FPT Approximations for Capacitated Sum of Radii and Diameters

Abstract
The Capacitated Sum of Radii problem involves partitioning a set of points P, where each point p ∈ P has capacity U_p, into k clusters that minimize the sum of cluster radii, such that the number of points in the cluster centered at point p is at most U_p. We begin by showing that the problem is APX-hard, and that under gap-ETH there is no parameterized approximation scheme (FPT-AS). We then construct a ≈5.83-approximation algorithm in FPT time (improving a previous ≈7.61 approximation in FPT time). Our results also hold when the objective is a general monotone symmetric norm of radii. We also improve the approximation factors for the uniform capacity case, and for the closely related problem of Capacitated Sum of Diameters.

Abstract
Sampling from multiple distributions so as to maximize overlap has been studied by statisticians since the 1950s. Since the 2000s, such correlated sampling from the probability simplex has been a powerful building block in disparate areas of theoretical computer science. We study a generalization of this problem to sampling sets from given vectors in the hypersimplex, i.e., outputting sets of size (at most) k ∈ [n], while maximizing the overlap of the sampled sets. Specifically, the expected difference between two output sets should be at most α times their input vectors' 𝓁₁ distance. A value of α = O(log n) is known to be achievable, due to Chen et al. (ICALP'17). We improve this factor to O(log k), independent of the ambient dimension n. Our algorithm satisfies other desirable properties, including (up to a log^* n factor) input-sparsity sampling time, logarithmic parallel depth and dynamic update time, as well as preservation of submodular objectives. Anticipating broader use of correlated sampling algorithms for the hypersimplex, we present applications of our algorithm to online paging, offline approximation of metric multi-labeling, and swift multi-scenario submodular welfare approximating reallocation.

New Results on a General Class of Minimum Norm Optimization Problems

Abstract
We study the general norm optimization for combinatorial problems, initiated by Chakrabarty and Swamy (STOC 2019). We propose a general formulation that captures a large class of combinatorial structures: we are given a set 𝒰 of n weighted elements and a family of feasible subsets ℱ. Each subset S ∈ ℱ is called a feasible solution/set of the problem. We denote the value vector by v = {v_i}_{i ∈ [n]}, where v_i ≥ 0 is the value of element i. For any subset S ⊆ 𝒰, we use v[S] to denote the n-dimensional vector {v_e⋅ 𝟏[e ∈ S]}_{e ∈ 𝒰} (i.e., we zero out all entries that are not in S). Let f: ℝⁿ → ℝ_+ be a symmetric monotone norm function. Our goal is to minimize the norm objective f(v[S]) over feasible subset S ∈ ℱ. The problem significantly generalizes the corresponding min-sum and min-max problems. We present a general equivalent reduction of the norm minimization problem to a multi-criteria optimization problem with logarithmic budget constraints, up to a constant approximation factor. Leveraging this reduction, we obtain constant factor approximation algorithms for the norm minimization versions of several covering problems, such as interval cover, multi-dimensional knapsack cover, and logarithmic factor approximation for set cover. We also study the norm minimization versions for perfect matching, s-t path and s-t cut. We show the natural linear programming relaxations for these problems have a large integrality gap. To complement the negative result, we show that, for perfect matching, it is possible to obtain a bi-criteria result: for any constant ε,δ > 0, we can find in polynomial time a nearly perfect matching (i.e., a matching that matches at least 1-ε proportion of vertices) and its cost is at most (8+δ) times of the optimum for perfect matching. Moreover, we establish the existence of a polynomial-time O(log log n)-approximation algorithm for the norm minimization variant of the s-t path problem. Specifically, our algorithm achieves an α-approximation with a time complexity of n^{O(log log n / α)}, where 9 ≤ α ≤ log log n.

Dimension-Free Parameterized Approximation Schemes for Hybrid Clustering

Authors: Ameet Gadekar and Tanmay Inamdar

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
Hybrid k-Clustering is a model of clustering that generalizes two of the most widely studied clustering objectives: k-Center and k-Median. In this model, given a set of n points P, the goal is to find k centers such that the sum of the r-distances of each point to its nearest center is minimized. The r-distance between two points p and q is defined as max{dist(p, q)-r, 0} - this represents the distance of p to the boundary of the r-radius ball around q if p is outside the ball, and 0 otherwise. This problem was recently introduced by Fomin et al. [APPROX 2024], who designed a (1+ε, 1+ε)-bicrtieria approximation that runs in time 2^{(kd/ε)^{O(1)}} ⋅ n^{O(1)} for inputs in ℝ^d; such a bicriteria solution uses balls of radius (1+ε)r instead of r, and has a cost at most 1+ε times the cost of an optimal solution using balls of radius r. In this paper we significantly improve upon this result by designing an approximation algorithm with the same bicriteria guarantee, but with running time that is FPT only in k and ε - crucially, removing the exponential dependence on the dimension d. This resolves an open question posed in their paper. Our results extend further in several directions. First, our approximation scheme works in a broader class of metric spaces, including doubling spaces, minor-free, and bounded treewidth metrics. Secondly, our techniques yield a similar bicriteria FPT-approximation schemes for other variants of Hybrid k-Clustering, e.g., when the objective features the sum of z-th power of the r-distances. Finally, we also design a coreset for Hybrid k-Clustering in doubling spaces, answering another open question from the work of Fomin et al.

An O(loglog n)-Approximation for Submodular Facility Location

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 297, 51st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2024)

Abstract
In the Submodular Facility Location problem (SFL) we are given a collection of n clients and m facilities in a metric space. A feasible solution consists of an assignment of each client to some facility. For each client, one has to pay the distance to the associated facility. Furthermore, for each facility f to which we assign the subset of clients S^f, one has to pay the opening cost g(S^f), where g() is a monotone submodular function with g(emptyset)=0. SFL is APX-hard since it includes the classical (metric uncapacitated) Facility Location problem (with uniform facility costs) as a special case. Svitkina and Tardos [SODA'06] gave the current-best O(log n) approximation algorithm for SFL. The same authors pose the open problem whether SFL admits a constant approximation and provide such an approximation for a very restricted special case of the problem. We make some progress towards the solution of the above open problem by presenting an O(loglog n) approximation. Our approach is rather flexible and can be easily extended to generalizations and variants of SFL. In more detail, we achieve the same approximation factor for the natural generalizations of SFL where the opening cost of each facility f is of the form p_f + g(S^f) or w_f * g(S^f), where p_f, w_f >= 0 are input values. We also obtain an improved approximation algorithm for the related Universal Stochastic Facility Location problem. In this problem one is given a classical (metric) facility location instance and has to a priori assign each client to some facility. Then a subset of active clients is sampled from some given distribution, and one has to pay (a posteriori) only the connection and opening costs induced by the active clients. The expected opening cost of each facility f can be modelled with a submodular function of the set of clients assigned to f.

Proportional Approval Voting, Harmonic k-median, and Negative Association

Authors: Jaroslaw Byrka, Piotr Skowron, and Krzysztof Sornat

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 107, 45th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2018)

Abstract
We study a generic framework that provides a unified view on two important classes of problems: (i) extensions of the k-median problem where clients are interested in having multiple facilities in their vicinity (e.g., due to the fact that, with some small probability, the closest facility might be malfunctioning and so might not be available for using), and (ii) finding winners according to some appealing multiwinner election rules, i.e., election system aimed for choosing representatives bodies, such as parliaments, based on preferences of a population of voters over individual candidates. Each problem in our framework is associated with a vector of weights: we show that the approximability of the problem depends on structural properties of these vectors. We specifically focus on the harmonic sequence of weights, since it results in particularly appealing properties of the considered problem. In particular, the objective function interpreted in a multiwinner election setup reflects to the well-known Proportional Approval Voting (PAV) rule. Our main result is that, due to the specific (harmonic) structure of weights, the problem allows constant factor approximation. This is surprising since the problem can be interpreted as a variant of the k-median problem where we do not assume that the connection costs satisfy the triangle inequality. To the best of our knowledge this is the first constant factor approximation algorithm for a variant of k-median that does not require this assumption. The algorithm we propose is based on dependent rounding [Srinivasan, FOCS'01] applied to the solution of a natural LP-relaxation of the problem. The rounding process is well known to produce distributions over integral solutions satisfying Negative Correlation (NC), which is usually sufficient for the analysis of approximation guarantees offered by rounding procedures. In our analysis, however, we need to use the fact that the carefully implemented rounding process satisfies a stronger property, called Negative Association (NA), which allows us to apply standard concentration bounds for conditional random variables.

Inequity Aversion Pricing over Social Networks: Approximation Algorithms and Hardness Results

Authors: Georgios Amanatidis, Evangelos Markakis, and Krzysztof Sornat

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 58, 41st International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2016)

Abstract
We study a revenue maximization problem in the context of social networks. Namely, we consider a model introduced by Alon, Mansour, and Tennenholtz (EC 2013) that captures inequity aversion, i.e., prices offered to neighboring vertices should not be significantly different. We first provide approximation algorithms for a natural class of instances, referred to as the class of single-value revenue functions. Our results improve on the current state of the art, especially when the number of distinct prices is small. This applies, for example, to settings where the seller will only consider a fixed number of discount types or special offers. We then resolve one of the open questions posed in Alon et al., by establishing APX-hardness for the problem. Surprisingly, we further show that the problem is NP-complete even when the price differences are allowed to be relatively large. Finally, we also provide some extensions of the model of Alon et al., regarding the allowed set of prices.
