A Framework for Fostering Easier Access to Enriched Textual Information

Abstract
Considering the amount of information in unstructured data it is necessary to have suitable methods to extract information from it. Most of these methods have their own output making it difficult and costly to merge and share this information as there currently is no unified way of representing this information. While most of these methods rely on JSON or XML there has been a push to serialize these into RDF compliant formats due to their flexiblity and the existing ecosystem surrounding them. In this paper we introduce a framework whose goal is to provide a serialization of enriched data into an RDF format, following FAIR principles, making it more interpretable, interoperable and shareable. We process a subset of the WikiNER dataset and showcase two examples of using this framework: One using CoNLL annotations and the other by performing entity-linking on an already existing graph. The results are a graph with every connection starting from the document and finishing on tokens while keeping the original text intact while embedding the enriched data into it, in this case the CoNLL annotations and Entities.

Introductory Programming in Higher Education: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract
A systematic literature review was performed on 33 papers obtained from the ACM, IEEE and Sciencedirect databases, in order to understand in depth, the introductory programming discipline (CS1) in higher education. Recently published works have been covered, providing an overview of the teaching-learning process of introductory programming and enabling to find out whether the research developed by universities worldwide is in line with the proposals made by ACM/IEEE-CS group for computer courses, regarding the transition to the competency-based model. The results show that the new techniques/technologies currently used in software development, as an example of agile methodology, has influenced the teaching-learning process of CS1 together with methods such as visual programming and e-learning. The analyzed papers discuss the importance of developing not only technical, but also social skills, corroborating that methodologies used in introductory programming courses need to focus on preparing students for an increasingly competitive market, associating new skills with technical aspects.

Use of Automatic Code Assessment Tools in the Programming Teaching Process

Abstract
The teaching of programming process is essential to prepare students for the development of computer applications and software solutions. During the last decade, a variety of tools facilitating automatic validation of programming code have been developed. In this context, authors start to analyze and studying some tools with this potential and a possible use with pedagogical purposes. For the last three years a study has been carried out related with the implementation of VPL (Virtual Programming Lab) a plug-in developed specifically for Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) on a Java-based programming discipline during the Informatics Engineering degree of the Informatics Engineering Department (DEI) from the School of Engineering of Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ISEP/P.PORTO). This paper will present how VPL was introduced and some results of this experiment before the implementation in the learning process of another tool (Mooshak) as a real-time automatic code evaluation. These tools allow to edit and execute programs, in a large range of languages, and enables automatic assessment and prompt feedback.

Towards European Portuguese Conversational Assistants for Smart Homes

Abstract
Nowadays, smart environments, such as Smart Homes, are becoming a reality, due to the access to a wide variety of smart devices at a low cost. These devices are connected to the home network and inhabitants can interact with them using smartphones, tablets and smart assistants, a feature with rising popularity. The diversity of devices, the user’s expectations regarding Smart Homes, and assistants' requirements pose several challenges. In this context, a Smart Home Assistant capable of conversation and device integration can be a valuable help to the inhabitants, not only for smart device control, but also to obtain valuable information and have a broader picture of how the house and its devices behave. This paper presents the current stage of development of one such assistant, targeting European Portuguese, not only supporting the control of home devices, but also providing a potentially more natural way to access a variety of information regarding the home and its devices. The development has been made in the scope of Smart Green Homes (SGH) project.

Anti-Powers in Infinite Words

Abstract
In combinatorics of words, a concatenation of k consecutive equal blocks is called a power of order k. In this paper we take a different point of view and define an anti-power of order k as a concatenation of k consecutive pairwise distinct blocks of the same length. As a main result, we show that every infinite word contains powers of any order or anti-powers of any order. That is, the existence of powers or anti-powers is an unavoidable regularity. Indeed, we prove a stronger result, which relates the density of anti-powers to the existence of a factor that occurs with arbitrary exponent. From these results, we derive that at every position of an aperiodic uniformly recurrent word start anti-powers of any order. We further show that any infinite word avoiding anti-powers of order 3 is ultimately periodic, and that there exist aperiodic words avoiding anti-powers of order 4. We also show that there exist aperiodic recurrent words avoiding anti-powers of order 6, and leave open the question whether there exist aperiodic recurrent words avoiding anti-powers of order k for k=4,5.

Representing Temporal Patterns in Computer-Interpretable Clinical Guidelines

Abstract
Computer-Interpretable Guidelines (CIGs) as machine-readable versions of clinical protocols have to provide appropriate constructs for the representation of different aspects of medical knowledge, namely administrative information, workflows of procedures, clinical constraints and temporal constraints. This work focuses on the latter, by aiming to develop a comprehensive representation of temporal constraints for machine readable formats of clinical protocols and provide a proper execution engine that deals with different time patterns and constraints placed on them. A model for the representation of time is presented for the CompGuide ontology in Ontology Web language (OWL) along with a comparison with the available formalisms in this field.
