Move-r: Optimizing the r-index

Abstract
We present a static text index called Move-r, which is a highly optimized version of the r-index ([Travis Gagie et al., 2020] Gagie et al., 2020) that encorporates recent theoretical developments of the move data structure ([Takaaki Nishimoto and Yasuo Tabei, 2021] Nishimoto and Tabei, 2021). The r-index is the method of choice for indexing highly repetitive texts, such as different versions of a text document or DNA from the same species, as it exploits the compressibilty of the underlying data. With Move-r, we can answer count- and locate queries 2-35 (typically 15) times as fast as with any other r-index supporting locate queries while being 0.8-2.5 (typically 2) times as large. A Move-r index can be constructed 0.9-2 (typically 2) times as fast while using 1/3-1 (typically 1/2) times as much space.

Arc-Flags Meet Trip-Based Public Transit Routing

Abstract
We present Arc-Flag TB, a journey planning algorithm for public transit networks which combines Trip-Based Public Transit Routing (TB) with the Arc-Flags speedup technique. Compared to previous attempts to apply Arc-Flags to public transit networks, which saw limited success, our approach uses stronger pruning rules to reduce the search space. Our experiments show that Arc-Flag TB achieves a speedup of up to two orders of magnitude over TB, offering query times of less than a millisecond even on large countrywide networks. Compared to the state-of-the-art speedup technique Trip-Based Public Transit Routing Using Condensed Search Trees (TB-CST), our algorithm achieves similar query times but requires significantly less additional memory. Other state-of-the-art algorithms which achieve even faster query times, e.g., Public Transit Labeling, require enormous memory usage. In contrast, Arc-Flag TB offers a tradeoff between query performance and memory usage due to the fact that the number of regions in the network partition required by our algorithm is a configurable parameter. We also identify a previously undiscovered issue in the transfer precomputation of TB, which causes both TB-CST and Arc-Flag TB to answer some queries incorrectly. We provide discussion on how to resolve this issue in the future. Currently, Arc-Flag TB answers 1-6% of queries incorrectly, compared to over 20% for TB-CST on some networks.

Integrating ULTRA and Trip-Based Routing

Abstract
We study a bi-modal journey planning scenario consisting of a public transit network and a transfer graph representing a secondary transportation mode (e.g., walking or cycling). Given a pair of source and target locations, the objective is to find a Pareto set of journeys optimizing arrival time and the number of required transfers. For public transit networks with a restricted, transitively closed transfer graph, one of the fastest known algorithms solving this bi-criteria problem is Trip-Based Routing [Witt, 2015]. However, this algorithm cannot be trivially extended to unrestricted transfer graphs. In this work, we combine Trip-Based Routing with ULTRA [Baum et al., 2019], a preprocessing technique that allows any public transit algorithm that requires transitive transfers to handle an unrestricted transfer graph. Since both ULTRA and Trip-Based Routing precompute transfer shortcuts in a preprocessing phase, a naive combination of the two leads to a three-phase algorithm that performs redundant work and produces superfluous shortcuts. We therefore propose a new, integrated preprocessing phase that combines the advantages of both and reduces the number of computed shortcuts by up to a factor of 9 compared to a naive combination. The resulting query algorithm, ULTRA-Trip-Based is the fastest known algorithm for the considered problem setting, achieving a speedup of up to 4 compared to the fastest previously known approach, ULTRA-RAPTOR.

Mode Personalization in Trip-Based Transit Routing

Abstract
We study the problem of finding bi-criteria Pareto optimal journeys in public transit networks. We extend the Trip-Based Public Transit Routing (TB) approach [Sascha Witt, 2015] to allow for users to select modes of interest at query time. As a first step, we modify the preprocessing of the TB method for it to be correct for any set of selected modes. Then, we change the bi-criteria earliest arrival time queries, and propose a similar algorithm for latest departure time queries, that can handle the definition of the allowed mode set at query time. Experiments are run on 3 networks of different sizes to evaluate the cost of allowing for mode personalization. They show that although preprocessing times are increased, query times are similar when all modes are allowed and lower when some part of the network is removed by mode selection.

In-Place Parallel Super Scalar Samplesort (IPSSSSo)

Abstract
We present a sorting algorithm that works in-place, executes in parallel, is cache-efficient, avoids branch-mispredictions, and performs work O(n log n) for arbitrary inputs with high probability. The main algorithmic contributions are new ways to make distribution-based algorithms in-place: On the practical side, by using coarse-grained block-based permutations, and on the theoretical side, we show how to eliminate the recursion stack. Extensive experiments shw that our algorithm IPSSSSo scales well on a variety of multi-core machines. We outperform our closest in-place competitor by a factor of up to 3. Even as a sequential algorithm, we are up to 1.5 times faster than the closest sequential competitor, BlockQuicksort.

Trip-Based Public Transit Routing Using Condensed Search Trees

Abstract
We study the problem of planning Pareto-optimal journeys in public transit networks. Most existing algorithms and speed-up techniques work by computing subjourneys to intermediary stops until the destination is reached. In contrast, the trip-based model focuses on trips and transfers between them, constructing journeys as a sequence of trips. In this paper, we develop a speed-up technique for this model inspired by principles behind existing state-of-the-art speed-up techniques, Transfer Patterns and Hub Labelling. The resulting algorithm allows us to compute Pareto-optimal (with respect to arrival time and number of transfers) 24-hour profiles on very large real-world networks in less than half a millisecond. Compared to the current state of the art for bicriteria queries on public transit networks, this is up to two orders of magnitude faster, while increasing preprocessing overhead by at most one order of magnitude.
