Edge-AI: Identifying Key Enablers in Edge Intelligence (Dagstuhl Seminar 23432)

Authors: Aaron Ding, Eyal de Lara, Schahram Dustdar, Ella Peltonen, and Tobias Meuser

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 13, Issue 10 (2024)

Abstract
Edge computing promises to decentralize cloud applications while providing more bandwidth and reducing latency. Based on the discussion of our first Dagstuhl Seminar and the continuation work that took place after the seminar, we continued our work on identified challenges that need to be further addressed within the community. These challenges included 1) large-scale deployment of the edge-cloud continuum, 2) energy optimization and sustainability of such large-scale AI/ML learning and modelling, and 3) trustworthiness, security, and ethical questions related to the whole continuum. In this seminar, we discussed the current state of Edge Intelligence and shaped a holistic view of its challenges and applications. The main concerns were 1) the assessment and applicability of Edge Intelligence solutions, 2) energy consumption and sustainability, and 3) the new trend of Large-Language Models.

Abstract
The goal of this roadmap paper is to summarize the state of-the-art and identify research challenges when developing, deploying and managing self-adaptive software systems. Instead of dealing with a wide range of topics associated with the field, we focus on four essential topics of self-adaptation: design space for adaptive solutions, processes, from centralized to decentralized control, and practical run-time verification and validation. For each topic, we present an overview, suggest future directions, and focus on selected challenges. This paper complements and extends a previous roadmap on software engineering for self-adaptive systems published in 2009 covering a different set of topics, and reflecting in part on the previous paper. This roadmap is one of the many results of the Dagstuhl Seminar 10431 on Software Engineering for Self-Adaptive Systems, which took place in October 2010.

Abstract
Software's ability to adapt at run-time to changing user needs, system intrusions or faults, changing operational environment, and resource variability has been proposed as a means to cope with the complexity of today's software-intensive systems. Such self-adaptive systems can configure and reconfigure themselves, augment their functionality, continually optimize themselves, protect themselves, and recover themselves, while keeping most of their complexity hidden from the user and administrator. In this paper, we present research road map for software engineering of self-adaptive systems focusing on four views, which we identify as essential: requirements, modelling, engineering, and assurances.

Model-Driven and Pattern-Based Integration of Process-Driven SOA Models

Authors: Uwe Zdun and Schahram Dustdar

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 6291, The Role of Business Processes in Service Oriented Architectures (2006)

Abstract
Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are increasingly used in the context of business processes. However, the modeling approaches for process-driven SOAs do not yet sufficiently integrate the various kinds of models relevant for a process-driven SOA – ranging from process models to software architectural models to software design models. We propose to integrate process-driven SOA models via a model-driven software development approach that is based on proven practices documented as software patterns. We introduce pattern primitives as an intermediate abstraction to formally model the participants in the solutions that patterns convey. To enable model-driven development, we develop domain-specific modeling languages for each kind of process-driven SOA model - based on formal meta-models that are extended with the pattern primitives. The various process-driven SOA models are integrated in a model-driven tool chain via the meta-models. Our tool chain validates the process-driven SOA models with regard to the constraints given by the meta-models and primitives.

05462 Service-Oriented Computing: A Research Roadmap

Authors: Michael P. Papazoglou, Paolo Traverso, Schahram Dustdar, Frank Leymann, and Bernd J. Krämer

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 5462, Service Oriented Computing (SOC) (2006)

Abstract
This document presents a Services Research Roadmap that launches four pivotal, inherently related, research themes to Service-Oriented Computing (SOC): service foundations, service composition, service management and monitoring and service-oriented engineering. Each theme is introduced briefly from a technology, state of the art and scientific challenges standpoint. From the technology standpoint a comprehensive review of state of the art, standards, and current research activities in each key area is provided. From the state of the art the major open problems and bottlenecks to progress are identified. During the during seminar each core theme was initially introduced by a leading expert in the field who described the state of the art and highlighting open problems and important research topics for the SOC community to work on in the future. These experts were then asked to coordinate parallel workgroups that were entrusted with an in-depth analysis of the research opportunities and needs in the respective theme. The findings presented in this summary report build on the advice of those panels of experts from industry and academia who participated in this Dagstuhl Seminar and met at other occasions during the past three years, e.g., at the International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC, see www.icsoc.org). These experts represent many disciplines including distributed computing, database and information systems, software engineering, computer architectures and middleware and knowledge representation.
