Useful Call-by-Value: A Semantic Interpretation via Quantitative Types

Abstract
Useful evaluation is an optimised evaluation mechanism for functional programming languages. It relies on representing terms with sharing and imposing a restricted notion of useful substitutions, that intuitively disallows copying subterms that do not contribute to the progress of the computation. In particular, useful call-by-value evaluation optimises the standard call-by-value strategy by preserving its original semantics. This preservation result has been shown by means of syntactical rewriting techniques, difficult to adapt to alternative variants of the calculi at play. In this work, we present the first semantic model of useful call-by-value evaluation through the non-idempotent intersection type system 𝒰. Our first contribution is a characterisation of termination for useful call-by-value evaluation via system 𝒰. That is, a term is typable in system 𝒰 if and only if it terminates in the useful call-by-value strategy. As a second contribution, we show that system 𝒰 provides a quantitative interpretation for useful call-by-value evaluation, offering exact step-count information for program evaluation. Our third contribution is that termination in call-by-value and useful call-by-value are equivalent. This ensures in particular that call-by-value, which is (potentially) erasing, and useful call-by-value, which is non-erasing, are observationally equivalent. Even though the specification of the operational semantics of useful evaluation is highly complex, system 𝒰 is notably simple. As far as we know, system 𝒰 is one of the scarce quantitative type systems capturing exactly the substitution step-count for variables and abstractions in an open call-by-value strategy.

Enhancing Creative Thinking Through Gamification in LMS Environments

Abstract
Gamification in educational context involves applying game design elements and principles to enhance the learning experience. By incorporating the motivational features of games, it aims to engage students and support educational goals. The work presented in this article is part of ThinkGame Erasmus+ project. The project’s goal is to encourage the use of Learning Management System (LMS) tools, such as lessons, wikis, and online tests to create gamified experiences in programming classes. These innovative strategies are intended to boost student motivation and creativity by incorporating compelling narratives, adaptable challenges, collaborative tasks, and continuous feedback. Another important challenge addressed in the project was fostering creativity among teachers, encouraging them to transform conventional, non-gamified resources into engaging and thought-provoking activities for students. A case study composed of ten gamified experiences was developed at Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, one of the project partners, during one semester in Imperative Programming subject.

CVTool: Automating Content Variants of CVs

Abstract
As academic professionals, we frequently need to create different versions of our CVs for project applications, career evaluations, or competitions. These versions may be chronologically structured or skill-oriented, covering specific periods and written in various languages. Even when using a LaTeX document as a base, numerous modifications are required each time an updated CV version is requested for a specific purpose. The primary objective of the project reported in this paper is to design and implement a web-based system (CVTool) that simplifies the management of LaTeX CV content while ensuring flexibility. The CVTool is built on a domain-specific language that enables the creation of various filters, allowing for the automatic content adjustment while preserving the original format. Information is extracted from the LaTeX document, and users can specify the sections, dates, skills they want to highlight, and the language in which the CV should be generated. Since the approach relies on an internal data representation derived from the original LaTeX document, it offers users the flexibility to manage content efficiently and extract the necessary information with ease.

Randomization as Mitigation of Directed Timing Inference Based Attacks on Time-Triggered Real-Time Systems with Task Replication

Abstract
Time-triggered real-time systems achieve deterministic behavior using schedules that are constructed offline, based on scheduling constraints. Their deterministic behavior makes time-triggered systems suitable for usage in safety-critical environments, like avionics. However, this determinism also allows attackers to fine-tune attacks that can be carried out after studying the behavior of the system through side channels, targeting safety-critical victim tasks. Replication -- i.e., the execution of task variants across different cores -- is inherently able to tolerate both accidental and malicious faults (i.e. attacks) as long as these faults are independent of one another. Yet, targeted attacks on the timing behavior of tasks which utilize information gained about the system behavior violate the fault independence assumption fault tolerance is based on. This violation may give attackers the opportunity to compromise all replicas simultaneously, in particular if they can mount the attack from already compromised components. In this paper, we analyze vulnerabilities of time-triggered systems, focusing on safety-certified multicore real-time systems. We introduce two runtime mitigation strategies to withstand directed timing inference based attacks: (i) schedule randomization at slot level, and (ii) randomization within a set of offline constructed schedules. We evaluate these mitigation strategies with synthetic experiments and a real case study to show their effectiveness and practicality.

MUAHAH: Taking the Most out of Simple Conversational Agents

Abstract
Dialog engines based on multi-agent architectures usually select a single agent, deemed to be the most suitable for a given scenario or for responding to a specific request, and disregard the answers from all of the other available agents. In this work, we present a multi-agent plug-and-play architecture that: (i) enables the integration of different agents; (ii) includes a decision maker module, responsible for selecting a suitable answer out of the responses of different agents. As usual, a single agent can be chosen to provide the final answer, but the latter can also be obtained from the responses of several agents, according to a voting scheme. We also describe three case studies in which we test several agents and decision making strategies; and show how new agents and a new decision strategy can be easily plugged in and take advantage of this platform in different ways. Experimentation also confirms that considering several agents contributes to better responses.

Active Methodologies in Incoming Programming Classes (Short Paper)

Abstract
Innovative approaches in teaching programming have been required to improve the success of incoming programming students. This work presents the initial results of a teaching strategy implemented in the Algorithms subject of a Computer Science course. Ninety-five students, enrolled in this subject during the first semester of the course, participated in the research. The reported activity is related with active methodologies of teaching and Problem-Based Learning, being developed on the first day of class in groups of up to five students. The activity was based in two actions: 1) answering a questionnaire associating computing elements to daily life routines; and, 2) even without programming concepts knowledge, develop a smartphone application. Each group received a questionnaire containing 19 questions, divided into four blocks. What can be perceived with the accomplishment of this work, was the enthusiasm, motivation and engagement of the students who, even being unknown from each other, organized themselves in the groups and researched the necessary strategies to complete the challenge. The teacher acted as an advisor in the teaching process, conducting the experiment in order to lead students to find the solution.

EasyCoding - Methodology to Support Programming Learning

Abstract
Knowing that the programming curricular units in the first year of engineering courses have a high failure rate and, assuming that this failure is due, in large part, to the lack of motivation and the lack of autonomy of the student to program in context outside the classroom, a methodology based on activity guides using attractive web platforms is proposed. The proposed methodology aims to facilitate both the planning of activities by the teachers and the autonomy and motivation by students. In order to receive a first feedback about this work, the methodology is being used by programming professors from Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, but in the near future it will be also evaluated by professors from the Federal Center of Technological Education of Minas Gerais and from the Federal Technological University of Paraná, both from Brazil. Following this work, a system is being developed that allows the automatic construction of guides based on exercises available from the web and systems that facilitate the collection of solutions and analysis of results.
