Abstract
FPGAs are increasingly being adopted across the edge-to-cloud continuum due to their ability to provide both high performance and energy efficiency. However, the complexity of programming FPGAs often leads to deployed designs that underutilize available resources. FPGA multi-tenancy has been proposed to enhance resource utilization, yet monolithic designs and dynamic workload demands continue to challenge efficient FPGA usage and compliance with Quality of Service requirements. To address these issues, we propose a novel framework for the optimal orchestration of FPGAs across the edge-to-cloud continuum while meeting user demands. The framework generates approximations of Pareto-optimal designs for each application, capturing trade-offs between performance and resource usage with minimal bitstream generation. This information allows the runtime orchestrator to select the most suitable design based on available PR regions and the QoS requirements of each user. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves an average reduction of QoS violations by a factor of 8.1× across diverse workloads and baseline configurations. Overall, the framework offers a practical and effective solution for realizing FPGA-as-a-Service across the edge-to-cloud continuum.

Navigating Exoplanetary Systems in Augmented Reality: Preliminary Insights on ExoAR

Authors: Bryson Lawton, Frank Maurer, and Daniel Zielasko

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
With thousands of exoplanets now confirmed by space missions such as NASA’s Kepler and TESS, scientific interest and public curiosity about these distant worlds continue to grow. However, current visualization tools for exploring exoplanetary systems often lack sufficient scientific accuracy or interactive features, limiting their educational effectiveness and analytical utility. To help address this gap, we developed ExoAR, an augmented reality tool designed to offer immersive, scientifically sound visualizations of all known exoplanetary systems using data directly sourced from NASA’s Exoplanet Archive. By leveraging augmented reality’s strengths, ExoAR enables users to immerse themselves in interactive, dynamic 3D models of these planetary systems with data-driven representations of planets and their host stars. The application also allows users to adjust various visualization scales independently, a capability designed to aid comprehension of comparative astronomical properties such as orbital mechanics, planetary sizes, and stellar classifications. To begin assessing ExoAR’s potential as an educational and analytical tool and inform future iterations, a pilot user study was conducted. Its findings indicate that participants found ExoAR improved user engagement and spatial understanding compared to NASA’s Eyes on Exoplanets application, a non-immersive exoplanetary system visualization tool. This work-in-progress paper presents these early insights, acknowledges current system limitations, and outlines future directions for more rigorously evaluating and further improving ExoAR’s capabilities for both educational and scientific communities.

Practically Feasible Proof Logging for Pseudo-Boolean Optimization

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 340, 31st International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2025)

Abstract
Certifying solvers have long been standard for decision problems in Boolean satisfiability (SAT), allowing for proof logging and checking with very limited overhead, but developing similar tools for combinatorial optimization has remained a challenge. A recent promising approach covering a wide range of solving paradigms is pseudo-Boolean proof logging, but this has mostly consisted of proof-of-concept works far from delivering the performance required for real-world deployment. In this work, we present an efficient toolchain based on VeriPB and CakePB for formally verified pseudo-Boolean optimization. We implement proof logging for the full range of techniques in the state-of-the-art solvers RoundingSat and Sat4j, including core-guided search and linear programming integration with Farkas certificates and cut generation. Our experimental evaluation shows that proof logging and checking performance in this much more expressive paradigm is now quite close to the level of SAT solving, and hence is clearly practically feasible.

A new project to address run-time reconfigurable hardware systems

Authors: Jim Torresen and Dirk Koch

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 10281, Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures (2010)

Abstract
Last autumn, we started a new project named Context Switching Reconfigurable Hardware for Communication Systems (COSRECOS). In this talk, I would like to present how we plan to address the challenge of changing hardware configurations while a system is in operation. The overall goal of the project is to contribute in making run-time reconfigurable systems more feasible in general. This includes introducing architectures for reducing reconfiguration time as well as undertaking tool development. Case studies by applications in network and communication systems will be a part of the project. Comments to the planned outline are much welcome.

Advances in Component-based System Design and Partial Run-time Reconfiguration

Authors: Dirk Koch

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 10281, Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures (2010)

Abstract
With passing over the 1M LUT barrier, FPGA technology is heading into new challenges and opportunities. While the present ASIC-like design methodology and tools will struggle to scale with such huge devices, providing partial run-time reconfiguration will be become obligatory for dealing with long configuration times and the increasing vulnerability to single event upsets. Within the COSRECOS project, we address these issues by developing methods and tools that allow to compose systems rapidly by plugging together fully physically implemented components. Moreover, by allowing a hot-swapping of such components, the tremendous advantages of partial run-time reconfiguration can be utilized. This talk will give an overview of recent trends, our present research activities, and will discuss open issues.
