A Demigod’s Number for the Rubik’s Cube

Authors: Arturo Merino and Bernardo Subercaseaux

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 366, 13th International Conference on Fun with Algorithms (FUN 2026)

Abstract
It is by now well-known that any state of the 3× 3 × 3 Rubik’s Cube can be solved in at most 20 moves, a result often referred to as "God’s Number". However, this result took Rokicki et al. around 35 CPU years to prove and is therefore very challenging to reproduce. We provide a novel approach to obtain a worse bound of 36 moves with high confidence, but that offers two main advantages: (i) it is easy to understand, reproduce, and verify, and (ii) our main idea generalizes to bounding the diameter of other vertex-transitive graphs by at most twice its true value, hence the name "demigod number". Our approach is based on the fact that, for vertex-transitive graphs, the diameter at most twice the average distance (of which we give a much simpler proof than in the literature). Then, by sampling uniformly random states and using a modern solver to obtain upper bounds on their distance, a standard concentration bound allows us to confidently state that the average distance is around 18.32 ± 0.18, from where the diameter is at most 36.

Scalable Routing in a City-Scale Wi-Fi Network for Disaster Recovery

Authors: Ziqian Liu, Om Chabra, James Lynch, Aaron Martin, Chenning Li, and Hari Balakrishnan

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
This paper presents CityMesh, a city-scale decentralized mesh network designed for disaster recovery and emergency scenarios. When wide-area Internet connectivity is unavailable or severely degraded, CityMesh leverages both static access points and mobile devices equipped with Wi-Fi to provide intra-city connectivity and reach opportunistic gateways to the Internet (e.g., via satellite links). The main contribution of this paper is a scalable routing protocol that supports millions of devices, addressing a long-standing limitation of wireless mesh and mobile ad hoc networks. Unlike prior approaches, CityMesh exploits rich building-location and building-geometry data from widely available city maps to guide route computation, improving packet delivery while significantly reducing transmission overhead. Simulation results from 70 cities show that CityMesh improves packet delivery rates by 88% over WEAVE (a state-of-the-art geographic routing protocol). A campus-scale deployment of 300 Wi-Fi devices across 31 buildings shows the practical deployability of CityMesh. These results demonstrate the promise of map-aware routing as a foundation for scalable, resilient city-wide Wi-Fi networks.

Enriching Location Representation with Detailed Semantic Information

Authors: Junyuan Liu, Xinglei Wang, and Tao Cheng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 346, 13th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (GIScience 2025)

Abstract
Spatial representations that capture both structural and semantic characteristics of urban environments are essential for urban modeling. Traditional spatial embeddings often prioritize spatial proximity while underutilizing fine-grained contextual information from places. To address this limitation, we introduce CaLLiPer+, an extension of the CaLLiPer model that systematically integrates Point-of-Interest (POI) names alongside categorical labels within a multimodal contrastive learning framework. We evaluate its effectiveness on two downstream tasks - land use classification and socioeconomic status distribution mapping - demonstrating consistent performance gains of 4% to 11% over baseline methods. Additionally, we show that incorporating POI names enhances location retrieval, enabling models to capture complex urban concepts with greater precision. Ablation studies further reveal the complementary role of POI names and the advantages of leveraging pretrained text encoders for spatial representations. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of integrating fine-grained semantic attributes and multimodal learning techniques to advance the development of urban foundation models.

Extending C+ with Composite Actions for Robotic Task Planning

Authors: Xiaoping Chen, Guoqiang Jin, and Fangkai Yang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 17, Technical Communications of the 28th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP'12) (2012)

Abstract
This paper extends action language C+ by introducing composite actions as sequential execution of other actions, leading to a more intuitive and flexible way to represent action domains, better exploit a general-purpose formalization, and improve the reasoning efficiency for large domains. Our experiments show that the composite actions can be seen as a method of knowledge acquisition for intelligent robots.
