Unreliability in Practical Subclasses of Communicating Systems

Abstract
Systems of communicating automata are prominent models for peer-to-peer message-passing over unbounded channels, but in the general scenario, most verification properties are undecidable. To address this issue, two decidable subclasses, Realisable with Synchronous Communication (RSC) and k-Multiparty Compatibility (k-MC), were proposed in the literature, with corresponding verification tools developed and applied in practice. Unfortunately, both RSC and k-MC are not resilient under failures: (1) their decidability relies on the assumption of perfect channels and (2) most standard protocols do not satisfy RSC or k-MC under failures. To address these limitations, this paper studies the resilience of RSC and k-MC under two distinct failure models: interference and crash-stop failures. For interference, we relax the conditions of RSC and k-MC and prove that the inclusions of these relaxed properties remain decidable under interference, preserving their known complexity bounds. We then propose a novel crash-handling communicating system that captures wider behaviours than existing multiparty session types (MPST) with crash-stop failures. We study a translation of MPST with crash-stop failures into this system integrating RSC and k-MC properties, and establish their decidability results. Finally, by verifying representative protocols from the literature using RSC and k-MC tools extended to interferences, we evaluate the relaxed systems and demonstrate their resilience.

IsaBIL: A Framework for Verifying (In)correctness of Binaries in Isabelle/HOL

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
This paper presents IsaBIL, a binary analysis framework in Isabelle/HOL that is based on the widely used Binary Analysis Platform (BAP). Specifically, in IsaBIL, we formalise BAP’s intermediate language, called BIL and integrate it with Hoare logic (to enable proofs of correctness) as well as incorrectness logic (to enable proofs of incorrectness). IsaBIL inherits the full flexibility of BAP, allowing us to verify binaries for a wide range of languages (C, C++, Rust), toolchains (LLVM, Ghidra) and target architectures (x86, RISC-V), and can also be used when the source code for a binary is unavailable. To make verification tractable, we develop a number of big-step rules that combine BIL’s existing small-step rules at different levels of abstraction to support reuse. We develop high-level reasoning rules for RISC-V instructions (our main target architecture) to further optimise verification. Additionally, we develop Isabelle proof tactics that exploit common patterns in C binaries for RISC-V to discharge large numbers of proof goals (often in the 100s) automatically. IsaBIL includes an Isabelle/ML based parser for BIL programs, allowing one to automatically generate the associated Isabelle/HOL program locale from a BAP output. Taken together, IsaBIL provides a highly flexible proof environment for program binaries. As examples, we prove correctness of key examples from the Joint Strike Fighter coding standards and the MITRE database.

Sub-classical Boolean Bunched Logics and the Meaning of Par

Authors: James Brotherston and Jules Villard

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 41, 24th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2015)

Abstract
We investigate intermediate logics between the bunched logics Boolean BI and Classical BI, obtained by combining classical propositional logic with various flavours of Hyland and De Paiva's full intuitionistic linear logic. Thus, in addition to the usual multiplicative conjunction (with its adjoint implication and unit), our logics also feature a multiplicative disjunction (with its adjoint co-implication and unit). The multiplicatives behave "sub-classically", in that disjunction and conjunction are related by a weak distribution principle, rather than by De Morgan equivalence. We formulate a Kripke semantics, covering all our sub-classical bunched logics, in which the multiplicatives are naturally read in terms of resource operations. Our main theoretical result is that validity according to this semantics coincides with provability in a corresponding Hilbert-style proof system. Our logical investigation sheds considerable new light on how one can understand the multiplicative disjunction, better known as linear logic's "par", in terms of resource operations. In particular, and in contrast to the earlier Classical BI, the models of our logics include the heap-like memory models of separation logic, in which disjunction can be interpreted as a property of intersection operations over heaps.
