Abstract
We extend the existing HOL Light Library for Modal Systems (HOLMS) to support a modular implementation of modal reasoning within the HOL Light proof assistant. We deeply embed axiomatic calculi and relational semantics for seven normal modal logics (K, T, B, K4, S4, S5, GL) and formalise modal adequacy theorems for these systems. We then leverage those formalisations to implement a mechanism for automated reasoning via proof-search in the associated labelled sequent calculi, which we shallowly embed in HOL Light’s goal-stack mechanism. This way, we equip the general-purpose proof assistant with (semi)decision procedures for these logics that, in case of failure to construct a proof for the input formula, return a certified countermodel within the appropriate class for the logic under consideration. On the methodological side, we propose a precise measure of the modularity of our approach by systematically adopting Christopher Strachey’s distinction between ad hoc and parametric polymorphism throughout the library.

Pareto Fronts for Compositionally Solving String Diagrams of Parity Games

Authors: Kazuki Watanabe

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 342, 11th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2025)

Abstract
Open parity games are proposed as a compositional extension of parity games with algebraic operations, forming string diagrams of parity games. A potential application of string diagrams of parity games is to describe a large parity game with a given compositional structure and solve it efficiently as a divide-and-conquer algorithm by exploiting its compositional structure. Building on our recent progress in open Markov decision processes, we introduce Pareto fronts of open parity games, offering a framework for multi-objective solutions. We establish the positional determinacy of open parity games with respect to their Pareto fronts through a novel translation method. Our translation converts an open parity game into a parity game tailored to a given single-objective. Furthermore, we present a simple algorithm for solving open parity games, derived from this translation that allows the application of existing efficient algorithms for parity games. Expanding on this foundation, we develop a compositional algorithm for string diagrams of parity games.

Custom Hypergraph Categories via Generalized Relations

Authors: Dan Marsden and Fabrizio Genovese

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 72, 7th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2017)

Abstract
Process theories combine a graphical language for compositional reasoning with an underlying categorical semantics. They have been successfully applied to fields such as quantum computation, natural language processing, linear dynamical systems and network theory. When investigating a new application, the question arises of how to identify a suitable process theoretic model. We present a conceptually motivated parameterized framework for the construction of models for process theories. Our framework generalizes the notion of binary relation along four axes of variation, the truth values, a choice of algebraic structure, the ambient mathematical universe and the choice of proof relevance or provability. The resulting categories are preorder-enriched and provide analogues of relational converse and taking graphs of maps. Our constructions are functorial in the parameter choices, establishing mathematical connections between different application domains. We illustrate our techniques by constructing many existing models from the literature, and new models that open up ground for further development.
