Nondeterministic Asynchronous Dataflow in Isabelle/HOL

Abstract
We formalize nondeterministic asynchronous dataflow networks in Isabelle/HOL. Dataflow networks are comprised of operators that are capable of communicating with the network, performing silent computations, and making nondeterministic choices. We represent operators using a shallow embedding as codatatypes. Using this representation, we define standard asynchronous dataflow primitives, including sequential and parallel composition and a feedback operator. These primitives adhere to a number of laws from the literature, which we prove by coinduction using weak bisimilarity as our equality. Albeit coinductive and nondeterministic, our model is executable via code extraction to Haskell.

Substructural Parametricity

Authors: C. B. Aberlé, Karl Crary, Chris Martens, and Frank Pfenning

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
Ordered, linear, and other substructural type systems allow us to expose deep properties of programs at the syntactic level of types. In this paper, we develop a family of unary logical relations that allow us to prove consequences of parametricity for a range of substructural type systems. A key idea is to parameterize the relation by an algebra, which we exemplify with a monoid and commutative monoid to interpret ordered and linear type systems, respectively. We prove the fundamental theorem of logical relations and apply it to deduce extensional properties of inhabitants of certain types. Examples include demonstrating that the ordered types for list append and reversal are inhabited by exactly one function, as are types of some tree traversals. Similarly, the linear type of the identity function on lists is inhabited only by permutations of the input. Our most advanced example shows that the ordered type of the list fold function is inhabited only by the fold function.

Contract Usage and Evolution in Android Mobile Applications

Authors: David R. Ferreira, Alexandra Mendes, João F. Ferreira, and Carolina Carreira

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 333, 39th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2025)

Abstract
Contracts and assertions are effective methods to enhance software quality by enforcing preconditions, postconditions, and invariants. Previous research has demonstrated the value of contracts in traditional software development. However, the adoption and impact of contracts in the context of mobile app development, particularly of Android apps, remain unexplored. To address this, we present the first large-scale empirical study on the use of contracts in Android apps, written in Java or Kotlin. We consider contract elements divided into five categories: conditional runtime exceptions, APIs, annotations, assertions, and other. We analyzed 2,390 Android apps from the F-Droid repository and processed 52,977 KLOC to determine 1) how and to what extent contracts are used, 2) which language features are used to denote contracts, 3) how contract usage evolves from the first to the last version, and 4) whether contracts are used safely in the context of program evolution and inheritance. Our findings include: 1) although most apps do not specify contracts, annotation-based approaches are the most popular; 2) apps that use contracts continue to use them in later versions, but the number of methods increases at a higher rate than the number of contracts; and 3) there are potentially unsafe specification changes when apps evolve and in subtyping relationships, which indicates a lack of specification stability. Finally, we present a qualitative study that gathers challenges faced by practitioners when using contracts and that validates our recommendations.

System-Level Timing Performance Estimation Based on a Unifying HW/SW Performance Metric

Abstract
The rapidly increasing complexity of embedded systems and the critical impact of non-functional requirements demand the adoption of an appropriate system-level HW/SW co-design methodology. This methodology tries to satisfy all design requirements by simultaneously considering several alternative HW/SW implementations. In this context, early performance estimation approaches are crucial in reducing the design space, thereby minimizing design time and cost. To address the challenge of system-level performance estimation, this work presents and formalizes a novel approach based on a unifying HW/SW performance metric for early execution time estimation. The proposed approach estimates the execution time of a C function when executed by different HW/SW processor technologies. The approach is validated through an extensive experimental study, demonstrating its effectiveness and efficiency in terms of estimation error (i.e., lower than 10%) and estimation time (close to zero) when compared to existing methods in the literature.

Custom Floating-Point Computations for the Optimization of ODE Solvers on FPGA

Authors: Serena Curzel and Marco Gribaudo

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 127, 16th Workshop on Parallel Programming and Run-Time Management Techniques for Many-Core Architectures and 14th Workshop on Design Tools and Architectures for Multicore Embedded Computing Platforms (PARMA-DITAM 2025)

Abstract
Mean Field Analysis and Markovian Agents are powerful techniques for modeling complex systems of distributed interacting objects, for which efficient analytical and numerical solution algorithms can be implemented through linear systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Solving such ODE systems on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is a promising alternative to traditional CPU- and GPU-based approaches, especially in terms of energy consumption; however, the floating-point computations required are generally thought to be slow and inefficient when implemented on FPGA. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of High-Level Synthesis with automated customization of low-precision floating-point calculations, obtaining hardware accelerators for ODE solvers with improved quality of results and minimal output error. The proposed methodology does not require any manual rewriting of the solver code, but it remains prohibitively slow to evaluate any possible floating-point configuration through logic synthesis; in the future, we will thus implement automated design space exploration methods able to suggest promising configurations under user-defined accuracy and performance constraints.

Verified Progress Tracking for Timely Dataflow

Authors: Matthias Brun, Sára Decova, Andrea Lattuada, and Dmitriy Traytel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 193, 12th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2021)

Abstract
Large-scale stream processing systems often follow the dataflow paradigm, which enforces a program structure that exposes a high degree of parallelism. The Timely Dataflow distributed system supports expressive cyclic dataflows for which it offers low-latency data- and pipeline-parallel stream processing. To achieve high expressiveness and performance, Timely Dataflow uses an intricate distributed protocol for tracking the computation’s progress. We modeled the progress tracking protocol as a combination of two independent transition systems in the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant. We specified and verified the safety of the two components and of the combined protocol. To this end, we identified abstract assumptions on dataflow programs that are sufficient for safety and were not previously formalized.
