Abstract
In the orthogonal skyline range counting (resp. reporting) problem we store the set of points P in a data structure so that for any query range Q the number of points (resp. the list of all points) on the skyline of Q∩ P can be found efficiently. In this paper we study two-dimensional range counting and reporting problems in the case when the query range is bounded on three sides. We describe a linear-space data structure that answers top-open three-sided skyline counting queries in O(log log N) time, where N is the number of points stored in the data structure. We also show that bottom-open three-sided skyline counting queries are as difficult as general four-sided queries and any data structure that uses O(Nlog^c N) space for a constant c requires Ω(log N/log log N) time to answer such queries. Next, we turn to skyline color range queries. In this variant of the problem each point in P is assigned a color and we must count (resp. report) the distinct colors of point on the skyline of Q∩ P. We describe an O(N)-space data structure that answers top-open three-sided color counting queries in O(log N/log log N) time. Finally, we study top-open three-sided skyline color reporting in the EM model and describe a data structure that uses linear space and answers queries in O(k/B+1) I/Os where k is the number of colors on the skyline. This is the first external-memory data structure with optimal query cost and space usage for this problem.

BWT Indexes for Optimal Joins in Graph Databases

Authors: Diego Arroyuelo and Gonzalo Navarro

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 131, The Expanding World of Compressed Data: A Festschrift for Giovanni Manzini's 60th Birthday (2025)

Abstract
Graph databases represent data as a labeled directed graph, where the labels refer to properties that connect the entities represented by their source and target vertices. Queries feature, most prominently, sets of edges where source, target, and/or label can be variables; each instantiation of the variables where all the edges occur in the graph is a solution to the query. Worst-case-optimal algorithms to solve those queries have been devised, but they pose significant space requirements. This overhead has hindered the adoption of worst-case-optimal algorithms in real systems. We show that a representation of the graph based on the extended BWT (eBWT), where each edge is seen as an independent string of length 3 (source, label, target) supports worst-case-optimal algorithms while using almost no extra space on top of the raw data. We then show how the idea is generalized to the relational model, where the strings can be longer than 3 and several eBWTs are needed to obtain worst-case optimality. The aim to minimize the amount of space in that case leads to consider novel eBWT variants, where columns other than the last can be chosen. Finally, we show how the same graph representation can be used to solve other typical queries, like finding graph paths that match regular expressions.

Optimal Static Fully Indexable Dictionaries

Authors: Jingxun Liang and Renfei Zhou

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Fully indexable dictionaries (FID) store sets of integer keys while supporting rank/select queries. They serve as basic building blocks in many succinct data structures. Despite the great importance of FIDs, no known FID is succinct with efficient query time when the universe size U is a large polynomial in the number of keys n, which is the conventional parameter regime for dictionary problems. In this paper, we design an FID that uses log binom(U,n) + n/((log U/t)^{Ω(t)}) bits of space, and answers rank/select queries in O(t + log log n) time in the worst case, for any parameter 1 ≤ t ≤ log n / log log n, provided U = n^{1 + Θ(1)}. This time-space trade-off matches known lower bounds for FIDs [Pǎtraşcu and Thorup, 2006; Pǎtraşcu and Viola, 2010; Viola, 2023] when t ≤ log^{0.99} n. Our techniques also lead to efficient succinct data structures for the fundamental problem of maintaining n integers each of 𝓁 = Θ(log n) bits and supporting partial-sum queries, with a trade-off between O(t) query time and n𝓁 + n / (log n / t)^{Ω(t)} bits of space. Prior to this work, no known data structure for the partial-sum problem achieves constant query time with n 𝓁 + o(n) bits of space usage.

Optimal Joins Using Compact Data Structures

Authors: Gonzalo Navarro, Juan L. Reutter, and Javiel Rojas-Ledesma

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 155, 23rd International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2020)

Abstract
Worst-case optimal join algorithms have gained a lot of attention in the database literature. We now count with several algorithms that are optimal in the worst case, and many of them have been implemented and validated in practice. However, the implementation of these algorithms often requires an enhanced indexing structure: to achieve optimality we either need to build completely new indexes, or we must populate the database with several instantiations of indexes such as B+-trees. Either way, this means spending an extra amount of storage space that may be non-negligible. We show that optimal algorithms can be obtained directly from a representation that regards the relations as point sets in variable-dimensional grids, without the need of extra storage. Our representation is a compact quadtree for the static indexes, and a dynamic quadtree sharing subtrees (which we dub a qdag) for intermediate results. We develop a compositional algorithm to process full join queries under this representation, and show that the running time of this algorithm is worst-case optimal in data complexity. Remarkably, we can extend our framework to evaluate more expressive queries from relational algebra by introducing a lazy version of qdags (lqdags). Once again, we can show that the running time of our algorithms is worst-case optimal.
