String Diagrams for Closed Symmetric Monoidal Categories

Authors: Callum Reader and Alessandro Di Giorgio

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We introduce a graphical language for closed symmetric monoidal categories based on an extension of string diagrams with special bracket wires representing internal homs. These bracket wires make the structure of the internal hom functor explicit, allowing standard morphism wires to interact with them through a well-defined set of graphical rules. We establish the soundness and completeness of the diagrammatic calculus, and illustrate its expressiveness through examples drawn from category theory, logic and programming language semantics.

ε-Distance via Lévy-Prokhorov Lifting

Authors: Josée Desharnais and Ana Sokolova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
The most studied and accepted pseudometric for probabilistic processes is one based on the Kantorovich distance between distributions. It comes with many theoretical and motivating results, in particular it is the fixpoint of a given functional and defines a functor on (complete) pseudometric spaces. It is also the foundation for a categorical lifting of pseudometrics. Other notions of behavioural pseudometrics have also been proposed, one of them (ε-distance) based on ε-bisimulation. ε-Distance has the advantages that it is intuitively easy to understand, it relates systems that are conceptually close (for example, an imperfect implementation is close to its specification), and it comes equipped with a natural notion of ε-coupling. Finally, this distance is easy to compute. We show that ε-distance is also the greatest fixpoint of a functional and provides a functor. The latter is obtained by replacing the Kantorovich distance in the lifting functor with the Lévy-Prokhorov distance. In addition, we show that ε-couplings and ε-bisimulations have an appealing coalgebraic characterization.

Correspondences Between Codensity and Coupling-Based Liftings, a Practical Approach

Authors: Samuel Humeau, Daniela Petrisan, and Jurriaan Rot

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
The Kantorovich distance is a widely used metric between probability distributions. The Kantorovich-Rubinstein duality states that it can be defined in two equivalent ways: as a supremum, based on non-expansive functions into [0,1], and as an infimum, based on probabilistic couplings. Orthogonally, there are categorical generalisations of both presentations proposed in the literature, in the form of codensity liftings and what we refer to as coupling-based liftings. Both lift endofunctors on the category Set of sets and functions to that of pseudometric spaces, and both are parameterised by modalities from coalgebraic modal logic. A generalisation of the Kantorovich-Rubinstein duality has been more nebulous - it is known not to work in some cases. In this paper we propose a compositional approach for obtaining such generalised dualities for a class of functors, which is closed under coproducts and products. Our approach is based on an explicit construction of modalities and also applies to and extends known cases such as that of the powerset functor.

Functorial String Diagrams for Reverse-Mode Automatic Differentiation

Authors: Mario Alvarez-Picallo, Dan Ghica, David Sprunger, and Fabio Zanasi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 252, 31st EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2023)

Abstract
We formulate a reverse-mode automatic differentiation (RAD) algorithm for (applied) simply typed lambda calculus in the style of Pearlmutter and Siskind [Barak A. Pearlmutter and Jeffrey Mark Siskind, 2008], using the graphical formalism of string diagrams. Thanks to string diagram rewriting, we are able to formally prove for the first time the soundness of such an algorithm. Our approach requires developing a calculus of string diagrams with hierarchical features in the spirit of functorial boxes, in order to model closed monoidal (and cartesian closed) structure. To give an efficient yet principled implementation of the RAD algorithm, we use foliations of our hierarchical string diagrams.

Higher-Dimensional Timed and Hybrid Automata

Authors: Uli Fahrenberg

Published in: LITES, Volume 8, Issue 2 (2022): Special Issue on Distributed Hybrid Systems. Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 8, Issue 2

Abstract
We introduce a new formalism of higher-dimensional timed automata, based on Pratt and van Glabbeek’s higher-dimensional automata and Alur and Dill’s timed automata. We prove that their reachability is PSPACE-complete and can be decided using zone-based algorithms. We also extend the setting to higher-dimensional hybrid automata. The interest of our formalism is in modeling systems which exhibit both real-time behavior and concurrency. Other existing formalisms for real-time modeling identify concurrency and interleaving, which, as we shall argue, is problematic.

Rewriting for Monoidal Closed Categories

Authors: Mario Alvarez-Picallo, Dan Ghica, David Sprunger, and Fabio Zanasi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 228, 7th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2022)

Abstract
This paper develops a formal string diagram language for monoidal closed categories. Previous work has shown that string diagrams for freely generated symmetric monoidal categories can be viewed as hypergraphs with interfaces, and the axioms of these categories can be realized by rewriting systems. This work proposes hierarchical hypergraphs as a suitable formalization of string diagrams for monoidal closed categories. We then show double pushout rewriting captures the axioms of these closed categories.

Precongruences and Parametrized Coinduction for Logics for Behavioral Equivalence

Authors: David Sprunger and Lawrence S. Moss

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 72, 7th Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO 2017)

Abstract
We present a new proof system for equality of terms which present elements of the final coalgebra of a finitary set functor. This is most important when the functor is finitary, and we improve on logical systems which have already been proposed in several papers. Our contributions here are (1) a new logical rule which makes for proofs which are somewhat easier to find, and (2) a soundness/completeness theorem which works for all finitary functors, in particular removing a weak pullback preservation requirement that had been used previously. Our work is based on properties of precongruence relations and also on a new parametrized coinduction principle.
