Multi-League Sports Scheduling with Team Interdependencies: An Optimization Model

Authors: Nils Weidmann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 340, 31st International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2025)

Abstract
Every year, a large number of matches must be scheduled for professional and amateur sports teams. Several constraints have to be considered, including the overall capacity of venues and interdependencies between teams of the same club. As interdependent teams of a club play in different leagues, finding an optimal solution is very challenging for practitioners. While the problem of respecting capacity restrictions is well-addressed in prior work, interdependencies between teams are widely neglected, despite being a problem of major importance in practice. This paper enhances the formal definition of the multi-league-sports scheduling problem to take team interdependencies into account. We create an optimization problem to be solved by means of integer linear programming, and prove the corresponding decision problem to be NP-complete by a polynomial reduction from 3-SAT. An implementation which was used to schedule German table tennis leagues of a certain district demonstrates the practical applicability of the approach.

Whelk: An OWL EL+RL Reasoner Enabling New Use Cases

Authors: James P. Balhoff and Christopher J. Mungall

Published in: TGDK, Volume 2, Issue 2 (2024): Special Issue on Resources for Graph Data and Knowledge. Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 2, Issue 2

Abstract
Many tasks in the biosciences rely on reasoning with large OWL terminologies (Tboxes), often combined with even larger databases. In particular, a common task is retrieval queries that utilize relational expressions; for example, “find all genes expressed in the brain or any part of the brain”. Automated reasoning on these ontologies typically relies on scalable reasoners targeting the EL subset of OWL, such as ELK. While the introduction of ELK has been transformative in the incorporation of reasoning into bio-ontology quality control and production pipelines, we have encountered limitations when applying it to use cases involving high throughput query answering or reasoning about datasets describing instances (Aboxes). Whelk is a fast OWL reasoner for combined EL+RL reasoning. As such, it is particularly useful for many biological ontology tasks, particularly those characterized by large Tboxes using the EL subset of OWL, combined with Aboxes targeting the RL subset of OWL. Whelk is implemented in Scala and utilizes immutable functional data structures, which provides advantages when performing incremental or dynamic reasoning tasks. Whelk supports querying complex class expressions at a substantially greater rate than ELK, and can answer queries or perform incremental reasoning tasks in parallel, enabling novel applications of OWL reasoning.

Energy Scalability and the RESUME Scalable Video Codec

Authors: Harald Devos, Hendrik Eeckhaut, Mark Christiaens, and Dirk Stroobandt

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 7041, Power-aware Computing Systems (2007)

Abstract
In the context of the RESUME-project a scalable wavelet-based video decoder was built to demonstrate the benefits of reconfigurable hardware for scalable applications. emph{Scalable} video means that the quality of service (QoS), i.e., the frame rate, resolution, color depth, ldots of the decoded video can easily be changed by only decoding those parts of the video stream that contribute to the desired QoS. With the emergence of high-performance FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array), both the required performance for real-time decoding and flexibility, by allowing reconfiguration, are offered. Since the amount of calculations scales with the QoS, energy dissipation is expected to scale similarly. To investigate the relation between QoS and energy dissipation we actually measured the energy dissipation of a scalable video decoder implementation on a FPGA. The measurements show how dissipation effectively scales with the QoS, but also depends on the decoded data and the used design method. This is illustrated by comparing two different implementations of the inverse discrete wavelet transform (IDWT).
