Abstract
A witness Gabriel drawing Γ is a straight-line drawing of a graph in which any two vertices of Γ are adjacent if and only if the disk having these vertices as antipodal points contains no element of a special set of points called witnesses. A witness Gabriel drawing is linearly separable if the vertices and the witnesses lie in opposite half-planes. We prove that every outerplanar graph has a linearly separable witness Gabriel drawing by introducing and studying a new type of drawing that we call a border parabola drawing. We then use border parabola drawings to characterize those triangle-free graphs that admit a linearly separable witness Gabriel drawing. We also consider witness Gabriel drawings where no witness lies in the interior of the convex hull of the vertex set, which we call convexly separable drawings. We construct witness Gabriel drawable graphs for which any witness Gabriel drawing must be convexly separable and that do not admit any linearly separable witness Gabriel drawing.

Abstract
Containerisation is becoming a cornerstone of modern distributed systems, thanks to their lightweight virtualisation, high portability, and seamless integration with orchestration tools such as Kubernetes. The usage of containers has also gained traction in real-time cyber-physical systems, such as software-defined vehicles, which are characterised by strict timing requirements to ensure safety and performance. Nevertheless, ensuring real-time execution of co-located containers is challenging because of mutual interference due to the sharing of the same processing hardware. Existing parallel computing frameworks such as Ray and its Kubernetes-enabled variant, KubeRay, excel in distributed computation but lack support for scheduling policies that allow guaranteeing real-time timing constraints and CPU resource isolation between containers, such as the SCHED_DEADLINE policy of Linux. To fill this gap, this paper extends Ray to support real-time containers that leverage SCHED_DEADLINE. To this end, we propose KubeDeadline, a novel, modular Kubernetes extension to support SCHED_DEADLINE. We evaluate our approach through extensive experiments, using synthetic workloads and a case study based on the MobileNet and EfficientNet deep neural networks. Our evaluation shows that KubeDeadline ensures deadline compliance in all synthetic workloads, adds minimal deployment overhead (in the order of milliseconds), and achieves lower worst-case response times, up to 4 times lower, than vanilla Kubernetes under background interference.

Adaptable Demonstrator Platform for the Simulation of Distributed Agent-Based Automotive Systems

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 79, 2nd International Workshop on Autonomous Systems Design (ASD 2020)

Abstract
Future autonomous vehicles will no longer have a driver as a fallback solution in case of critical failure scenarios. However, it is costly to add hardware redundancy to achieve a fail-operational behaviour. Here, graceful degradation can be used by repurposing the allocated resources of non-critical applications for safety-critical applications. The degradation problem can be solved as a part of an application mapping problem. As future automotive software will be highly customizable to meet customers' demands, the mapping problem has to be solved for each individual configuration and the architecture has to be adaptable to frequent software changes. Thus, the mapping problem has to be solved at run-time as part of the software platform. In this paper we present an adaptable demonstrator platform consisting of a distributed simulation environment to evaluate such approaches. The platform can be easily configured to evaluate different hardware architectures. We discuss the advantages and limitations of this platform and present an exemplary demonstrator configuration running an agent-based graceful degradation approach.

Hardness of Equations over Finite Solvable Groups Under the Exponential Time Hypothesis

Authors: Armin Weiß

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 168, 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020)

Abstract
Goldmann and Russell (2002) initiated the study of the complexity of the equation satisfiability problem in finite groups by showing that it is in 𝖯 for nilpotent groups while it is 𝖭𝖯-complete for non-solvable groups. Since then, several results have appeared showing that the problem can be solved in polynomial time in certain solvable groups of Fitting length two. In this work, we present the first lower bounds for the equation satisfiability problem in finite solvable groups: under the assumption of the exponential time hypothesis, we show that it cannot be in 𝖯 for any group of Fitting length at least four and for certain groups of Fitting length three. Moreover, the same hardness result applies to the equation identity problem.

An Automaton Group with PSPACE-Complete Word Problem

Authors: Jan Philipp Wächter and Armin Weiß

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 154, 37th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2020)

Abstract
We construct an automaton group with a PSPACE-complete word problem, proving a conjecture due to Steinberg. Additionally, the constructed group has a provably more difficult, namely EXPSPACE-complete, compressed word problem. Our construction directly simulates the computation of a Turing machine in an automaton group and, therefore, seems to be quite versatile. It combines two ideas: the first one is a construction used by D'Angeli, Rodaro and the first author to obtain an inverse automaton semigroup with a PSPACE-complete word problem and the second one is to utilize a construction used by Barrington to simulate circuits of bounded degree and logarithmic depth in the group of even permutations over five elements.
