Greening Networking: Toward a Net Zero Internet (Dagstuhl Seminar 24402)

Authors: Alexander Clemm, Dirk Kutscher, Michael Welzl, Cedric Westphal, Noa Zilberman, and Simone Ferlin-Reiter

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 14, Issue 9 (2025)

Abstract
This is the report of the Dagstuhl Seminar 24402 on Greening Networking: Toward a Net Zero Internet that took place from September 29th to October 2nd 2024. The seminar discussed the most impactful networking improvements for reducing carbon emissions in three different areas: 1) applications, systems, and stakeholders; 2) network technologies; and 3) lifecycle and control loops. As a major result of the seminar, the following problems and topics for future research were identified: 1) characterizing the Internet footprint on carbon emissions accurately; 2) understanding attributional and consequential accounting of carbon emissions in networked systems; and 3) identifying potential solutions to give network systems more flexibility in better supporting energy grids and connecting to renewable energy sources. One of the concrete results of this seminar is a list of technologies and research opportunities for which we estimated the potential impact and time horizons.

Compute-First Networking (Dagstuhl Seminar 21243)

Authors: Jon Crowcroft, Philip Eardley, Dirk Kutscher, and Eve M. Schooler

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 11, Issue 5 (2021)

Abstract
A Dagstuhl seminar on Compute-First Networking (CFN) was held online from June 14th to June 16th 2021. We discussed the opportunities and research challenges for a new approach to in-network computing, which aims to overcome limitations of traditional edge/in-network computing systems. The seminar discussed relevant use cases such as privacy-preserving edge video processing, connected and automated driving, and distributed health applications leveraging federated machine learning. A discussion of research challenges included an assessment of recent and expected future developments in networking and computing platforms and the consequences for in-network computing as well as an analysis of hard problems in current edge computing architectures. We exchanged ideas on a variety of research topics and about the results of corresponding activities in the larger fields of distributed computing and network data plane programmability. We also discussed a set of suggested PhD topics and promising future research directions in the CFN space such as split learning that is supported by in-network computing.

Information-Centric Networking 3 (Dagstuhl Seminar 14291)

Authors: Dirk Kutscher, Taekyoung Kwon, and Ignacio Solis

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 4, Issue 7 (2014)

Abstract
This report documents the presentations and discussions of the 3rd Dagstuhl seminar on Information-Centric Networks. This seminar was focused on the deployment and scalability of ICNs. An overview of various ICN projects was used as a starting point for discussions. Participants provided a set of starting questions to cover with the rest of the group. The seminar increased the awareness on the state of the art in ICN research. Various topics on deployment and scalability were discussed. The opinions and comments presented here came directly from the notes taken at the seminar.

A Survey of Information-Centric Networking (Draft)

Authors: Bengt Ahlgren, Christian Dannewitz, Claudio Imbrenda, Dirk Kutscher, and Börje Ohlman

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 10492, Information-Centric Networking (2011)

Abstract
In this paper we compare and discuss some of the features and design choices of the 4WARD Networking of Information architecture (NetInf), PARC's Content Centric Networking(CCN), the Publish-Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm (PSIRP), and the Data Oriented Network Architecture (DONA). All four projects take an information-centric approach to designing a future network architecture, where the information objects themselves are the primary focus rather than the network nodes.
