Abstract
The visual analysis of graphs in 3D has become increasingly popular, accelerated by the rise of immersive technology, such as augmented and virtual reality. Unlike 2D drawings, 3D graph layouts are highly viewpoint-dependent, making perspective selection critical for revealing structural and relational patterns. Despite its importance, there is limited empirical evidence guiding what constitutes an effective or preferred viewpoint from the user’s perspective. In this paper, we present a systematic investigation into user-preferred viewpoints in 3D graph visualisations. We conducted a controlled study with 23 participants in a virtual reality environment, where users selected their most and least preferred viewpoints for 36 different graphs varying in size and layout. From this data, enriched by qualitative feedback, we distil common strategies underlying viewpoint choice. We further analyse the alignment of user preferences with classical 2D aesthetic criteria (e.g., Crossings), 3D-specific measures (e.g., Node-Node Occlusion), and introduce a novel measure capturing the perceivability of a graph’s principal axes (Isometric Viewpoint Deviation). Our data-driven analysis indicates that Stress, Crossings, Gabriel Ratio, Edge-Node Overlap, and Isometric Viewpoint Deviation are key indicators of viewpoint preference. Beyond our findings, we contribute a publicly available dataset consisting of the graphs and computed aesthetic measures, supporting further research and the development of viewpoint evaluation measures for 3D graph drawing.

Hyperbolic Random Graphs: Clique Number and Degeneracy with Implications for Colouring

Abstract
Hyperbolic random graphs inherit many properties that are present in real-world networks. The hyperbolic geometry imposes a scale-free network with a strong clustering coefficient. Other properties like a giant component, the small world phenomena and others follow. This motivates the design of simple algorithms for hyperbolic random graphs. In this paper we consider threshold hyperbolic random graphs (HRGs). Greedy heuristics are commonly used in practice as they deliver a good approximations to the optimal solution even though their theoretical analysis would suggest otherwise. A typical example for HRGs are degeneracy-based greedy algorithms [Bläsius, Fischbeck; Transactions of Algorithms '24]. In an attempt to bridge this theory-practice gap we characterise the parameter of degeneracy yielding a simple approximation algorithm for colouring HRGs. The approximation ratio of our algorithm ranges from (2/√3) to 4/3 depending on the power-law exponent of the model. We complement our findings for the degeneracy with new insights on the clique number of hyperbolic random graphs. We show that degeneracy and clique number are substantially different and derive an improved upper bound on the clique number. Additionally, we show that the core of HRGs does not constitute the largest clique. Lastly we demonstrate that the degeneracy of the closely related standard model of geometric inhomogeneous random graphs behaves inherently different compared to the one of hyperbolic random graphs.

RANDOM
Cover and Hitting Times of Hyperbolic Random Graphs

Abstract
We study random walks on the giant component of Hyperbolic Random Graphs (HRGs), in the regime when the degree distribution obeys a power law with exponent in the range (2,3). In particular, we focus on the expected times for a random walk to hit a given vertex or visit, i.e. cover, all vertices. We show that up to multiplicative constants: the cover time is n(log n)², the maximum hitting time is nlog n, and the average hitting time is n. The first two results hold in expectation and a.a.s. and the last in expectation (with respect to the HRG). We prove these results by determining the effective resistance either between an average vertex and the well-connected "center" of HRGs or between an appropriately chosen collection of extremal vertices. We bound the effective resistance by the energy dissipated by carefully designed network flows associated to a tiling of the hyperbolic plane on which we overlay a forest-like structure.

A Survey on Static Cache Analysis for Real-Time Systems

Published in: LITES, Volume 3, Issue 1 (2016). Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 3, Issue 1

Abstract
Real-time systems are reactive computer systems that must produce their reaction to a stimulus within given time bounds. A vital verification requirement is to estimate the Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) of programs. These estimates are then used to predict the timing behavior of the overall system. The execution time of a program heavily depends on the underlying hardware, among which cache has the biggest influence. Analyzing cache behavior is very challenging due to the versatile cache features and complex execution environment. This article provides a survey on static cache analysis for real-time systems. We first present the challenges and static analysis techniques for independent programs with respect to different cache features. Then, the discussion is extended to cache analysis in complex execution environment, followed by a survey of existing tools based on static techniques for cache analysis. An outlook for future research is provided at last.
