On the Computational Cost of Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
Over a decade, numerous Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models have been designed and evaluated on reference datasets, always with increasing performance. In this paper, we re-evaluate these models with respect to their computational efficiency during training, by estimating the computational cost of the procedure expressed in floating-point operations. We design a cost model based on analytical expressions and apply it on a collection of 20 KGE models, representative of the state-of-the-art. We show that dimensionality or parameter efficiency, used in the literature to compare models with each other, are not suitable to evaluate the true cost of models. Through fixed-budget experiments, a novel approach to evaluate KGE models based on cost estimates, we re-assess the relative performance of model families compared to the state-of-the-art. Bilinear models such as ComplEx underperform with a low computational budget while hyperbolic linear models appear to offer no particular benefit compared to simpler Euclidian models, especially the MuRE model. Neural models, such as ConvE or CompGCN, achieve reasonable performance in the literature but their high computational cost appears unnecessary when compared with other models. The trade-off between efficiency and expressivity of both linear and neural models is to be further explored.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

Enriching Location Representation with Detailed Semantic Information

Abstract
Spatial representations that capture both structural and semantic characteristics of urban environments are essential for urban modeling. Traditional spatial embeddings often prioritize spatial proximity while underutilizing fine-grained contextual information from places. To address this limitation, we introduce CaLLiPer+, an extension of the CaLLiPer model that systematically integrates Point-of-Interest (POI) names alongside categorical labels within a multimodal contrastive learning framework. We evaluate its effectiveness on two downstream tasks - land use classification and socioeconomic status distribution mapping - demonstrating consistent performance gains of 4% to 11% over baseline methods. Additionally, we show that incorporating POI names enhances location retrieval, enabling models to capture complex urban concepts with greater precision. Ablation studies further reveal the complementary role of POI names and the advantages of leveraging pretrained text encoders for spatial representations. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of integrating fine-grained semantic attributes and multimodal learning techniques to advance the development of urban foundation models.

Chain of Grounded Objectives: Concise Goal-Oriented Prompting for Code Generation

Abstract
The use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for code generation has gained significant attention in recent years. Existing methods often aim to improve the quality of generated code by incorporating additional contextual information or guidance into input prompts. Many of these approaches adopt process-oriented reasoning strategies, mimicking human-like step-by-step thinking; however, they may not always align with the structured nature of programming languages. This paper introduces Chain of Grounded Objectives (CGO), a concise goal-oriented prompting approach that embeds functional objectives into prompts to enhance code generation. By focusing on precisely defined objectives rather than explicit procedural steps, CGO aligns more naturally with programming tasks while retaining flexibility. Empirical evaluations on HumanEval, MBPP, their extended versions, and LiveCodeBench show that CGO achieves accuracy comparable to or better than existing methods while using fewer tokens, making it a more efficient approach to LLM-based code generation.

Infinitely Divisible Noise for Differential Privacy: Nearly Optimal Error in the High ε Regime

Abstract
Differential privacy (DP) can be achieved in a distributed manner, where multiple parties add independent noise such that their sum protects the overall dataset with DP. A common technique here is for each party to sample their noise from the decomposition of an infinitely divisible distribution. We analyze two mechanisms in this setting: 1) the generalized discrete Laplace (GDL) mechanism, whose distribution (which is closed under summation) follows from differences of i.i.d. negative binomial shares, and 2) the multi-scale discrete Laplace (MSDLap) mechanism, a novel mechanism following the sum of multiple i.i.d. discrete Laplace shares at different scales. For ε ≥ 1, our mechanisms can be parameterized to have O(Δ³ e^{-ε}) and O(min(Δ³ e^{-ε}, Δ² e^{-2ε/3})) MSE, respectively, where Δ denote the sensitivity; the latter bound matches known optimality results. Furthermore, the MSDLap mechanism has the optimal MSE including constants as ε → ∞. We also show a transformation from the discrete setting to the continuous setting, which allows us to transform both mechanisms to the continuous setting and thereby achieve the optimal O(Δ² e^{-2ε / 3}) MSE. To our knowledge, these are the first infinitely divisible additive noise mechanisms that achieve order-optimal MSE under pure DP for either the discrete or continuous setting, so our work shows formally there is no separation in utility when query-independent noise adding mechanisms are restricted to infinitely divisible noise. For the continuous setting, our result improves upon Pagh and Stausholm’s Arete distribution which gives an MSE of O(Δ² e^{-ε/4}) [Pagh and Stausholm, 2022]. Furthermore, we give an exact sampler tuned to efficiently implement the MSDLap mechanism, and we apply our results to improve a state of the art multi-message shuffle DP protocol from [Balle et al., 2020] in the high ε regime.

Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken Knowledge Representation - and the world - by storm. This inflection point marks a shift from explicit knowledge representation to a renewed focus on the hybrid representation of both explicit knowledge and parametric knowledge. In this position paper, we will discuss some of the common debate points within the community on LLMs (parametric knowledge) and Knowledge Graphs (explicit knowledge) and speculate on opportunities and visions that the renewed focus brings, as well as related research topics and challenges.

Knowledge Engineering Using Large Language Models

Abstract
Knowledge engineering is a discipline that focuses on the creation and maintenance of processes that generate and apply knowledge. Traditionally, knowledge engineering approaches have focused on knowledge expressed in formal languages. The emergence of large language models and their capabilities to effectively work with natural language, in its broadest sense, raises questions about the foundations and practice of knowledge engineering. Here, we outline the potential role of LLMs in knowledge engineering, identifying two central directions: 1) creating hybrid neuro-symbolic knowledge systems; and 2) enabling knowledge engineering in natural language. Additionally, we formulate key open research questions to tackle these directions.

On the Expansion of Group-Based Lifts

Abstract
A k-lift of an n-vertex base graph G is a graph H on nxk vertices, where each vertex v of G is replaced by k vertices v_1,...,v_k and each edge uv in G is replaced by a matching representing a bijection pi_{uv} so that the edges of H are of the form (u_i,v_{pi_{uv}(i)}). Lifts have been investigated as a means to efficiently construct expanders. In this work, we study lifts obtained from groups and group actions. We derive the spectrum of such lifts via the representation theory principles of the underlying group. Our main results are: 1. A uniform random lift by a cyclic group of order k of any n-vertex d-regular base graph G, with the nontrivial eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of G bounded by lambda in magnitude, has the new nontrivial eigenvalues bounded by lambda+O(sqrt{d}) in magnitude with probability 1-ke^{-Omega(n/d^2)}. The probability bounds as well as the dependency on lambda are almost optimal. As a special case, we obtain that there is a constant c_1 such that for every k<=2^{c_1n/d^2}, there exists a lift H of every Ramanujan graph by a cyclic group of order k such that H is almost Ramanujan (nontrivial eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix at most O(sqrt{d}) in magnitude). We also show how this result leads to a quasi-polynomial time deterministic algorithm to construct almost Ramanujan expanders. 2. There is a constant c_2 such that for every k>=2^{c_2nd}, there does not exist an abelian k-lift H of any n-vertex d-regular base graph such that H is almost Ramanujan. This can be viewed as an analogue of the well-known no-expansion result for constant degree abelian Cayley graphs. Suppose k_0 is the order of the largest abelian group that produces expanding lifts. Our two results highlight lower and upper bounds on k_0 that are tight upto a factor of d^3 in the exponent, thus suggesting a threshold phenomenon.
