Isabelle/EVM: A Novel Formalization of the EVM in Isabelle/HOL

Authors: Ashley Card and Diego Marmsoler

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 142, 7th International Workshop on Formal Methods for Blockchains (FMBC 2026)

Abstract
Smart contracts deployed on the Ethereum blockchain execute on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and handle financial operations such as payments, asset transfers, and auctions. Given the high value they control, correctness in these contracts is critical, as errors and vulnerabilities have led to losses totalling hundreds of millions of dollars. To address this problem, we develop a novel formalization of the EVM. Compared to existing formalizations, our formalization is in Isabelle/HOL, covers all current EVM opcodes, and formalizes cross-contract execution. Thus, it allows us to express properties which are out of scope for other formalizations. To allow for the execution of our formalization, we implement a code generator, allowing it to be exported as a stand-alone Haskell program. We then validate the semantics by executing νmprint{25000} test cases from the official Ethereum test suite. Our formalization can be used to verify concrete smart contracts but also to reason about the correctness of tools and techniques which manipulate bytecode, such as compilers or optimizers.

GradSTL: Comprehensive Signal Temporal Logic for Neurosymbolic Reasoning and Learning

Authors: Mark Chevallier, Filip Smola, Richard Schmoetten, and Jacques D. Fleuriot

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 355, 32nd International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2025)

Abstract
We present GradSTL, the first fully comprehensive implementation of signal temporal logic (STL) suitable for integration with neurosymbolic learning. In particular, GradSTL can successfully evaluate any STL constraint over any signal, regardless of how it is sampled. Our formally verified approach specifies smooth STL semantics over tensors, with formal proofs of soundness and of correctness of its derivative function. Our implementation is generated automatically from this formalisation, without manual coding, guaranteeing correctness by construction. We show via a case study that using our implementation, a neurosymbolic process learns to satisfy a pre-specified STL constraint. Our approach offers a highly rigorous foundation for integrating signal temporal logic and learning by gradient descent.

Verifying an Efficient Algorithm for Computing Bernoulli Numbers

Authors: Manuel Eberl and Peter Lammich

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
The Bernoulli numbers B_k are a sequence of rational numbers that is ubiquitous in mathematics, but difficult to compute efficiently (compared to e.g. approximating π). In 2008, Harvey gave the currently fastest known practical way for computing them: his algorithm computes B_k mod p in time O(p log^{1 + o(1)} p). By doing this for O(k) many small primes p in parallel and then combining the results with the Chinese Remainder Theorem, one recovers the value of B_k as a rational number in O(k² log^{2 + o(1)} k) time. One advantage of this approach is that the expensive part of the algorithm is highly parallelisable and has very low memory requirements. This algorithm still holds the world record with its computation of B_{10⁸}. We give a verified efficient LLVM implementation of this algorithm. This was achieved by formalising the necessary mathematical background theory in Isabelle/HOL, proving an abstract version of the algorithm correct, and refining this abstract version down to LLVM using Lammich’s Isabelle-LLVM framework, including many low-level optimisations. The performance of the resulting LLVM code is comparable with Harvey’s original unverified and hand-optimised C++ implementation.

Sledgehammering Without ATPs (Short Paper)

Authors: Martin Desharnais and Jasmin Blanchette

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
We describe an alternative architecture for "hammers," inspired by Magnushammer, in which proofs are found by the proof assistant’s built-in automation instead of by external automatic theorem provers (ATPs). We implemented this approach in Isabelle’s Sledgehammer and evaluated it. The new ATP-free approach nicely complements the traditional Sledgehammer. The two approaches in combination solve more goals than the traditional ATP-based approach alone.

Smart test data generators via logic programming

Authors: Lukas Bulwahn

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 11, Technical Communications of the 27th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP'11) (2011)

Abstract
We present a novel counterexample generator for the interactive theorem prover Isabelle based on a compiler that synthesizes test data generators for functional programming languages (e.g. Standard ML, OCaml) from specifications in Isabelle. In contrast to naive type-based test data generators, the smart generators take the preconditions into account and only generate tests that fulfill the preconditions. The smart generators are constructed by a compiler that reformulates the preconditions as logic programs and analyzes them by an enriched mode inference. From this inference, the compiler can construct the desired generators in the functional programming language. These test data generators are applied to find errors in specifications, as we show in a case study of a hotel key card system.
