Rule Rewriting Revisited: A Fresh Look at Static Filtering for Datalog and ASP

Authors: Philipp Hanisch and Markus Krötzsch

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 365, 29th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2026)

Abstract
Static filtering is a data-independent optimisation method for Datalog, which generalises algebraic query rewriting techniques from relational databases. In spite of its early discovery by Kifer and Lozinskii in 1986, the method has been overlooked in recent research and system development, and special cases are being rediscovered independently. We therefore recall the original approach, using updated terminology and more general filter predicates that capture features of modern systems, and we show how to extend its applicability to answer set programming (ASP). The outcome is strictly more general but also more complex than the classical approach: double exponential in general and single exponential even for predicates of bounded arity. As a solution, we propose tractable approximations of the algorithm that can still yield much improved logic programs in typical cases, e.g., it can improve the performance of rule systems over real-world data in the order of magnitude.

Inconsistency-Tolerant Semantics Based on (Preferred) Repairs (Invited Paper)

Authors: Camille Bourgaux

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Real-world datasets are plagued by data quality issues which may render the data inconsistent w.r.t. a set of constraints, be they given by database integrity constraints or ontologies. A prominent way to handle such inconsistent data is to use inconsistency-tolerant semantics to obtain meaningful answers to queries. Most of these semantics are based on some notion of repairs, which represent ways of restoring the data consistency. The most basic kind of repairs is that of subset repairs, which are maximal consistent subsets of the dataset. However, in many scenarios, one can define preferred repairs based on some preference information. These lecture notes present inconsistency-tolerant semantics, focusing on the repair-based ones, then review different kinds of preferred repairs that have been considered in the literature. We present in particular the relationships between different kinds of preferred repairs and other notions related to inconsistency handling, the computational complexity of reasoning with (preferred) repairs, and some implementations.

Enumeration of Minimal Hitting Sets Parameterized by Treewidth

Authors: Batya Kenig and Dan Shlomo Mizrahi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 328, 28th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2025)

Abstract
Enumerating the minimal hitting sets of a hypergraph is a problem which arises in many data management applications that include constraint mining, discovering unique column combinations, and enumerating database repairs. Previously, Eiter et al. [Thomas Eiter et al., 2003] showed that the minimal hitting sets of an n-vertex hypergraph, with treewidth w, can be enumerated with delay O^*(n^w) (ignoring polynomial factors), with space requirements that scale with the output size. We improve this to fixed-parameter-linear delay, following an FPT preprocessing phase. The memory consumption of our algorithm is exponential with respect to the treewidth of the hypergraph.

Logics for Conceptual Data Modelling: A Review

Authors: Pablo R. Fillottrani and C. Maria Keet

Published in: TGDK, Volume 2, Issue 1 (2024): Special Issue on Trends in Graph Data and Knowledge - Part 2. Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 2, Issue 1

Abstract
Information modelling for databases and object-oriented information systems avails of conceptual data modelling languages such as EER and UML Class Diagrams. Many attempts exist to add logical rigour to them, for various reasons and with disparate strengths. In this paper we aim to provide a structured overview of the many efforts. We focus on aims, approaches to the formalisation, including key dimensions of choice points, popular logics used, and the main relevant reasoning services. We close with current challenges and research directions.

On the Termination of Logic Programs with Function Symbols

Authors: Sergio Greco, Francesca Spezzano, and Irina Trubitsyna

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 17, Technical Communications of the 28th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP'12) (2012)

Abstract
Recently there has been an increasing interest in the bottom-up evaluation of the semantics of logic programs with complex terms. The main problem due to the presence of functional symbols in the head of rules is that the corresponding ground program could be infinite and that finiteness of models and termination of the evaluation procedure is not guaranteed. This paper introduces, by deeply analyzing program structure, new decidable criteria, called safety and Gamma-acyclicity, for checking termination of logic programs with function symbols under bottom-up evaluation. These criteria guarantee that stable models are finite and computable, as it is possible to generate a finitely ground program equivalent to the source program. We compare new criteria with other decidable criteria known in the literature and show that the Gamma-acyclicity criterion is the most general one. We also discuss its application in answering bound queries.
