Semirandom Planted Bipartite Subgraphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
There have been many recent works studying planted subgraphs problems. The semirandom planted bipartite subgraph problem is defined as follows. Starting with a vertex set V, an arbitrary subset S ⊂ V of size k is chosen, then an arbitrary bipartite graph is added on S. After this between each pair of vertices in S × (V ⧵ S) an edge is added independently with probability p, then an arbitrary graph is added on V⧵ S. The analogous semirandom planted clique problem, where S forms a clique, has been studied starting with the work of Fiege and Kilian [Uriel Feige and Joe Kilian, 2001]; recent work by [Blasiok et al., 2024; Venkatesan Guruswami and Hsin-Po Wang, 2025] gave an algorithm for this problem when k = Ω(√{n log n}). We give an algorithm for semirandom planted bipartite subgraph problem when k = Ω(√{n log n}) and the two color classes are roughly balanced. Our algorithms are essentially the same as the elegant greedy algorithm of [Blasiok et al., 2024]. We generalize their idea to our setting. Handling the arbitrary nature of the bipartite graph requires some new technical ideas and is our main technical contribution.

Query Lower Bounds for Correlation Clustering Under Memory Constraints

Authors: Sumegha Garg, Songhua He, and Periklis A. Papakonstantinou

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
This work initiates the study of memory–query tradeoffs for graph problems, with a focus on correlation clustering. Correlation clustering asks for a partition of the vertices that minimizes disagreements: non‑edges inside clusters plus edges across clusters. Our first result is a tight query lower bound: to output a partition whose cost approximates the optimum up to an additive error of ε n², any algorithm requires Ω(n/ε²) adjacency-matrix queries. Under memory constraints, we show that even for the seemingly easier task of approximating the optimal clustering cost (without producing a partition), any algorithm in the random query model must make ≫ n/ε² adjacency-matrix queries. Finally, we prove the first general graph model query lower bound for correlation clustering, where algorithms are allowed adjacency-matrix, neighbor, and degree queries. The latter two bounds are not yet tight, leaving room for sharper results.

Monitoring the Structural Health of Space Habitats Through Immersive Data Art Visualization

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
As humanity advances toward long-term space habitation, traditional SHM systems - reliant on abstract data representations - struggle to support rapid decision-making in extreme environments. This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an engineering-art-human factors framework that transforms SHM through immersive data-art visualization. By integrating sensor networks and machine learning, structural data (stress, vibration, deformation) is converted into intuitive visual languages: dynamic color gradients and biomimetic morphologies leverage perceptual laws (e.g., Weber-Fechner) to amplify critical signals. Multimodal interfaces (AR, haptic feedback) and natural elements mitigate cognitive load and psychological stress in confined habitats. Our contribution lies in redefining SHM as a synergy of precision and intuition, enabling "at-a-glance" assessments while balancing functionality and human-centric design. The urgency of this research stems from the inadequacy of conventional systems in extreme space conditions and the growing demand for astronaut safety and operational efficiency. This framework not only pioneers a sustainable monitoring paradigm for space habitats but also extends to terrestrial high-risk infrastructure, demonstrating the necessity of interdisciplinary innovation in extreme environments.

RANDOM
Capacity-Achieving Gray Codes

Authors: Venkatesan Guruswami and Hsin-Po Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 317, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2024)

Abstract
To ensure differential privacy, one can reveal an integer fuzzily in two ways: (a) add some Laplace noise to the integer, or (b) encode the integer as a binary string and add iid BSC noise. The former is simple and natural while the latter is flexible and affordable, especially when one wants to reveal a sparse vector of integers. In this paper, we propose an implementation of (b) that achieves the capacity of the BSC with positive error exponents. Our implementation adds error-correcting functionality to Gray codes by mimicking how software updates back up the files that are getting updated ("coded Gray code"). In contrast, the old implementation of (b) interpolates between codewords of a black-box error-correcting code ("Grayed code").

RANDOM
Accelerating Polarization via Alphabet Extension

Authors: Iwan Duursma, Ryan Gabrys, Venkatesan Guruswami, Ting-Chun Lin, and Hsin-Po Wang

Abstract
Polarization is an unprecedented coding technique in that it not only achieves channel capacity, but also does so at a faster speed of convergence than any other technique. This speed is measured by the "scaling exponent" and its importance is three-fold. Firstly, estimating the scaling exponent is challenging and demands a deeper understanding of the dynamics of communication channels. Secondly, scaling exponents serve as a benchmark for different variants of polar codes that helps us select the proper variant for real-life applications. Thirdly, the need to optimize for the scaling exponent sheds light on how to reinforce the design of polar code. In this paper, we generalize the binary erasure channel (BEC), the simplest communication channel and the protagonist of many polar code studies, to the "tetrahedral erasure channel" (TEC). We then invoke Mori-Tanaka’s 2 × 2 matrix over 𝔽_4 to construct polar codes over TEC. Our main contribution is showing that the dynamic of TECs converges to an almost-one-parameter family of channels, which then leads to an upper bound of 3.328 on the scaling exponent. This is the first non-binary matrix whose scaling exponent is upper-bounded. It also polarizes BEC faster than all known binary matrices up to 23 × 23 in size. Our result indicates that expanding the alphabet is a more effective and practical alternative to enlarging the matrix in order to achieve faster polarization.
