Movement in Low Gravity (MoLo) – LUNA: Biomechanical Modelling to Mitigate Lunar Surface Operation Risks

Abstract
The Artemis programme seeks to develop and test concepts, hardware and approaches to support long term habitation of the Lunar surface, and future missions to Mars. In preparation for the Artemis missions determination of tasks to be performed, the functional requirements of such tasks and as mission duration extends whether physiological deconditioning becomes functionally significant, compromising the crew member’s ability to perform critical tasks on the surface, and/or upon return to earth [MoLo-LUNA – leveraging the Molo programme (and several other activities) - could become a key supporting activity for LUNA incl. validation of the Puppeteer offloading system itself via creation of a complementary MoLo-LUNA-LAB. Furthermore, the MoLo-LUNA programme could become a key facilitator of simulator suit instrumentation/definition, broader astronaut training activities and mission architecture development – including Artemis mission simulations. By employing a Puppeteer system external to the LUNA chamber hall it will optimise utilisation and cost-effectiveness of LUNA, and as such represents a critical service to future LUNA stakeholders. Furthermore, MoLo-LUNA would generate a unique data set that can be leveraged to predict de-conditioning on the Lunar surface - and thereby optimise functionality, and minimise mission risk – including informing the need for, and prescription of exercise countermeasures on the Lunar Surface and in transit. Thus, MoLo-LUNA offers a unique opportunity to place LUNA, and ESA as a key ongoing provider of evidence to define, optimise and support crew Artemis surface missions.

Optimizing 2D Cutting: A Bin Packing Approach to Minimize Scraps and Maximize Their Reusability

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 340, 31st International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2025)

Abstract
In industrial settings, cutting predefined pieces from one or multiple sheets of material is a common optimization challenge. This problem can be formulated as a variant of the 2D bin packing problem, where the edges of the pieces define the cut lines. This paper presents a constraint programming model developed in collaboration with an industrial partner in construction to minimize scrap waste generated when cutting insulation pieces. The model introduces an objective function designed to maximize the reusability of leftover material. To fully leverage the model’s efficiency, an initial process transforms irregular insulation pieces into rectangles using one of four processing methods. A comparative analysis is conducted to evaluate the impact of these methods, as well as to benchmark the model’s results against the partner’s manual approach.

Train Scheduling and Rescheduling in the UK with a Modified Shifting Bottleneck Procedure

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 25, 12th Workshop on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (2012)

Abstract
This paper introduces a modified shifting bottleneck approach to solve train scheduling and rescheduling problems. The problem is formulated as a job shop scheduling model and a mixed integer linear programming model is also presented. The shifting bottleneck procedure is a well-established heuristic method for obtaining solutions to the job shop and other machine scheduling problems. We modify the classical shifting bottleneck approach to make it suitable for the types of job shop problem that arises in train scheduling. The method decomposes the problem into several single machine problems. Different variations of the method are considered with regard to solving the single machine problems. We compare and report the performance of the algorithms for a case study based on part of the UK railway network.
