Powerful Primitives in the Bounded Quantum Storage Model

Abstract
The bounded quantum storage model aims to achieve security against computationally unbounded adversaries that are restricted only with respect to their quantum memories. In this work, we provide the following contributions in this model: 1) We build one-time programs and utilize them to construct CCA1-secure symmetric key encryption and message authentication codes. These schemes require no quantum memory from honest users, yet they provide information-theoretic security against adversaries with arbitrarily large quantum memories, as long as the transmission length is suitably large. 2) We introduce the notion of k-time program broadcast which is a form of program encryption that allows multiple users to each learn a single evaluation of the encrypted program, while preventing any one user from learning more than k evaluations of the program. We build this primitive unconditionally and employ it to construct CCA1-secure asymmetric key encryption, encryption tokens, signatures, and signature tokens. All these schemes are information-theoretically secure against adversaries with roughly e^√m quantum memory where m is the quantum memory required for the honest user. All of the constructions additionally satisfy disappearing security, essentially preventing an adversary from storing and using a transmission later on.

Quantum Advantage and Lower Bounds in Parallel Query Complexity

Abstract
It is well known that quantum, randomized and deterministic (sequential) query complexities are polynomially related for total boolean functions. We find that significantly larger separations between the parallel generalizations of these measures are possible. In particular, 1) We employ the cheatsheet framework to obtain an unbounded parallel quantum query advantage over its randomized analogue for a total function, falsifying a conjecture of [https://arxiv.org/abs/1309.6116]. 2) We strengthen 1 by constructing a total function which exhibits an unbounded parallel quantum query advantage despite having no sequential advantage, suggesting that genuine quantum advantage could occur entirely due to parallelism. 3) We construct a total function that exhibits a polynomial separation between 2-round quantum and randomized query complexities, contrasting a result of [https://arxiv.org/abs/1001.0018] that there is at most a constant separation for 1-round (nonadaptive) algorithms. 4) We develop a new technique for deriving parallel quantum lower bounds from sequential upper bounds. We employ this technique to give lower bounds for Boolean symmetric functions and read-once formulas, ruling out large parallel query advantages for them. We also provide separations between randomized and deterministic parallel query complexities analogous to items 1-3.

Semidefinite programming characterization and spectral adversary method for quantum complexity with noncommuting unitary queries

Authors: Howard Barnum

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 6391, Algorithms and Complexity for Continuous Problems (2007)

Abstract
Generalizing earlier work characterizing the quantum query complexity of computing a function of an unknown classical ``black box'' function drawn from some set of such black box functions, we investigate a more general quantum query model in which the goal is to compute functions of $N imes N$ ``black box'' unitary matrices drawn from a set of such matrices, a problem with applications to determining properties of quantum physical systems. We characterize the existence of an algorithm for such a query problem, with given query and error, as equivalent to the feasibility of a certain set of semidefinite programming constraints, or equivalently the infeasibility of a dual of these constraints, which we construct. Relaxing the primal constraints to correspond to mere pairwise near-orthogonality of the final states of a quantum computer, conditional on the various black-box inputs, rather than bounded-error distinguishability, we obtain a relaxed primal program the feasibility of whose dual still implies the nonexistence of a quantum algorithm. We use this to obtain a generalization, to our not-necessarily-commutative setting, of the ``spectral adversary method'' for quantum query lower bounds.
