Cloning Games, Black Holes and Cryptography

Abstract
In this work, we introduce a new toolkit for analyzing cloning games, a notion that captures stronger and more quantitative versions of the celebrated quantum no-cloning theorem. This framework allows us to analyze a new cloning game based on binary phase states. Our results provide evidence that these games may be able to overcome important limitations of previous candidates based on BB84 states and subspace coset states: in a model where the adversaries are restricted to making a single oracle query, we show that the binary phase variant is t-copy secure when t = o(n/log n). Moreover, for constant t, we obtain the first optimal bounds of O(2^{-n}), asymptotically matching the value attained by a trivial adversarial strategy. We also show a worst-case to average-case reduction which allows us to show the same quantitative results for the new and natural notion of Haar cloning games. Our analytic toolkit, which we believe will find further applications, is based on binary subtypes and uses novel bounds on the operator norms of block-wise tensor products of matrices. To illustrate the effectiveness of these new techniques, we present two applications: first, in black-hole physics, where our asymptotically optimal bound offers quantitative insights into information scrambling in idealized models of black holes; and second, in unclonable cryptography, where we (a) construct succinct unclonable encryption schemes from the existence of pseudorandom unitaries, and (b) propose and provide evidence for the security of multi-copy unclonable encryption schemes.

Automating Control System Design: Using Language Models for Expert Knowledge in Decentralized Controller Auto-Tuning

Abstract
Fully-automated optimal controller design for engineering systems is a challenging task. While, optimization-based, automated control parameter tuning techniques have been widely discussed in the literature, most works do not discuss expert knowledge requirements for system design, which result in significant human intervention. In this work, we discuss a multistage controller tuning framework for decentralized control that highlights expert knowledge requirements in automated controller design. We propose a methodology to automate the input-output pairing and stage definition steps in the framework using Large Language Models (LLMs) for a family of multi-tank benchmarks. We achieve this by proposing a mathematical language to describe the system and design an algorithm to bind this mathematical representation to the input prompt space of an LLM. We demonstrate that our methodology can produce consistent expert knowledge outputs from the LLM with over 97% accuracy for the multi-tank benchmarks. We also empirically show that, correct stage definition by the LLM can improve tuned controller performance by up to 52%.

Sliding Squares in Parallel

Abstract
We consider algorithmic problems motivated by modular robotic reconfiguration in the sliding square model, in which we are given n square-shaped modules in a (labeled or unlabeled) start configuration and need to find a schedule of sliding moves to transform it into a desired goal configuration, maintaining connectivity of the configuration at all times. Recent work has aimed at minimizing the total number of moves, resulting in fully sequential schedules that can perform reconfiguration in 𝒪(n²) moves, or 𝒪(nP) for arrangements of bounding box perimeter size P. We provide first results in the sliding square model that exploit parallel motion, performing reconfiguration in worst-case optimal makespan of 𝒪(P). We also provide tight bounds on the complexity of the problem by showing that even deciding the possibility of reconfiguration within makespan 1 is NP-complete in the unlabeled case. In the labeled variant, we note that deciding the same for makespan 2 is NP-complete, while makespan 1 is straightforward.

Quantum Hedging in Two-Round Prover-Verifier Interactions

Abstract
We consider the problem of a particular kind of quantum correlation that arises in some two-party games. In these games, one player is presented with a question they must answer, yielding an outcome of either "win" or "lose". Molina and Watrous previously studied such a game that exhibited a perfect form of hedging, where the risk of losing a first game can completely offset the corresponding risk for a second game. This is a non-classical quantum phenomenon, and establishes the impossibility of performing strong error-reduction for quantum interactive proof systems by parallel repetition, unlike for classical interactive proof systems. We take a step in this article towards a better understanding of the hedging phenomenon by giving a complete characterization of when perfect hedging is possible for a natural generalization of the game in the prior work of Molina and Watrous. Exploring in a different direction the subject of quantum hedging, and motivated by implementation concerns regarding loss-tolerance, we also consider a variation of the protocol where the player who receives the question can choose to restart the game rather than return an answer. We show that in this setting there is no possible hedging for any game played with state spaces corresponding to finite-dimensional complex Euclidean spaces.
