Abstract
Enumerative kernelization is a recent and promising area sitting at the intersection of parameterized complexity and enumeration algorithms. Its study began with the paper of Creignou et al. [Theory Comput. Syst., 2017], and development in the area has started to accelerate with the work of Golovach et al. [J. Comput. Syst. Sci., 2022]. The latter introduced polynomial-delay enumeration kernels and applied them in the study of structural parameterizations of the Matching Cut problem and some variants. Few other results, mostly on Longest Path and some generalizations of Matching Cut, have also been developed. However, little success has been seen in enumeration versions of Vertex Cover and Feedback Vertex Set, some of the most studied problems in kernelization. In this paper, we address this shortcoming. Our first result is a polynomial-delay enumeration kernel with 2k vertices for Enum Vertex Cover, where we wish to list all solutions with at most k vertices. This is obtained by developing a non-trivial lifting algorithm for the classical crown decomposition reduction rule, and directly improves upon the kernel with 𝒪(k²) vertices derived from the work of Creignou et al. Our other result is a polynomial-delay enumeration kernel with 𝒪(k³) vertices and edges for Enum Feedback Vertex Set; the proof is inspired by some ideas of Thomassé [TALG, 2010], but with a weaker bound on the kernel size due to difficulties in applying the q-expansion technique.

The Tape Reconfiguration Problem and Its Consequences for Dominating Set Reconfiguration

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
A dominating set of a graph G = (V,E) is a set of vertices D ⊆ V whose closed neighborhood is V, i.e., N[D] = V. We view a dominating set as a collection of tokens placed on the vertices of D. In the token sliding variant of the Dominating Set Reconfiguration problem (TS-DSR), we seek to transform a source dominating set into a target dominating set in G by sliding tokens along edges, and while maintaining a dominating set all along the transformation. TS-DSR is known to be PSPACE-complete even restricted to graphs of pathwidth w, for some non-explicit constant w and to be XL-complete parameterized by the size k of the solution. The first contribution of this article consists in using a novel approach to provide the first explicit constant for which the TS-DSR problem is PSPACE-complete, a question that was left open in the literature. From a parameterized complexity perspective, the token jumping variant of DSR, i.e., where tokens can jump to arbitrary vertices, is known to be FPT when parameterized by the size of the dominating sets on nowhere dense classes of graphs. But, in contrast, no non-trivial result was known about TS-DSR. We prove that DSR is actually much harder in the sliding model since it is XL-complete when restricted to bounded pathwidth graphs and even when parameterized by k plus the feedback vertex set number of the graph. This gives, for the first time, a difference of behavior between the complexity under token sliding and token jumping for some problem on graphs of bounded treewidth. All our results are obtained using a brand new method, based on the hardness of the so-called Tape Reconfiguration problem, a problem we believe to be of independent interest. We complement these hardness results with a positive result showing that DSR (parameterized by k) in the sliding model is FPT on planar graphs, also answering an open problem from the literature.

Lossy Kernels for Connected Dominating Set on Sparse Graphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 96, 35th Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2018)

Abstract
For alpha > 1, an alpha-approximate (bi-)kernel for a problem Q is a polynomial-time algorithm that takes as input an instance (I, k) of Q and outputs an instance (I',k') (of a problem Q') of size bounded by a function of k such that, for every c >= 1, a c-approximate solution for the new instance can be turned into a (c alpha)-approximate solution of the original instance in polynomial time. This framework of lossy kernelization was recently introduced by Lokshtanov et al. We study Connected Dominating Set (and its distance-r variant) parameterized by solution size on sparse graph classes like biclique-free graphs, classes of bounded expansion, and nowhere dense classes. We prove that for every alpha > 1, Connected Dominating Set admits a polynomial-size alpha-approximate (bi-)kernel on all the aforementioned classes. Our results are in sharp contrast to the kernelization complexity of Connected Dominating Set, which is known to not admit a polynomial kernel even on 2-degenerate graphs and graphs of bounded expansion, unless NP \subseteq coNP/poly. We complement our results by the following conditional lower bound. We show that if a class C is somewhere dense and closed under taking subgraphs, then for some value of r \in N there cannot exist an alpha-approximate bi-kernel for the (Connected) Distance-r Dominating Set problem on C for any alpha > 1 (assuming the Gap Exponential Time Hypothesis).

Abstract
We study the Steiner Tree problem, in which a set of terminal vertices needs to be connected in the cheapest possible way in an edge-weighted graph. This problem has been extensively studied from the viewpoint of approximation and also parametrization. In particular, on one hand Steiner Tree is known to be APX-hard, and W[2]-hard on the other, if parameterized by the number of non-terminals (Steiner vertices) in the optimum solution. In contrast to this we give an efficient parameterized approximation scheme (EPAS), which circumvents both hardness results. Moreover, our methods imply the existence of a polynomial size approximate kernelization scheme (PSAKS) for the considered parameter. We further study the parameterized approximability of other variants of Steiner Tree, such as Directed Steiner Tree and Steiner Forest. For neither of these an EPAS is likely to exist for the studied parameter: for Steiner Forest an easy observation shows that the problem is APX-hard, even if the input graph contains no Steiner vertices. For Directed Steiner Tree we prove that computing a constant approximation for this parameter is W[1]-hard. Nevertheless, we show that an EPAS exists for Unweighted Directed Steiner Tree. Also we prove that there is an EPAS and a PSAKS for Steiner Forest if in addition to the number of Steiner vertices, the number of connected components of an optimal solution is considered to be a parameter.

A 2lk Kernel for l-Component Order Connectivity

Authors: Mithilesh Kumar and Daniel Lokshtanov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 63, 11th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2016)

Abstract
In the l-Component Order Connectivity problem (l in N), we are given a graph G on n vertices, m edges and a non-negative integer k and asks whether there exists a set of vertices S subseteq V(G) such that |S| <= k and the size of the largest connected component in G-S is at most l. In this paper, we give a kernel for l-Component Order Connectivity with at most 2*l*k vertices that takes n^{O(l)} time for every constant l. On the way to obtaining our kernel, we prove a generalization of the q-Expansion Lemma to weighted graphs. This generalization may be of independent interest.

Faster Exact and Parameterized Algorithm for Feedback Vertex Set in Bipartite Tournaments

Authors: Mithilesh Kumar and Daniel Lokshtanov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 65, 36th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2016)

Abstract
A bipartite tournament is a directed graph T:=(A cup B, E) such that every pair of vertices (a,b), a in A, b in B are connected by an arc, and no arc connects two vertices of A or two vertices of B. A feedback vertex set is a set S of vertices in T such that T - S is acyclic. In this article we consider the Feedback Vertex Set problem in bipartite tournaments. Here the input is a bipartite tournament T on n vertices together with an integer k, and the task is to determine whether T has a feedback vertex set of size at most k. We give a new algorithm for Feedback Vertex Set in Bipartite Tournaments. The running time of our algorithm is upper-bounded by O(1.6181^k + n^{O(1)}), improving over the previously best known algorithm with running time (2^k)k^{O(1)} + n^{O(1)} [Hsiao, ISAAC 2011]. As a by-product, we also obtain the fastest currently known exact exponential-time algorithm for the problem, with running time O(1.3820^n).

Faster Exact and Parameterized Algorithm for Feedback Vertex Set in Tournaments

Authors: Mithilesh Kumar and Daniel Lokshtanov

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 47, 33rd Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2016)

Abstract
A tournament is a directed graph T such that every pair of vertices is connected by an arc. A feedback vertex set is a set S of vertices in T such that T\S is acyclic. In this article we consider the FEEDBACK VERTEX SET problem in tournaments. Here the input is a tournament T and an integer k, and the task is to determine whether T has a feedback vertex set of size at most k. We give a new algorithm for FEEDBACK VERTEX SET IN TOURNAMENTS. The running time of our algorithm is upper-bounded by O(1.6181^k + n^{O(1)}) and by O(1.466^n). Thus our algorithm simultaneously improves over the fastest known parameterized algorithm for the problem by Dom et al. running in time O(2^kk^{O(1)} + n^{O(1)}), and the fastest known exact exponential-time algorithm by Gaspers and Mnich with running time O(1.674^n). On the way to proving our main result we prove a strengthening of a special case of a graph partitioning theorem due to Bollobas and Scott. In particular we show that the vertices of any undirected m-edge graph of maximum degree d can be colored white or black in such a way that for each of the two colors, the number of edges with both endpoints of that color is between m/4-d/2 and m/4+d/2.
