Searching for an Eventually-Emerging Black Hole in Rings

Abstract
We study a novel variant of the Black Hole Search (BHS) problem where the black hole, a node that silently destroys visiting agents, can appear at any time during execution, rather than being present initially, as is assumed in all previous work. Our focus is on ring networks, and we examine this variant of the BHS problem under various assumptions, including whether the ring size is known and whether agents can use pebbles for marking nodes. For synchronous agents, we provide four solutions: (1) a 4-agent algorithm for rings without additional assumptions, (2) a 3-agent algorithm assuming known ring size, (3) a 3-agent algorithm using pebbles, and (4) a 3-agent solution without additional assumptions but having a quadratic time complexity. For asynchronous agents, we develop two algorithms: one using n agents without additional assumptions, and another using only 4 agents with pebbles.

77 Shades of Grey

Abstract
Bruce Wayne contacted us to help him develop a new surveillance technology for dark environments such as caves, using a swarm of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), called Batdroids. A Batdroid has no chirality, limited visibility, and a perfect clock to synchronize with the others. A Batdroid can produce 77 shades of grey in dark mode and four colors in light mode. In this paper, we propose two algorithms using three Batdroids to perpetually explore a finite 3D grid modeling a cave. The first algorithm operates in darkness, uses 77 shades of grey, and requires visibility range one. The second operates in light, uses four colors and visibility range two. We also prove that three is the optimal number of Batdroids required to solve Bruce Wayne’s challenge.

List Coloring Ordered Graphs with Forbidden Induced Subgraphs

Abstract
In the List k-Coloring problem we are given a graph whose every vertex is equipped with a list, which is a subset of {1,…,k}. We need to decide if G admits a proper coloring, where every vertex receives a color from its list. The complexity of the problem in classes defined by forbidding induced subgraphs is a widely studied topic in algorithmic graph theory. Recently, Hajebi, Li, and Spirkl [SIAM J. Discr. Math. 38 (2024)] initiated the study of List 3-Coloring in ordered graphs, i.e., graphs with fixed linear ordering of vertices. Forbidding ordered induced subgraphs allows us to investigate the boundary of tractability more closely. We continue this direction of research, focusing mostly on the case of List 4-Coloring. We present several algorithmic and hardness results, which altogether provide an almost complete dichotomy for classes defined by forbidding one fixed ordered graph: our investigations leave one minimal open case.

Mobile Byzantine Agreement in a Trusted World

Abstract
In this paper, we address the Byzantine Agreement problem in synchronous systems where Byzantine agents can move from process to process, corrupting their host. We focus on two representative models: Garay’s and Buhrman’s models. In Garay’s model, when a process has been left by the Byzantine agent, it enters a cured state, is aware of its condition, and can remain silent for a round to prevent the dissemination of incorrect information. In Buhrman’s model, a Byzantine agent moves together with the message. It has been shown that solving Byzantine Agreement requires at least 4t + 1 processes in Garay’s model, and at least 3t + 1 in Buhrman’s model. In this paper, we aim to increase the tolerance to mobile Byzantine agents by integrating a trusted counter abstraction into both models. This abstraction prevents nodes from equivocating. In the new models, we prove that at least 3t+1, respectively 2t+1 processors are needed to tolerate t mobile Byzantine agents. Furthermore, we propose novel Mobile Byzantine Agreement algorithms that match these new lower bounds for both Garay’s and Buhrman’s models, achieving agreement in 𝒪(n) synchronous rounds.

Isometric-Universal Graphs for Trees

Abstract
We consider the problem of finding the smallest graph that contains two input trees each with at most n vertices preserving their distances. In other words, we look for an isometric-universal graph with the minimum number of vertices for two given trees. We prove that this problem can be solved in time O(n^{5/2}log{n}). We extend this result to forests instead of trees, and propose an algorithm with running time O(n^{7/2}log{n}). As a key ingredient, we show that a smallest isometric-universal graph of two trees essentially is a tree. Furthermore, we prove that these results cannot be extended. Firstly, we show that deciding whether there exists an isometric-universal graph with t vertices for three forests is NP-complete. Secondly, we show that any smallest isometric-universal graph cannot be a tree for some families of three trees. This latter result has implications for greedy strategies solving the smallest isometric-universal graph problem.

Omega-Regular Verification and Control for Distributional Specifications in MDPs

Abstract
A classical approach to studying Markov decision processes (MDPs) is to view them as state transformers. However, MDPs can also be viewed as distribution transformers, where an MDP under a strategy generates a sequence of probability distributions over MDP states. This view arises in several applications, even as the probabilistic model checking problem becomes much harder compared to the classical state transformer counterpart. It is known that even distributional reachability and safety problems become computationally intractable (Skolem- and positivity-hard). To address this challenge, recent works focused on sound but possibly incomplete methods for verification and control of MDPs under the distributional view. However, existing automated methods are applicable only to distributional reachability, safety and reach-avoidance specifications. In this work, we present the first automated method for verification and control of MDPs with respect to distributional omega-regular specifications. To achieve this, we propose a novel notion of distributional certificates, which are sound and complete proof rules for proving that an MDP under a distributionally memoryless strategy satisfies some distributional omega-regular specification. We then use our distributional certificates to design the first fully automated algorithms for verification and control of MDPs with respect to distributional omega-regular specifications. Our algorithms follow a template-based synthesis approach and provide soundness and relative completeness guarantees, while running in PSPACE. Our prototype implementation demonstrates practical applicability of our algorithms to challenging examples collected from the literature.

Swarms of Mobile Robots: Towards Versatility with Safety

Abstract
We present Pactole, a formal framework to design and prove the correctness of protocols (or the impossibility of their existence) that target mobile robotic swarms. Unlike previous approaches, our methodology unifies in a single formalism the execution model, the problem specification, the protocol, and its proof of correctness. The Pactole framework makes use of the Coq proof assistant, and is specially targeted at protocol designers and problem specifiers, so that a common unambiguous language is used from the very early stages of protocol development. We stress the underlying framework design principles to enable high expressivity and modularity, and provide concrete examples about how the Pactole framework can be used to tackle actual problems, some previously addressed by the Distributed Computing community, but also new problems, while being certified correct.

Model Checking of Robot Gathering

Abstract
Recent advances in distributed computing highlight models and algorithms for autonomous mo- bile robots that self-organize and cooperate together in order to solve a global objective. As results, a large number of algorithms have been proposed. These algorithms are given together with proofs to assess their correctness. However, those proofs are informal, which are error prone. This paper presents our study on formal verification of mobile robot algorithms. We first propose a formal model for mobile robot algorithms on anonymous ring shape network under multiplicity and asynchrony assumptions. We specify this formal model in Maude, a specification and pro- gramming language based on rewriting logic. We then use its model checker to formally verify an algorithm for robot gathering problem on ring enjoys some desired properties. As the result of the model checking, counterexamples have been found. We detect the sources of some unforeseen design errors. We, furthermore, give our interpretations of these errors.
