The Algebra of Patterns

Abstract
Pattern matching is a popular feature in functional, imperative and object-oriented programming languages. Language designers should therefore invest effort in a good design for pattern matching. Most languages choose a first-match semantics for pattern matching; that is, clauses are tried in the order in which they appear in the program until the first one matches. As a consequence, the order in which the clauses appear cannot be arbitrarily changed, which results in a less declarative programming model. The declarative alternative to this is an order-independent semantics for pattern matching, which is not implemented in most programming languages since it requires more verbose patterns. The reason for this verbosity is that the syntax of patterns is usually not expressive enough to express the complement of a pattern. In this paper, we show a principled way to make order-independent pattern matching practical. Our solution consists of two parts: First, we introduce a boolean algebra of patterns which can express the complement of a pattern. Second, we introduce default clauses to pattern matches. These default clauses capture the essential idea of a fallthrough case without sacrificing the property of order-independence.

Unifying Sequent Systems for Gödel-Löb Provability Logic via Syntactic Transformations

Authors: Tim S. Lyon

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
We demonstrate the inter-translatability of proofs between the most prominent sequent-based formalisms for Gödel-Löb provability logic. In particular, we consider Sambin and Valentini’s sequent system GL_{seq}, Shamkanov’s non-wellfounded and cyclic sequent systems GL_∞ and GL_{circ}, Poggiolesi’s tree-hypersequent system CSGL, and Negri’s labeled sequent system G3GL. Shamkanov provided proof-theoretic correspondences between GL_{seq}, GL_∞, and GL_{circ}, and Goré and Ramanayake showed how to transform proofs between CSGL and G3GL, however, the exact nature of proof transformations between the former three systems and the latter two systems has remained an open problem. We solve this open problem by showing how to restructure tree-hypersequent proofs into an end-active form and introduce a novel linearization technique that transforms such proofs into linear nested sequent proofs. As a result, we obtain a new proof-theoretic tool for extracting linear nested sequent systems from tree-hypersequent systems, which yields the first cut-free linear nested sequent calculus LNGL for Gödel-Löb provability logic. We show how to transform proofs in LNGL into a certain normal form, where proofs repeat in stages of modal and local rule applications, and which are translatable into GL_{seq} and G3GL proofs. These new syntactic transformations, together with those mentioned above, establish full proof-theoretic correspondences between GL_{seq}, GL_∞, GL_{circ}, CSGL, G3GL, and LNGL while also giving (to the best of the author’s knowledge) the first constructive proof mappings between structural (viz. labeled, tree-hypersequent, and linear nested sequent) systems and a cyclic sequent system.

Partial Model Checking and Partial Model Synthesis in LTL Using a Tableau-Based Approach

Authors: Serenella Cerrito, Valentin Goranko, and Sophie Paillocher

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 260, 8th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2023)

Abstract
In the process of designing a computer system S and checking whether an abstract model ℳ of S verifies a given specification property η, one might have only a partial knowledge of the model, either because ℳ has not yet been completely defined (constructed) by the designer, or because it is not completely observable by the verifier. This leads to new verification problems, subsuming satisfiability and model checking as special cases. We state and discuss these problems in the case of LTL specifications, and develop a uniform tableau-based approach for their solutions.

Minimisation of Models Satisfying CTL Formulas

Authors: Serenella Cerrito, Amélie David, and Valentin Goranko

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 147, 26th International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2019)

Abstract
We study the problem of minimisation of a given finite pointed Kripke model satisfying a given CTL formula, with the only objective to preserve the satisfaction of that formula in the resulting reduced model. We consider minimisations of the model with respect both to state-based redundancies and formula-based redundancies in that model. We develop a procedure computing all such minimisations, illustrate it with some examples, and provide some complexity analysis for it.
