a graph G is a (disjoint) d-interval graph if it is the intersection graph of (disjoint) d-intervals, the union of d (disjoint) intervals on the real line. Two important subclasses of d-interval graphs are unit and balanced d-interval graphs (where every interval has unit length or all the intervals associated to a same vertex have the same length, respectively). A celebrated result by Roberts gives a simple characterization of unit interval graphs being exactly claw-free interval graphs. Here, we study the generalization of this characterization for d-interval graphs. In particular, we prove that for any d ⩾ 2, if G is a K_{1,2d+1}-free interval graph, then G is a unit d-interval graph. However, somehow surprisingly, under the same assumptions, G is not always a disjoint unit d-interval graph. This implies that the class of disjoint unit d-interval graphs is strictly included in the class of unit d-interval graphs. Finally, we study the relationships between the classes obtained under disjoint and non-disjoint d-intervals in the balanced case and show that the classes of disjoint balanced 2-intervals and balanced 2-intervals coincide, but this is no longer true for d > 2.

Scheduling with Locality by Routing

Authors: Alison Hsiang-Hsuan Liu and Fu-Hong Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 306, 49th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2024)

Abstract
This work examines a strongly NP-hard routing problem on trees, in which multiple servers need to serve a given set of requests (on vertices), where the routes of the servers start from a common source and end at their respective terminals. Each server can travel free of cost on its source-to-terminal path but has to pay for travel on other edges. The objective is to minimize the maximum cost over all servers. As the servers may pay different costs for traveling through a common edge, balancing the loads of the servers can be difficult. We propose a polynomial-time 4-approximation algorithm that applies the parametric pruning framework but consists of two phases. The first phase of the algorithm partitions the requests into packets, and the second phase of the algorithm assigns the packets to the servers. Unlike the standard parametric pruning techniques, the challenge of our algorithm design and analysis is to harmoniously relate the quality of the partition in the first phase, the balances of the servers' loads in the second phase, and the hypothetical optimal values of the framework. For the problem in general graphs, we show that there is no algorithm better than 2-approximate unless P = NP. The problem is a generalization of unrelated machine scheduling and other classic scheduling problems. It also models scheduling problems where the job processing times depend on the machine serving the job and the other jobs served by that machine. This modeling provides a framework that physicalizes scheduling problems through the graph’s point of view.

Approximate Suffix-Prefix Dictionary Queries

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 306, 49th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2024)

Abstract
In the all-pairs suffix-prefix (APSP) problem [Gusfield et al., Inf. Process. Lett. 1992], we are given a dictionary R of r strings, S₁,…,S_r, of total length n, and we are asked to find the length SPL_{i,j} of the longest string that is both a suffix of S_i and a prefix of S_j, for all i,j ∈ [1..r]. APSP is a classic problem in string algorithms with applications in bioinformatics, especially in sequence assembly. Since r = |R| is typically very large in real-world applications, considering all r² pairs of strings explicitly is prohibitive. This is when the data structure variant of APSP makes sense; in the same spirit as distance oracles computing shortest paths between any two vertices given online. We show how to quickly locate k-approximate matches (under the Hamming or the edit distance) in R using a version of the k-errata tree [Cole et al., STOC 2004] that we introduce. Let SPL^k_{i,j} be the length of the longest suffix of S_i that is at distance at most k from a prefix of S_j. In particular, for any k = 𝒪(1), we show an 𝒪(nlog^k n)-sized data structure to support the following queries: - One-to-One^k(i,j): output SPL^k_{i,j} in 𝒪(log^k nlog log n) time. - Report^k(i,d): output all j ∈ [1..r], such that SPL^k_{i,j} ≥ d, in 𝒪(log^{k}n(log n/log log n+output)) time, where output denotes the size of the output. In fact, our algorithms work for any value of k not just for k = 𝒪(1), but the formulas bounding the complexities get much more complicated for larger values of k.

Lower Bounds for Set-Multilinear Branching Programs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 300, 39th Computational Complexity Conference (CCC 2024)

Abstract
In this paper, we prove super-polynomial lower bounds for the model of sum of ordered set-multilinear algebraic branching programs, each with a possibly different ordering (∑smABP). Specifically, we give an explicit nd-variate polynomial of degree d such that any ∑smABP computing it must have size n^ω(1) for d as low as ω(log n). Notably, this constitutes the first such lower bound in the low degree regime. Moreover, for d = poly(n), we demonstrate an exponential lower bound. This result generalizes the seminal work of Nisan (STOC, 1991), which proved an exponential lower bound for a single ordered set-multilinear ABP. The significance of our lower bounds is underscored by the recent work of Bhargav, Dwivedi, and Saxena (TAMC, 2024), which showed that super-polynomial lower bounds against a sum of ordered set-multilinear branching programs - for a polynomial of sufficiently low degree - would imply super-polynomial lower bounds against general ABPs, thereby resolving Valiant’s longstanding conjecture that the permanent polynomial can not be computed efficiently by ABPs. More precisely, their work shows that if one could obtain such lower bounds when the degree is bounded by O(log n/ log log n), then it would imply super-polynomial lower bounds against general ABPs. Our results strengthen the works of Arvind & Raja (Chic. J. Theor. Comput. Sci., 2016) and Bhargav, Dwivedi & Saxena (TAMC, 2024), as well as the works of Ramya & Rao (Theor. Comput. Sci., 2020) and Ghoshal & Rao (International Computer Science Symposium in Russia, 2021), each of which established lower bounds for related or restricted versions of this model. They also strongly answer a question from the former two, which asked to prove super-polynomial lower bounds for general ∑smABP.

Baby PIH: Parameterized Inapproximability of Min CSP

Authors: Venkatesan Guruswami, Xuandi Ren, and Sai Sandeep

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 300, 39th Computational Complexity Conference (CCC 2024)

Abstract
The Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis (PIH) is the analog of the PCP theorem in the world of parameterized complexity. It asserts that no FPT algorithm can distinguish a satisfiable 2CSP instance from one which is only (1-ε)-satisfiable (where the parameter is the number of variables) for some constant 0 < ε < 1. We consider a minimization version of CSPs (Min-CSP), where one may assign r values to each variable, and the goal is to ensure that every constraint is satisfied by some choice among the r × r pairs of values assigned to its variables (call such a CSP instance r-list-satisfiable). We prove the following strong parameterized inapproximability for Min CSP: For every r ≥ 1, it is W[1]-hard to tell if a 2CSP instance is satisfiable or is not even r-list-satisfiable. We refer to this statement as "Baby PIH", following the recently proved Baby PCP Theorem (Barto and Kozik, 2021). Our proof adapts the combinatorial arguments underlying the Baby PCP theorem, overcoming some basic obstacles that arise in the parameterized setting. Furthermore, our reduction runs in time polynomially bounded in both the number of variables and the alphabet size, and thus implies the Baby PCP theorem as well.

3/2-Dual Approximation for CPU/GPU Scheduling

Authors: Bernhard Sebastian Germann, Klaus Jansen, Felix Ohnesorge, and Malte Tutas

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 301, 22nd International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2024)

Abstract
We present a fast and efficient 3/2 dual approximation algorithm for CPU/GPU scheduling under the objective of makespan minimization. In CPU/GPU scheduling tasks can be scheduled on two different architectures. When executed on the CPU, a task is moldable and can be assigned to multiple cores. The running time becomes a function in the assigned cores. On a GPU, the task is a classical job with a set processing time. Both settings have drawn recent independent scientific interest. For the moldable CPU scheduling, the current best known constant rate approximation is a 3/2 approximation algorithm [Wu et al. EJOR volume 306]. The best efficient algorithm for this setting is a 3/2+ε approximation [Mounie et al. SIAM '07] whereas GPU scheduling admits a 13/11 approximation [Coffman, Garey, Johnson SIAM'78]. We improve upon the current best known algorithms for CPU/GPU scheduling by Bleuse et al. by formulating a novel multidimensional multiple choice knapsack to allot tasks to either architecture and schedule them there with known algorithms. This yields an improved running time over the current state of the art. We complement our theoretical results with experimentation that shows a significant speedup by using practical optimizations and explore their efficacy.

An O(loglog n)-Approximation for Submodular Facility Location

Authors: Fateme Abbasi, Marek Adamczyk, Miguel Bosch-Calvo, Jarosław Byrka, Fabrizio Grandoni, Krzysztof Sornat, and Antoine Tinguely

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
In the Submodular Facility Location problem (SFL) we are given a collection of n clients and m facilities in a metric space. A feasible solution consists of an assignment of each client to some facility. For each client, one has to pay the distance to the associated facility. Furthermore, for each facility f to which we assign the subset of clients S^f, one has to pay the opening cost g(S^f), where g() is a monotone submodular function with g(emptyset)=0. SFL is APX-hard since it includes the classical (metric uncapacitated) Facility Location problem (with uniform facility costs) as a special case. Svitkina and Tardos [SODA'06] gave the current-best O(log n) approximation algorithm for SFL. The same authors pose the open problem whether SFL admits a constant approximation and provide such an approximation for a very restricted special case of the problem. We make some progress towards the solution of the above open problem by presenting an O(loglog n) approximation. Our approach is rather flexible and can be easily extended to generalizations and variants of SFL. In more detail, we achieve the same approximation factor for the natural generalizations of SFL where the opening cost of each facility f is of the form p_f + g(S^f) or w_f * g(S^f), where p_f, w_f >= 0 are input values. We also obtain an improved approximation algorithm for the related Universal Stochastic Facility Location problem. In this problem one is given a classical (metric) facility location instance and has to a priori assign each client to some facility. Then a subset of active clients is sampled from some given distribution, and one has to pay (a posteriori) only the connection and opening costs induced by the active clients. The expected opening cost of each facility f can be modelled with a submodular function of the set of clients assigned to f.

Parameterized Approximation For Robust Clustering in Discrete Geometric Spaces

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We consider the well-studied Robust (k,z)-Clustering problem, which generalizes the classic k-Median, k-Means, and k-Center problems and arises in the domains of robust optimization [Anthony, Goyal, Gupta, Nagarajan, Math. Oper. Res. 2010] and in algorithmic fairness [Abbasi, Bhaskara, Venkatasubramanian, 2021 & Ghadiri, Samadi, Vempala, 2022]. Given a constant z ≥ 1, the input to Robust (k,z)-Clustering is a set P of n points in a metric space (M,δ), a weight function w: P → ℝ_{≥ 0} and a positive integer k. Further, each point belongs to one (or more) of the m many different groups S_1,S_2,…,S_m ⊆ P. Our goal is to find a set X of k centers such that max_{i ∈ [m]} ∑_{p ∈ S_i} w(p) δ(p,X)^z is minimized. Complementing recent work on this problem, we give a comprehensive understanding of the parameterized approximability of the problem in geometric spaces where the parameter is the number k of centers. We prove the following results: [(i)] 1) For a universal constant η₀ > 0.0006, we devise a 3^z(1-η₀)-factor FPT approximation algorithm for Robust (k,z)-Clustering in discrete high-dimensional Euclidean spaces where the set of potential centers is finite. This shows that the lower bound of 3^z for general metrics [Goyal, Jaiswal, Inf. Proc. Letters, 2023] no longer holds when the metric has geometric structure. 2) We show that Robust (k,z)-Clustering in discrete Euclidean spaces is (√{3/2}- o(1))-hard to approximate for FPT algorithms, even if we consider the special case k-Center in logarithmic dimensions. This rules out a (1+ε)-approximation algorithm running in time f(k,ε)poly(m,n) (also called efficient parameterized approximation scheme or EPAS), giving a striking contrast with the recent EPAS for the continuous setting where centers can be placed anywhere in the space [Abbasi et al., FOCS'23]. 3) However, we obtain an EPAS for Robust (k,z)-Clustering in discrete Euclidean spaces when the dimension is sublogarithmic (for the discrete problem, earlier work [Abbasi et al., FOCS'23] provides an EPAS only in dimension o(log log n)). Our EPAS works also for metrics of sub-logarithmic doubling dimension.

Streaming Edge Coloring with Subquadratic Palette Size

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of computing an edge-coloring in the (one-pass) W-streaming model. In this setting, the edges of an n-node graph arrive in an arbitrary order to a machine with a relatively small space, and the goal is to design an algorithm that outputs, as a stream, a proper coloring of the edges using the fewest possible number of colors. Behnezhad et al. [Behnezhad et al., 2019] devised the first non-trivial algorithm for this problem, which computes in Õ(n) space a proper O(Δ²)-coloring w.h.p. (here Δ is the maximum degree of the graph). Subsequent papers improved upon this result, where latest of them [Ansari et al., 2022] showed that it is possible to deterministically compute an O(Δ²/s)-coloring in O(ns) space. However, none of the improvements succeeded in reducing the number of colors to O(Δ^{2-ε}) while keeping the same space bound of Õ(n). In particular, no progress was made on the question of whether computing an O(Δ)-coloring is possible with roughly O(n) space, which was stated in [Behnezhad et al., 2019] to be an interesting open problem. In this paper we bypass the quadratic bound by presenting a new randomized Õ(n)-space algorithm that uses Õ(Δ^{1.5}) colors.

High-Accuracy Multicommodity Flows via Iterative Refinement

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
The multicommodity flow problem is a classic problem in network flow and combinatorial optimization, with applications in transportation, communication, logistics, and supply chain management, etc. Existing algorithms often focus on low-accuracy approximate solutions, while high-accuracy algorithms typically rely on general linear program solvers. In this paper, we present efficient high-accuracy algorithms for a broad family of multicommodity flow problems on undirected graphs, demonstrating improved running times compared to general linear program solvers. Our main result shows that we can solve the 𝓁_{q, p}-norm multicommodity flow problem to a (1 + ε) approximation in time O_{q, p}(m^{1+o(1)} k² log(1/ε)), where k is the number of commodities, and O_{q, p}(⋅) hides constants depending only on q or p. As q and p approach to 1 and ∞ respectively, 𝓁_{q, p}-norm flow tends to maximum concurrent flow. We introduce the first iterative refinement framework for 𝓁_{q, p}-norm minimization problems, which reduces the problem to solving a series of decomposable residual problems. In the case of k-commodity flow, each residual problem can be decomposed into k single commodity convex flow problems, each of which can be solved in almost-linear time. As many classical variants of multicommodity flows were shown to be complete for linear programs in the high-accuracy regime [Ding-Kyng-Zhang, ICALP'22], our result provides new directions for studying more efficient high-accuracy multicommodity flow algorithms.

Simultaneously Approximating All 𝓁_p-Norms in Correlation Clustering

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
This paper considers correlation clustering on unweighted complete graphs. We give a combinatorial algorithm that returns a single clustering solution that is simultaneously O(1)-approximate for all 𝓁_p-norms of the disagreement vector; in other words, a combinatorial O(1)-approximation of the all-norms objective for correlation clustering. This is the first proof that minimal sacrifice is needed in order to optimize different norms of the disagreement vector. In addition, our algorithm is the first combinatorial approximation algorithm for the 𝓁₂-norm objective, and more generally the first combinatorial algorithm for the 𝓁_p-norm objective when 1 < p < ∞. It is also faster than all previous algorithms that minimize the 𝓁_p-norm of the disagreement vector, with run-time O(n^ω), where O(n^ω) is the time for matrix multiplication on n × n matrices. When the maximum positive degree in the graph is at most Δ, this can be improved to a run-time of O(nΔ² log n).

Parameterized Algorithms for Steiner Forest in Bounded Width Graphs

Authors: Andreas Emil Feldmann and Michael Lampis

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
In this paper we reassess the parameterized complexity and approximability of the well-studied Steiner Forest problem in several graph classes of bounded width. The problem takes an edge-weighted graph and pairs of vertices as input, and the aim is to find a minimum cost subgraph in which each given vertex pair lies in the same connected component. It is known that this problem is APX-hard in general, and NP-hard on graphs of treewidth 3, treedepth 4, and feedback vertex set size 2. However, Bateni, Hajiaghayi and Marx [JACM, 2011] gave an approximation scheme with a runtime of n^O(k²/ε) on graphs of treewidth k. Our main result is a much faster efficient parameterized approximation scheme (EPAS) with a runtime of 2^O(k²/ε log k/ε)⋅n^O(1). If k instead is the vertex cover number of the input graph, we show how to compute the optimum solution in 2^O(k log k)⋅n^O(1) time, and we also prove that this runtime dependence on k is asymptotically best possible, under ETH. Furthermore, if k is the size of a feedback edge set, then we obtain a faster 2^O(k)⋅n^O(1) time algorithm, which again cannot be improved under ETH.

A Note on Approximating Weighted Nash Social Welfare with Additive Valuations

Authors: Yuda Feng and Shi Li

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We give the first O(1)-approximation for the weighted Nash Social Welfare problem with additive valuations. The approximation ratio we obtain is e^{1/e} + ε ≈ 1.445 + ε, which matches the best known approximation ratio for the unweighted case [Barman et al., 2018]. Both our algorithm and analysis are simple. We solve a natural configuration LP for the problem, and obtain the allocation of items to agents using a randomized version of the Shmoys-Tardos rounding algorithm developed for unrelated machine scheduling problems [Shmoys and Tardos, 1993]. In the analysis, we show that the approximation ratio of the algorithm is at most the worst gap between the Nash social welfare of the optimum allocation and that of an EF1 allocation, for an unweighted Nash Social Welfare instance with identical additive valuations. This was shown to be at most e^{1/e} ≈ 1.445 by Barman et al. [Barman et al., 2018], leading to our approximation ratio.

Minimizing Tardy Processing Time on a Single Machine in Near-Linear Time

Authors: Nick Fischer and Leo Wennmann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
In this work we revisit the elementary scheduling problem 1||∑ p_j U_j. The goal is to select, among n jobs with processing times and due dates, a subset of jobs with maximum total processing time that can be scheduled in sequence without violating their due dates. This problem is NP-hard, but a classical algorithm by Lawler and Moore from the 60s solves this problem in pseudo-polynomial time O(nP), where P is the total processing time of all jobs. With the aim to develop best-possible pseudo-polynomial-time algorithms, a recent wave of results has improved Lawler and Moore’s algorithm for 1||∑ p_j U_j: First to time Õ(P^{7/4}) [Bringmann, Fischer, Hermelin, Shabtay, Wellnitz; ICALP'20], then to time Õ(P^{5/3}) [Klein, Polak, Rohwedder; SODA'23], and finally to time Õ(P^{7/5}) [Schieber, Sitaraman; WADS'23]. It remained an exciting open question whether these works can be improved further. In this work we develop an algorithm in near-linear time Õ(P) for the 1||∑ p_j U_j problem. This running time not only significantly improves upon the previous results, but also matches conditional lower bounds based on the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis or the Set Cover Hypothesis and is therefore likely optimal (up to subpolynomial factors). Our new algorithm also extends to the case of m machines in time Õ(P^m). In contrast to the previous improvements, we take a different, more direct approach inspired by the recent reductions from Modular Subset Sum to dynamic string problems. We thereby arrive at a satisfyingly simple algorithm.

Streaming Algorithms for Connectivity Augmentation

Authors: Ce Jin, Michael Kapralov, Sepideh Mahabadi, and Ali Vakilian

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
We study the k-connectivity augmentation problem (k-CAP) in the single-pass streaming model. Given a (k-1)-edge connected graph G = (V,E) that is stored in memory, and a stream of weighted edges (also called links) L with weights in {0,1,… ,W}, the goal is to choose a minimum weight subset L' ⊆ L of the links such that G' = (V,E∪ L') is k-edge connected. We give a (2+ε)-approximation algorithm for this problem which requires to store O(ε^{-1} nlog n) words. Moreover, we show the tightness of our result: Any algorithm with better than 2-approximation for the problem requires Ω(n²) bits of space even when k = 2. This establishes a gap between the optimal approximation factor one can obtain in the streaming vs the offline setting for k-CAP. We further consider a natural generalization to the fully streaming model where both E and L arrive in the stream in an arbitrary order. We show that this problem has a space lower bound that matches the best possible size of a spanner of the same approximation ratio. Following this, we give improved results for spanners on weighted graphs: We show a streaming algorithm that finds a (2t-1+ε)-approximate weighted spanner of size at most O(ε^{-1} n^{1+1/t}log n) for integer t, whereas the best prior streaming algorithm for spanner on weighted graphs had size depending on log W. We believe that this result is of independent interest. Using our spanner result, we provide an optimal O(t)-approximation for k-CAP in the fully streaming model with O(nk + n^{1+1/t}) words of space. Finally we apply our results to network design problems such as Steiner tree augmentation problem (STAP), k-edge connected spanning subgraph (k-ECSS) and the general Survivable Network Design problem (SNDP). In particular, we show a single-pass O(tlog k)-approximation for SNDP using O(kn^{1+1/t}) words of space, where k is the maximum connectivity requirement.
