A Survey of Real-Time Support, Analysis, and Advancements in ROS 2

Abstract
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) has emerged as a relevant middleware framework for robotic applications, offering modularity, distributed execution, and communication. In the last six years, ROS 2 has drawn increasing attention from the real-time systems community and industry. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of research efforts that analyze, enhance, and extend ROS 2 to support real-time execution. We first provide a detailed description of the internal scheduling mechanisms of ROS 2 and its layered architecture, including the interaction with DDS-based communication and other communication middleware. We then review key contributions from the literature, covering timing analysis for both single- and multi-threaded executors, metrics such as response time, reaction time, and data age, and different communication modes. The survey also discusses community-driven enhancements to the ROS 2 runtime, including new executor algorithm designs, real-time GPU management, and microcontroller support via micro-ROS. Furthermore, we summarize techniques for bounding DDS communication delays, message filters, and profiling tools that have been developed to support analysis and experimentation. To help systematize this growing body of work, we introduce taxonomies that classify the surveyed contributions based on different criteria. This survey aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in understanding and improving the real-time capabilities of ROS 2.

Hardware Compute Partitioning on NVIDIA GPUs for Composable Systems

Abstract
As GPU-using tasks become more common in embedded, safety-critical systems, efficiency demands necessitate sharing a single GPU among multiple tasks. Unfortunately, existing ways to schedule multiple tasks onto a GPU often either result in a loss of ability to meet deadlines, or a loss of efficiency. In this work, we develop a system-level spatial compute partitioning mechanism for NVIDIA GPUs and demonstrate that it can be used to execute tasks efficiently without compromising timing predictability. Our tool, called nvtaskset, supports composable systems by not requiring task, driver, or hardware modifications. In our evaluation, we demonstrate sub-1-μs overheads, stronger partition enforcement, and finer-granularity partitioning when using our mechanism instead of NVIDIA’s Multi-Process Service (MPS) or Multi-instance GPU (MiG) features.

Knowledge Graphs for the Life Sciences: Recent Developments, Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract
The term life sciences refers to the disciplines that study living organisms and life processes, and include chemistry, biology, medicine, and a range of other related disciplines. Research efforts in life sciences are heavily data-driven, as they produce and consume vast amounts of scientific data, much of which is intrinsically relational and graph-structured. The volume of data and the complexity of scientific concepts and relations referred to therein promote the application of advanced knowledge-driven technologies for managing and interpreting data, with the ultimate aim to advance scientific discovery. In this survey and position paper, we discuss recent developments and advances in the use of graph-based technologies in life sciences and set out a vision for how these technologies will impact these fields into the future. We focus on three broad topics: the construction and management of Knowledge Graphs (KGs), the use of KGs and associated technologies in the discovery of new knowledge, and the use of KGs in artificial intelligence applications to support explanations (explainable AI). We select a few exemplary use cases for each topic, discuss the challenges and open research questions within these topics, and conclude with a perspective and outlook that summarizes the overarching challenges and their potential solutions as a guide for future research.

Massively Parallel Algorithms for the Stochastic Block Model

Abstract
Learning the community structure of a large-scale graph is a fundamental problem in machine learning, computer science and statistics. Among others, the Stochastic Block Model (SBM) serves a canonical model for community detection and clustering, and the Massively Parallel Computation (MPC) model is a mathematical abstraction of real-world parallel computing systems, which provides a powerful computational framework for handling large-scale datasets. We study the problem of exactly recovering the communities in a graph generated from the SBM in the MPC model. Specifically, given kn vertices that are partitioned into k equal-sized clusters (i.e., each has size n), a graph on these kn vertices is randomly generated such that each pair of vertices is connected with probability p if they are in the same cluster and with probability q if not, where p > q > 0. We give MPC algorithms for the SBM in the (very general) s-space MPC model, where each machine is guaranteed to have memory s = Ω(log n). Under the condition that (p-q)/√p ≥ Ω̃(k^{1/2} n^{-1/2+1/(2(r-1))}) for any integer r ∈ [3,O(log n)], our first algorithm exactly recovers all the k clusters in O(kr log_s n) rounds using Õ(m) total space, or in O(rlog_s n) rounds using Õ(km) total space. If (p-q)/√p ≥ Ω̃(k^{3/4} n^{-1/4}), our second algorithm achieves O(log_s n) rounds and Õ(m) total space complexity. Both algorithms significantly improve upon a recent result of Cohen-Addad et al. [PODC'22], who gave algorithms that only work in the sublinear space MPC model, where each machine has local memory s = O(n^δ) for some constant δ > 0, with a much stronger condition on p,q,k. Our algorithms are based on collecting the r-step neighborhood of each vertex and comparing the difference of some statistical information generated from the local neighborhoods for each pair of vertices. To implement the clustering algorithms in parallel, we present efficient approaches for implementing some basic graph operations in the s-space MPC model.

Introduction to the Special Issue on Embedded Systems for Computer Vision

Abstract
We provide a broad overview of some of the current research directions at the intersection of embedded systems and computer vision, in addition to introducing the papers appearing in this special issue. Work at this intersection is steadily growing in importance, especially in the context of autonomous and cyber-physical systems design. Vision-based perception is almost a mandatory component in any autonomous system, but also adds myriad challenges like, how to efficiently implement vision processing algorithms on resource-constrained embedded architectures, and how to verify the functional and timing correctness of these algorithms. Computer vision is also crucial in implementing various smart functionality like security, e.g., using facial recognition, or monitoring events or traffic patterns. Some of these applications are reviewed in this introductory article. The remaining articles featured in this special issue dive into more depth on a few of them.
