Useful Call-by-Value: A Semantic Interpretation via Quantitative Types

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
Useful evaluation is an optimised evaluation mechanism for functional programming languages. It relies on representing terms with sharing and imposing a restricted notion of useful substitutions, that intuitively disallows copying subterms that do not contribute to the progress of the computation. In particular, useful call-by-value evaluation optimises the standard call-by-value strategy by preserving its original semantics. This preservation result has been shown by means of syntactical rewriting techniques, difficult to adapt to alternative variants of the calculi at play. In this work, we present the first semantic model of useful call-by-value evaluation through the non-idempotent intersection type system 𝒰. Our first contribution is a characterisation of termination for useful call-by-value evaluation via system 𝒰. That is, a term is typable in system 𝒰 if and only if it terminates in the useful call-by-value strategy. As a second contribution, we show that system 𝒰 provides a quantitative interpretation for useful call-by-value evaluation, offering exact step-count information for program evaluation. Our third contribution is that termination in call-by-value and useful call-by-value are equivalent. This ensures in particular that call-by-value, which is (potentially) erasing, and useful call-by-value, which is non-erasing, are observationally equivalent. Even though the specification of the operational semantics of useful evaluation is highly complex, system 𝒰 is notably simple. As far as we know, system 𝒰 is one of the scarce quantitative type systems capturing exactly the substitution step-count for variables and abstractions in an open call-by-value strategy.

Monitoring the Structural Health of Space Habitats Through Immersive Data Art Visualization

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
As humanity advances toward long-term space habitation, traditional SHM systems - reliant on abstract data representations - struggle to support rapid decision-making in extreme environments. This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an engineering-art-human factors framework that transforms SHM through immersive data-art visualization. By integrating sensor networks and machine learning, structural data (stress, vibration, deformation) is converted into intuitive visual languages: dynamic color gradients and biomimetic morphologies leverage perceptual laws (e.g., Weber-Fechner) to amplify critical signals. Multimodal interfaces (AR, haptic feedback) and natural elements mitigate cognitive load and psychological stress in confined habitats. Our contribution lies in redefining SHM as a synergy of precision and intuition, enabling "at-a-glance" assessments while balancing functionality and human-centric design. The urgency of this research stems from the inadequacy of conventional systems in extreme space conditions and the growing demand for astronaut safety and operational efficiency. This framework not only pioneers a sustainable monitoring paradigm for space habitats but also extends to terrestrial high-risk infrastructure, demonstrating the necessity of interdisciplinary innovation in extreme environments.

Unsolvable Terms in Filter Models (Invited Talk)

Authors: Mariangiola Dezani-Ciancaglini, Paola Giannini, and Furio Honsell

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
Intersection type theories (itt’s) and filter models, i.e. λ-calculus models generated by itt’s, are reviewed in full generality. In this framework, which subsumes most λ-calculus models in the literature based on Scott-continuous functions, we discuss the interpretation of unsolvable terms. We give a necessary, but not sufficient, condition on an itt for the interpretation of some unsolvable term to be non-trivial in the filter model it generates. This result is obtained building on a type theoretic characterisation of the fine structure of unsolvables.

A Rewriting Theory for Quantum λ-Calculus

Authors: Claudia Faggian, Gaetan Lopez, and Benoît Valiron

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
Quantum lambda calculus has been studied mainly as an idealized programming language - the evaluation essentially corresponds to a deterministic abstract machine. Very little work has been done to develop a rewriting theory for quantum lambda calculus. Recent advances in the theory of probabilistic rewriting give us a way to tackle this task with tools unavailable a decade ago. Our primary focus are standardization and normalization results.

A Certified Study of a Reversible Programming Language

Authors: Luca Paolini, Mauro Piccolo, and Luca Roversi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 69, 21st International Conference on Types for Proofs and Programs (TYPES 2015) (2018)

Abstract
We advance in the study of the semantics of Janus, a C-like reversible programming language. Our study makes utterly explicit some backward and forward evaluation symmetries. We want to deepen mathematical knowledge about the foundations and design principles of reversible computing and programming languages. We formalize a big-step operational semantics and a denotational semantics of Janus. We show a full abstraction result between the operational and denotational semantics. Last, we certify our results by means of the proof assistant Matita.

Standardization of a Call-By-Value Lambda-Calculus

Authors: Giulio Guerrieri, Luca Paolini, and Simona Ronchi Della Rocca

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 38, 13th International Conference on Typed Lambda Calculi and Applications (TLCA 2015)

Abstract
We study an extension of Plotkin's call-by-value lambda-calculus by means of two commutation rules (sigma-reductions). Recently, it has been proved that this extended calculus provides elegant characterizations of many semantic properties, as for example solvability. We prove a standardization theorem for this calculus by generalizing Takahashi's approach of parallel reductions. The standardization property allows us to prove that our calculus is conservative with respect to the Plotkin's one. In particular, we show that the notion of solvability for this calculus coincides with that for Plotkin's call-by-value lambda-calculus.
