Termination of Generalized Term Rewriting Systems

Abstract
We investigate termination of Generalized Term Rewriting Systems (GTRS), which extend Conditional Term Rewriting Systems by considering replacement restrictions on selected arguments of function symbols, as in Context-Sensitive Rewriting, and conditional rewriting rules whose conditional part may include not only a mix of the usual (reachability, joinability,...) conditions, but also atoms defined by a set of definite Horn clauses. GTRS can be used to prove confluence and termination of Generalized Rewrite Theories and Maude programs. We have characterized confluence of terminating GTRS as the joinability of a finite set of conditional pairs. Since termination of GTRS is underexplored to date, this paper introduces a Dependency Pair Framework which is well-suited to automatically (dis)prove termination of GTRS.

Confluence of Conditional Rewriting Modulo

Authors: Salvador Lucas

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 288, 32nd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2024)

Abstract
We investigate confluence of rewriting with Equational Generalized Term Rewriting Systems R, consisting of Horn clauses, some of them defining conditional equations s = t ⇐ c and rewriting rules 𝓁 → r ⇐ c. In both cases, c is a sequence of atoms, possibly defined by using additional Horn clauses. Such systems include Equational Term Rewriting Systems and (join, oriented, and semi-equational) Conditional Term Rewriting Systems. A set of equations E defines an equivalence =_E and quotient set T(F,X)/=_E of terms, where reductions s →_{R/E}t using rules in R occur. For such systems, we obtain a finite set of conditional pairs π, which can be viewed as logical sentences, to prove and disprove confluence of →_{R/E} by (dis)proving joinability of such conditional pairs π.

Confluence of Conditional Rewriting in Logic Form

Authors: Raúl Gutiérrez, Salvador Lucas, and Miguel Vítores

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 213, 41st IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2021)

Abstract
We characterize conditional rewriting as satisfiability in a Herbrand-like model of terms where variables are also included as fresh constant symbols extending the original signature. Confluence of conditional rewriting and joinability of conditional critical pairs is characterized similarly. Joinability of critical pairs is then translated into combinations of (in)feasibility problems which can be efficiently handled by a number of automatic tools. This permits a more efficient use of standard results for proving confluence of conditional term rewriting systems, most of them relying on auxiliary proofs of joinability of conditional critical pairs, perhaps with additional syntactical and (operational) termination requirements on the system. Our approach has been implemented in a new system: CONFident . Its ability to (dis)prove confluence of conditional term rewriting systems is witnessed by means of some benchmarks comparing our tool with existing tools for similar purposes.
