Certified Implementability of Global Multiparty Protocols

Abstract
Implementability is the decision problem at the heart of top-down approaches to protocol verification. In this paper, we present a mechanization of a recently proposed precise implementability characterization by Li et al. for a large class of protocols that subsumes many existing formalisms in the literature. Our protocols and implementations model asynchronous commmunication, and can exhibit infinite behavior. We improve upon their pen-and-paper results by unifying distinct formalisms, simplifying existing proof arguments, elaborating on the construction of canonical implementations, and even uncovering a subtle bug in the semantics for infinite words. As a corollary of our mechanization, we show that the original characterization of implementability applies even to protocols with infinitely many participants. We also contribute a reusable library for reasoning about generic communicating state machines. Our mechanization consists of about 15k lines of Rocq code. We believe that our mechanization can provide the foundation for deductively proving the implementability of protocols beyond the reach of prior work, extracting certified implementations for finite protocols, and investigating implementability under alternative asynchronous communication models.

Higher-Dimensional Automata: Extension to Infinite Tracks

Authors: Luc Passemard, Amazigh Amrane, and Uli Fahrenberg

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
We introduce higher-dimensional automata for infinite interval ipomsets (ω-HDAs). We define key concepts from different points of view, inspired from their finite counterparts. Then we explore languages recognized by ω-HDAs under Büchi and Muller semantics. We show that Muller acceptance is more expressive than Büchi acceptance and, in contrast to the finite case, both semantics do not yield languages closed under subsumption. Then, we adapt the original rational operations to deal with ω-HDAs and show that while languages of ω-HDAs are ω-rational, not all ω-rational languages can be expressed by ω-HDAs.

Faster All-Pairs Optimal Electric Car Routing

Authors: Dani Dorfman, Haim Kaplan, Robert E. Tarjan, Mikkel Thorup, and Uri Zwick

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We present a randomized Õ(n^{3.5})-time algorithm for computing optimal energetic paths for an electric car between all pairs of vertices in an n-vertex directed graph with positive and negative costs, or gains, which are defined to be the negatives of the costs. The optimal energetic paths are finite and well-defined even if the graph contains negative-cost, or equivalently, positive-gain, cycles. This makes the problem much more challenging than standard shortest paths problems. More specifically, for every two vertices s and t in the graph, the algorithm computes α_B(s,t), the maximum amount of charge the car can reach t with, if it starts at s with full battery, i.e., with charge B, where B is the capacity of the battery. The algorithm also outputs a concise description of the optimal energetic paths that achieve these values. In the presence of positive-gain cycles, optimal paths are not necessarily simple. For dense graphs, our new Õ(n^{3.5}) time algorithm improves on a previous Õ(mn²)-time algorithm of Dorfman et al. [ESA 2023] for the problem. The gain of an arc is the amount of charge added to the battery of the car when traversing the arc. The charge in the battery can never exceed the capacity B of the battery and can never be negative. An arc of positive gain may correspond, for example, to a downhill road segment, while an arc with a negative gain may correspond to an uphill segment. A positive-gain cycle, if one exists, can be used in certain cases to charge the battery to its capacity. This makes the problem more interesting and more challenging. As mentioned, optimal energetic paths are well-defined even in the presence of positive-gain cycles. Positive-gain cycles may arise when certain road segments have magnetic charging strips, or when the electric car has solar panels. Combined with a result of Dorfman et al. [SOSA 2024], this also provides a randomized Õ(n^{3.5})-time algorithm for computing minimum-cost paths between all pairs of vertices in an n-vertex graph when the battery can be externally recharged, at varying costs, at intermediate vertices.

Modeling Subway Networks and Passenger Flows

Authors: Antoine Thébault, Loïc Hélouët, and Kenza Saiah

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 123, 24th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2024)

Abstract
Simulation of urban rail networks provides useful information to optimize traffic management strategies w.r.t. goals such as satisfaction of passenger demands, adherence to schedules or energy saving. Many network models are too precise for the analysis needs, and do not exploit concurrency. This results in an explosion in the size of models, and long simulation times. This paper presents an extension of Petri nets that handles trajectories of trains, passenger flows, and scenarios for passenger arrivals. We then define a fast event-based simulation scheme. We test our model on a real case study, the Metro of Montreal, and show that full days of train operations with passengers can be simulated in a few seconds, allowing analysis of quantitative properties.

Resilience of Timed Systems

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 213, 41st IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2021)

Abstract
This paper addresses reliability of timed systems in the setting of resilience, that considers the behaviors of a system when unspecified timing errors such as missed deadlines occur. Given a fault model that allows transitions to fire later than allowed by their guard, a system is universally resilient (or self-resilient) if after a fault, it always returns to a timed behavior of the non-faulty system. It is existentially resilient if after a fault, there exists a way to return to a timed behavior of the non-faulty system, that is, if there exists a controller which can guide the system back to a normal behavior. We show that universal resilience of timed automata is undecidable, while existential resilience is decidable, in EXPSPACE. To obtain better complexity bounds and decidability of universal resilience, we consider untimed resilience, as well as subclasses of timed automata.

Hyper Partial Order Logic

Authors: Béatrice Bérard, Stefan Haar, and Loic Hélouët

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 122, 38th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2018)

Abstract
We define HyPOL, a local hyper logic for partial order models, expressing properties of sets of runs. These properties depict shapes of causal dependencies in sets of partially ordered executions, with similarity relations defined as isomorphisms of past observations. Unsurprisingly, since comparison of projections are included, satisfiability of this logic is undecidable. We then address model checking of HyPOL and show that, already for safe Petri nets, the problem is undecidable. Fortunately, sensible restrictions of observations and nets allow us to bring back model checking of HyPOL to a decidable problem, namely model checking of MSO on graphs of bounded treewidth.
