BuffCut: Prioritized Buffered Streaming Graph Partitioning

Abstract
Streaming graph partitioners enable resource-efficient and massively scalable partitioning, but one-pass assignment heuristics are highly sensitive to stream order and often yield substantially higher edge cuts than in-memory methods. We present BuffCut, a buffered streaming partitioner that narrows this quality gap, particularly when stream ordering is adversarial, by combining prioritized buffering with batch-wise multilevel assignment. BuffCut maintains a bounded priority buffer to delay poorly informed decisions and regulate the order in which nodes are considered for assignment. It incrementally constructs high-locality batches of configurable size by iteratively inserting the highest-priority nodes from the buffer into the batch, effectively recovering locality structure from the stream. Each batch is then assigned via a multilevel partitioning algorithm. Experiments on diverse real-world and synthetic graphs show that BuffCut consistently outperforms state-of-the-art buffered streaming methods. Compared to the strongest prioritized buffering baseline, BuffCut achieves 20.8% fewer edge cuts while running 2.9× faster and using 11.3× less memory. Against the next-best batched method, it reduces edge cut by 15.8% with only modest overheads of 1.8× runtime and 1.09× memory.

Semantic Web: Past, Present, and Future

Abstract
Ever since the vision was formulated, the Semantic Web has inspired many generations of innovations. Semantic technologies have been used to share vast amounts of information on the Web, enhance them with semantics to give them meaning, and enable inference and reasoning on them. Throughout the years, semantic technologies, and in particular knowledge graphs, have been used in search engines, data integration, enterprise settings, and machine learning. In this paper, we recap the classical concepts and foundations of the Semantic Web as well as modern and recent concepts and applications, building upon these foundations. The classical topics we cover include knowledge representation, creating and validating knowledge on the Web, reasoning and linking, and distributed querying. We enhance this classical view of the so-called "Semantic Web Layer Cake" with an update of recent concepts that include provenance, security and trust, as well as a discussion of practical impacts from industry-led contributions. We conclude with an outlook on the future directions of the Semantic Web. This is a living document. Abstract
The objective of our group was to exploit state-of-the-art Information Retrieval methods for finding associations and dependencies between tags, capturing and representing differences in tagging behavior and vocabulary of various folksonomies, with the overall aim to better understand the semantics of tags and the tagging process. Therefore we analyze the semantic content of tags in the Flickr and Delicious folksonomies. We find that: tag context similarity leads to meaningful results in Flickr, despite its narrow folksonomy character; the comparison of tags across Flickr and Delicious shows little semantic overlap, being tags in Flickr associated more to visual aspects rather than technological as it seems to be in Delicious; there are regions in the tag-tag space, provided with the cosine similarity metric, that are characterized by high density; the order of tags inside a post has a semantic relevance.
