Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. Ensuring Convergence and Invariants Without Coordination

Abstract
The CAP theorem demonstrates a trade-off between consistency and availability (and, by extension, latency) in systems where network partitions are unavoidable, such as in cloud computing and local-first software. While adopting weak consistency can preserve availability, it may result in inconsistencies that compromise application correctness. Replicated data types provide a principled, coordination-free approach to guarantee convergence but do not consider application invariants. Existing methods for maintaining invariants in replicated systems either rely on coordination - undermining the benefits of weak consistency - or suffer from limited applicability. This paper introduces the No-Op framework, a generic approach for enforcing consistency without coordination while guaranteeing both convergence and invariant preservation. The core idea of the No-Op approach is to resolve conflicts among concurrent operations by prioritising one operation over the other according to programmer-defined conflict resolution policies. This prioritisation transforms the less-preferred operation into a no-side-effect operation, ensuring conflict-free execution. We formalise the model underlying the No-Op framework and introduce a replication protocol built upon it, accompanied by a formal proof of correctness for both the framework and the protocol. Furthermore, we demonstrate the framework’s applicability by showcasing the design of widely used replicated data types and the preservation of a wide range of application invariants.

A Hybrid Programming Language for Formal Modeling and Verification of Hybrid Systems

Abstract
Designing and modeling complex cyber-physical systems (CPS) faces the double challenge of combined discrete-continuous dynamics and concurrent behavior. Existing formal modeling and verification languages for CPS expose the underlying proof search technology. They lack high-level structuring elements and are not efficiently executable. The ensuing modeling gap renders formal CPS models hard to understand and to validate. We propose a high-level programming-based approach to formal modeling and verification of hybrid systems as a hybrid extension of an Active Objects language. Well-structured hybrid active programs and requirements allow automatic, reachability-preserving translation into differential dynamic logic, a logic for hybrid (discrete-continuous) programs. Verification is achieved by discharging the resulting formulas with the theorem prover KeYmaera X. We demonstrate the usability of our approach with case studies.

Characterizing Data Dependence Constraints for Dynamic Reliability Using n-Queens Attack Domains

Abstract
As data centers attempt to cope with the exponential growth of data, new techniques for intelligent, software-defined data centers (SDDC) are being developed to confront the scale and pace of changing resources and requirements.  For cost-constrained environments, like those increasingly present in scientific research labs, SDDCs also may provide better reliability and performability with no additional hardware through the use of dynamic syndrome allocation. To do so, the middleware layers of SDDCs must be able to calculate and account for complex dependence relationships to determine an optimal data layout.  This challenge is exacerbated by the growth of constraints on the dependence problem when available resources are both large (due to a higher number of syndromes that can be stored) and small (due to the lack of available space for syndrome allocation). We present a quantitative method for characterizing these challenges using an analysis of attack domains for high-dimension variants of the $n$-queens problem that enables performable solutions via the SMT solver Z3. We demonstrate correctness of our technique, and provide experimental evidence of its efficacy; our implementation is publicly available.

Abstract
Advances in information technology and computational power have opened the doors for auctioneers to explore a range of auction formats by considering varying degrees of bid expressivity and different payment rule, e.g., single price vs. discriminatory prices. While it is clear that one can design more complicated auctions, it is still not clear if should do so and which auction parameters have the greatest impact on the performance on cost and efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to gain some insight into this question, via analytical and experimental methods.
