Abstract
This work initiates the study of memory–query tradeoffs for graph problems, with a focus on correlation clustering. Correlation clustering asks for a partition of the vertices that minimizes disagreements: non‑edges inside clusters plus edges across clusters. Our first result is a tight query lower bound: to output a partition whose cost approximates the optimum up to an additive error of ε n², any algorithm requires Ω(n/ε²) adjacency-matrix queries. Under memory constraints, we show that even for the seemingly easier task of approximating the optimal clustering cost (without producing a partition), any algorithm in the random query model must make ≫ n/ε² adjacency-matrix queries. Finally, we prove the first general graph model query lower bound for correlation clustering, where algorithms are allowed adjacency-matrix, neighbor, and degree queries. The latter two bounds are not yet tight, leaving room for sharper results.

Optimal Online Bipartite Matching in Degree-2 Graphs

Abstract
Online bipartite matching is a classical problem in online algorithms and we know that both the deterministic fractional and randomized integral online matchings achieve the same competitive ratio of 1-1/e. In this work, we study classes of graphs where the online degree is restricted to 2. As expected, one can achieve a competitive ratio of better than 1-1/e in both the deterministic fractional and randomized integral cases, but surprisingly, these ratios are not the same. It was already known that for fractional matching, a 0.75 competitive ratio algorithm is optimal. We show that the folklore Half-Half algorithm achieves a competitive ratio of η ≈ 0.717772… and more surprisingly, show that this is optimal by giving a matching lower-bound. This yields a separation between the two problems: deterministic fractional and randomized integral, showing that it is impossible to obtain a perfect rounding scheme.

A New Impossibility Result for Online Bipartite Matching Problems

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Online Bipartite Matching with random user arrival is a fundamental problem in the online advertisement ecosystem. Over the last 30 years, many algorithms and impossibility results have been developed for this problem. In particular, the latest impossibility result was established by Manshadi, Oveis Gharan and Saberi [Manshadi et al., 2011] in 2011. Since then, several algorithms have been published in an effort to narrow the gap between the upper and the lower bounds on the competitive ratio. In this paper we show that no algorithm can achieve a competitive ratio better than 1- e/(e^e) = 0.82062…, improving upon the 0.823 upper bound presented in [Manshadi et al., 2011]. Our construction is simple to state, accompanied by a fully analytic proof, and yields a competitive ratio bound intriguingly similar to 1 - 1/e, the optimal competitive ratio for the fully adversarial Online Bipartite Matching problem. Although the tightness of our upper bound remains an open question, we show that our construction is extremal in a natural class of instances.

Symmetric Sparse Boolean Matrix Factorization and Applications

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 215, 13th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2022)

Abstract
In this work, we study a variant of nonnegative matrix factorization where we wish to find a symmetric factorization of a given input matrix into a sparse, Boolean matrix. Formally speaking, given {𝐌} ∈ {ℤ}^{m× m}, we want to find {𝐖} ∈ {0,1}^{m× r} such that ‖ {𝐌} - {𝐖} {𝐖}^⊤ ‖₀ is minimized among all {𝐖} for which each row is k-sparse. This question turns out to be closely related to a number of questions like recovering a hypergraph from its line graph, as well as reconstruction attacks for private neural network training. As this problem is hard in the worst-case, we study a natural average-case variant that arises in the context of these reconstruction attacks: {𝐌} = {𝐖} {𝐖}^{⊤} for {𝐖} a random Boolean matrix with k-sparse rows, and the goal is to recover {𝐖} up to column permutation. Equivalently, this can be thought of as recovering a uniformly random k-uniform hypergraph from its line graph. Our main result is a polynomial-time algorithm for this problem based on bootstrapping higher-order information about {𝐖} and then decomposing an appropriate tensor. The key ingredient in our analysis, which may be of independent interest, is to show that such a matrix {𝐖} has full column rank with high probability as soon as m = Ω̃(r), which we do using tools from Littlewood-Offord theory and estimates for binary Krawtchouk polynomials.

Streaming Hardness of Unique Games

Authors: Venkatesan Guruswami and Runzhou Tao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 145, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2019)

Abstract
We study the problem of approximating the value of a Unique Game instance in the streaming model. A simple count of the number of constraints divided by p, the alphabet size of the Unique Game, gives a trivial p-approximation that can be computed in O(log n) space. Meanwhile, with high probability, a sample of O~(n) constraints suffices to estimate the optimal value to (1+epsilon) accuracy. We prove that any single-pass streaming algorithm that achieves a (p-epsilon)-approximation requires Omega_epsilon(sqrt n) space. Our proof is via a reduction from lower bounds for a communication problem that is a p-ary variant of the Boolean Hidden Matching problem studied in the literature. Given the utility of Unique Games as a starting point for reduction to other optimization problems, our strong hardness for approximating Unique Games could lead to downstream hardness results for streaming approximability for other CSP-like problems.
