Abstract
A Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner for a point set P ⊂ ℝ² is a planar straight-line graph that, for any two points a, b ∈ P, contains a path whose length is at most 1+ε times the Euclidean distance between a and b. We construct a Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner with O(n/ε^{3/2}) edges for any set of n points in the plane. This result improves upon the previous best upper bound of O(n/ε⁴) obtained nearly three decades ago. We also establish an almost matching lower bound: There exist n points in the plane for which any Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner has Ω_μ(n/ε^{3/2-μ}) edges for any μ > 0. Our lower bound uses recent generalizations of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem to disk-tube incidences in geometric measure theory.

Efficiency of Learned Indexes on Genome Spectra

Authors: Md. Hasin Abrar, Paul Medvedev, and Giorgio Vinciguerra

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Data structures on a multiset of genomic k-mers are at the heart of many bioinformatic tools. As genomic datasets grow in scale, the efficiency of these data structures increasingly depends on how well they leverage the inherent patterns in the data. One recent and effective approach is the use of learned indexes that approximate the rank function of a multiset using a piecewise linear function with very few segments. However, theoretical worst-case analysis struggles to predict the practical performance of these indexes. We address this limitation by developing a novel measure of piecewise-linear approximability of the data, called CaPLa (Canonical Piecewise Linear approximability). CaPLa builds on the empirical observation that a power-law model often serves as a reasonable proxy for piecewise linear-approximability, while explicitly accounting for deviations from a true power-law fit. We prove basic properties of CaPLa and present an efficient algorithm to compute it. We then demonstrate that CaPLa can accurately predict space bounds for data structures on real data. Empirically, we analyze over 500 genomes through the lens of CaPLa, revealing that it varies widely across the tree of life and even within individual genomes. Finally, we study the robustness of CaPLa as a measure and the factors that make genomic k-mer multisets different from random ones.

Learning Shorter Redundant Clauses in SDCL Using MaxSAT

Authors: Albert Oliveras, Chunxiao Li, Darryl Wu, Jonathan Chung, and Vijay Ganesh

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 271, 26th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing (SAT 2023)

Abstract
In this paper we present the design and implementation of a Satisfaction-Driven Clause Learning (SDCL) SAT solver, MapleSDCL, which uses a MaxSAT-based technique that enables it to learn shorter, and hence better, redundant clauses. We also perform a thorough empirical evaluation of our method and show that our SDCL solver solves Mutilated Chess Board (MCB) problems significantly faster than CDCL solvers, without requiring any alteration to the branching heuristic used by the underlying CDCL SAT solver.
