Computing Consistent Least Upper Bounds in Aggregate Logic

Abstract
We consider the problem of answering conjunctive queries with aggregation on database instances that may violate primary key constraints. In SQL, these queries follow the SELECT-FROM-WHERE-GROUP BY format, where the WHERE clause involves a conjunction of equalities, and the SELECT clause can incorporate aggregate operators like MAX, MIN, SUM, AVG, or COUNT. Repairs of a database instance are defined as inclusion-maximal subsets that satisfy all primary keys. The range-consistent answer to a numerical query over an inconsistent database is a pair [glb, lub], where glb and lub are, respectively, the smallest and the greatest results returned by the query over all possible repairs. While previous work has focused on the computation of the glb, the current paper studies the computation of the lub for a numerical domain of non-negative rational numbers. We introduce the notion of κ-acyclicity for self-join-free conjunctive queries. We show that if the body of a SUM-query is κ-acyclic, then the lub can be computed through a rewriting in first-order aggregate logic. Moreover, we show that this result extends to all aggregate operators that are monotone and associative. Importantly, we also prove the inverse: if the body of a SUM-query is not κ-acyclic, then the lub cannot be computed in first-order aggregate logic.

Conjunctive Query Containment with Safe Negation and TGD One-Boundedness

Authors: Xavier Oriol

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 365, 29th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2026)

Abstract
Query containment is a fundamental database problem which has been extensively studied for conjunctive queries (CQs). The most famous result is arguably the Homomorphism Theorem: a CQ q₁ is contained in a CQ q₂ iff there is a homomorphism from q₂ to q₁. However, when extending conjunctive queries with safe base negation (CQ^¬), this test becomes incomplete, hence, requiring significantly more expensive procedures due to its inherently harder complexity (Π₂^P-hard). In this paper, we define and study the classes CQ^{1¬}_{HT} and CQ^{¬}_{HT}: the classes of conjunctive queries extended with one or several safe negated atoms that satisfy the Homomorphism Theorem, and hence, whose containment check is in NP. To characterise them, we define what we call the dependency-version of a query, which is a dependency that, intuitively, models the databases in which the query is false. It turns out that, when the query q contains one (several) negated atom(s), the query satisfies the Homomorphism Theorem iff its tgd(ded)-version is uniformly one-bounded. We also show that CQ^¬_{HT} membership is EXPTIME-hard, but its complexity reduces to Π₂^P in the CQ^{1¬}_{HT} case, and to NP when bounding the number of positive atoms that can unify with the negated one.

The Unification Type of an Equational Theory May Depend on the Instantiation Preorder

Authors: Franz Baader and Oliver Fernández Gil

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 337, 10th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2025)

Abstract
The unification type of an equational theory is defined using a preorder on substitutions, called the instantiation preorder, whose scope is either restricted to the variables occurring in the unification problem, or unrestricted such that all variables are considered. It has been known for more than three decades that the unification type of an equational theory may vary, depending on which instantiation preorder is used. More precisely, it was shown in 1991 that the theory ACUI of an associative, commutative, and idempotent binary function symbol with a unit is unitary w.r.t. the restricted instantiation preorder, but not unitary w.r.t. the unrestricted one. In 2016 this result was strengthened by showing that the unrestricted type of this theory also cannot be finitary. Here, we considerably improve on this result by proving that ACUI is infinitary w.r.t. the unrestricted instantiation preorder, thus precluding type zero. We also show that, w.r.t. this preorder, the unification type of ACU (where idempotency is removed from the axioms) and of AC (where additionally the unit is removed) is infinitary, though it is respectively unitary and finitary in the restricted case. In the other direction, we prove (using the example of unification in the description logic EL) that the unification type may actually improve from type zero to infinitary when switching from the restricted instantiation preorder to the unrestricted one. In addition, we establish some general results on the relationship between the two instantiation preorders.

Database Theory in Action: Making Provenance and Probabilistic Database Theory Work in Practice (Invited Talk)

Authors: Silviu Maniu and Pierre Senellart

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 328, 28th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2025)

Abstract
There has been a rich literature in database theory on how to model and manage the provenance of data (for instance using the semiring framework) and its uncertainty (in particular via probabilistic databases). In this article, we explain how these results have been used as the basis for practical implementations, notably in the ProvSQL system, and how these implementations need to be adapted for the efficient management of provenance and probability for real-world data.

Logics for Conceptual Data Modelling: A Review

Authors: Pablo R. Fillottrani and C. Maria Keet

Published in: TGDK, Volume 2, Issue 1 (2024): Special Issue on Trends in Graph Data and Knowledge - Part 2. Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 2, Issue 1

Abstract
Information modelling for databases and object-oriented information systems avails of conceptual data modelling languages such as EER and UML Class Diagrams. Many attempts exist to add logical rigour to them, for various reasons and with disparate strengths. In this paper we aim to provide a structured overview of the many efforts. We focus on aims, approaches to the formalisation, including key dimensions of choice points, popular logics used, and the main relevant reasoning services. We close with current challenges and research directions.

Query Stability in Monotonic Data-Aware Business Processes

Authors: Ognjen Savkovic, Elisa Marengo, and Werner Nutt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 48, 19th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2016)

Abstract
Organizations continuously accumulate data, often according to some business processes. If one poses a query over such data for decision support, it is important to know whether the query is stable, that is, whether the answers will stay the same or may change in the future because business processes may add further data. We investigate query stability for conjunctive queries. To this end, we define a formalism that combines an explicit representation of the control flow of a process with a specification of how data is read and inserted into the database. We consider different restrictions of the process model and the state of the system, such as negation in conditions, cyclic executions, read access to written data, presence of pending process instances, and the possibility to start fresh process instances. We identify for which restriction combinations stability of conjunctive queries is decidable and provide encodings into variants of Datalog that are optimal with respect to the worst-case complexity of the problem.
