The Lambda Calculus Is Quantifiable

Authors: Valentin Maestracci and Paolo Pistone

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
In this paper we introduce several quantitative methods for the lambda-calculus based on partial metrics, a well-studied variant of standard metric spaces that have been used to metrize non-Hausdorff topologies, like those arising from Scott domains. First, we study quantitative variants, based on program distances, of sensible equational theories for the λ-calculus, like those arising from Böhm trees and from the contextual preorder. Then, we introduce applicative distances capturing higher-order Scott topologies, including reflexive objects like the D_∞ model. Finally, we provide a quantitative insight on the well-known connection between the Böhm tree of a λ-term and its Taylor expansion, by showing that the latter can be presented as an isometric transformation.

A Quasiorder-Based Perspective on Residual Automata

Authors: Pierre Ganty, Elena Gutiérrez, and Pedro Valero

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 170, 45th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2020)

Abstract
In this work, we define a framework of automata constructions based on quasiorders over words to provide new insights on the class of residual automata. We present a new residualization operation and a generalized double-reversal method for building the canonical residual automaton for a given language. Finally, we use our framework to offer a quasiorder-based perspective on NL^*, an online learning algorithm for residual automata. We conclude that quasiorders are fundamental to residual automata as congruences are to deterministic automata.

Abstract
In this work we use a framework of finite-state automata constructions based on equivalences over words to provide new insights on the relation between well-known methods for computing the minimal deterministic automaton of a language.

A Survey on Static Cache Analysis for Real-Time Systems

Authors: Mingsong Lv, Nan Guan, Jan Reineke, Reinhard Wilhelm, and Wang Yi

Published in: LITES, Volume 3, Issue 1 (2016). Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 3, Issue 1

Abstract
Real-time systems are reactive computer systems that must produce their reaction to a stimulus within given time bounds. A vital verification requirement is to estimate the Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) of programs. These estimates are then used to predict the timing behavior of the overall system. The execution time of a program heavily depends on the underlying hardware, among which cache has the biggest influence. Analyzing cache behavior is very challenging due to the versatile cache features and complex execution environment. This article provides a survey on static cache analysis for real-time systems. We first present the challenges and static analysis techniques for independent programs with respect to different cache features. Then, the discussion is extended to cache analysis in complex execution environment, followed by a survey of existing tools based on static techniques for cache analysis. An outlook for future research is provided at last.
